Smokin Joe was the most courageous fighter I've ever seen, and a great fighter. However he stood no chance against Foreman who was too big and strong. His short stature and swarming style meant he had to come through Foreman's blows to get inside, and Foreman could just push him into range and batter him. Mismatch of styles, but both great fighters.

No, it wasn't his short stature or swarming style (Forman may have never lost a fight if he was a swarmer but he wasn't he was a slugger) that cost Frazier the fight vs Forman it was his style made him susceptible to the best uppercutters by always bending over straight forward at the waste right into Formans punch. and that's what cost Frazier the fight. Forman had the power to exploit that weakness where Ali didn't that's why Ali caught hell vs Frazier while Forman beat him rather easily.

@GonzGunner
@GonzGunner 3 жыл бұрын
Speaking from a standpoint of tactics, the main thing that started Joe's decline was that he never changed his fighting style to adapt to a new generation of fighters. What had worked for him to defeat Ali in their first fight ( relentlessly pressing the attack, constant bobbing and weaving, and ducking, and hard left hook coming out of nowhere ) was starting to be easily read. Ali put this to good use in their second and third fights, he learned his lessons and dealt with Joe accordingly. Foreman already had plenty of time to study that, and combined it with his own pressing attack and brute punching power to knock out Joe in this fight.

as he had diamond chin, was wery strong and bulky, while he had incredible strong arms, he used different defensive tactic. He tried to deflect blows with punches, at their begining of movement. The technique, that requires lots of timing, precision and skill. Foreman had those, and he could risk ocasional hit, as he had diamond chin. His defensive tactic didn't required so much movement around, and it helped him keep energy.

Here he is, coming to fight and and trying to win, not just turning u for the payday. He was a proud man. He knew no other way! Regardless of opinion, Frazier had great defensive skill, as well as the lethal left hook. Foreman (also a great champion) mostly nullified Joes attack, by constantly doing the two armed push back, keeping him at a distance........which is also not allowed but anyway...........! George was immensely strong and used this defense against many fighters and got away with it. Joe came up short here, but I don’t know of another fighter with more determination or a bigger heart! Foreman was there for the taking, swinging slow punches from waist height. Shame that Joe wasn't his normal best, he seamed to throw 30 left hooks to 1 right hook. George knew this and felt relatively safe dodging the left. That meant he could slug away and keep Joe busy . No wonder Ali could see the solution to beating George , Ali was far to busy and unpredictable with his arsenal that Foreman couldn't do what he normally does. However , we will always be grateful for fighters like Frazier and Foreman, they were greats, and always showed up to fight !!!! Great video.
