The build up to this fight was intense and the fight was even better. Nobody gave Holyfield a chance at the time. Everyone thought Holyfield was washed up and Tyson seemed invincible again. Some thought Holyfield had a chance though. This was the HW fight of the 90’s. Two of the best matching up. Who would have thought Tyson would give his intro speech at the Hall of Fame. Comes out Tyson was Holyfield’s guy. Great fight.

Turns out Tyson was more past his best than Holyfield. Tyson was slower, coming in straight lines. Easier to hit, hasn’t taken a solid punch in 5 plus years since Ruddock 2. Had a combined 7 rounds of boxing in 5 plus years before the fight. Imo looked rusty in his comeback fights.

I’m from atmore ala so I’m a Holyfield fan. I watched this as a young man. And it’s funny how nowadays you tak to most casual fans or people that do t know and they say “he wasn’t the same Tyson after prison, he’d have killed Holyfield earlier”. But this just reminds me that at the time no one thought that. They didn’t give Holyfield even a punchers chance right up to the bell. I’d forgotten about that
@mikem5912 жыл бұрын
Totally true. Tyson was viewed as invincible again and people where concerned for Holyfield’s health. Tyson coming out of prison was in top shape and hungry again. He had already won two HW titles back, though he relinquished one of them. Holyfield was viewed as washed and few gave Holyfield any chance at all. People don’t realize what a huge upset this was at the time.
@poejineapples87172 жыл бұрын
True no1 gave holy a chance but still think it'v been better fight pre prison tyson. title fights after 3 warm ups is stupid, even foreman had loads pre title fights. Also, Ruddock dropped bombs on tyson but not a scratch so not sure holy wouldve dropped him back then...but tyson couldnt connect with holy cus of holys ringsmarts and that might still have been the case even pre prison.

Many, many people are think that Spinks beat Tyson! But after 91 sec, everybody saying that Spinks was "washed up"
@ZBOXINGTALK Жыл бұрын
Tbf people were saying the same shit when Tyson KO’d Spinks. Spinks was an undefeated 2 weight champion, coming off an exciting KO win. When Tyson KO’d him in the 1st round, he was then looked at as nothing special! Holyfield beat a good version of Tyson no matter what anyone say, definitely not the best (86-88) , but still very solid.

Holyfield would have TkO’d Tyson in 91’. Holyfield would have been viewed as somewhat the underdog. However Holyfield was in top form and Tyson was viewed as in decline, though he had shown some of his old form in his comeback. A Holyfield victory would have been somewhat surprising for a lot of people, but not viewed as a huge upset. People where actually pulling for Tyson to regain the title, but wouldn’t have been that surprised if Holyfield-Tyson was another version of Tyson-Douglas - just not as huge an upset.

Rare for a Tyson fan not to make excuses and just call it straight! Holyfield just had the combination of too much heart, dog and skill for Tyson. Tyson just had no effect on him psychologically whatsoever. Compare to that to the likes of Bruno, Spinks and Seldon who were half beaten when they were walking to the ring.

There are a lot of good comments here about: 1) Mike Tyson being out of shape and/or past his prime for this first Holyfield fight. 2) Tyson being a huge favorite 3) What would have happened if they fought in 1990 or 1991? A number of people claimed Tyson was ducking Holyfield when they SHOULD have fought in 1990/1991 before Tyson went to jail. It's possible that Tyson's camp knew he couldn't beat Holyfield and since Tyson was a huge draw and had the invincible 'Baddest Man on the Planet' mystique, he could get away with fighting any tomato can and it would be a huge draw. By the early to mid 1990's, the top fighters could duck the best competition and still earn huge paydays, so fighting Holyfield wasn't necessary for Tyson to command top dollar for fights. Tyson had to fight Holyfied in 1996 since he'd been in prison and was 30+, he couldn't just keep knocking out jobbers and suckering the public into paying huge dollars to watch it (like he did in the few years before going to prison), there was just too much money to turn down Holyfield, even if he knew he couldn't beat him deep down. In hindsight, we can all see that Tyson was no longer the "Baddest Man on the Planet" after Buster Douglas knocked him out in February 1990 (it may have actually been a few fights before that) but Tyson was so ferocious and dominant for the first 2 or 3 years of his career, ALL OF US thought he was still invincible even after spending a few years in prison. I mean, people still thought he was invincible when Lennox Lewis beat him around 2002!!

Mike Tyson - Evander Holyfield Timeline 1. The first time they were scheduled to fight was in June of 1990, but the bout was scrapped after Tyson loses to Douglas in Tokyo on February 11, 1990. 2. The second time they were scheduled to fight was on November 8, 1991, but the bout was postponed due to Tyson suffering a cartilage injury to his left rib cage during training on October 8, 1991. 3. On the third time around, both camps were in discussion for a possible fight date sometime after January of 1992, but those discussions goes up in flames after Tyson gets himself convicted of rape on February 10, 1992.
