Consider the two things... the time period this came out... which I think was the 90s. And when Dahl wrote and published it. I think a kid walking out on their own was rather normal then or at the very least others may've assumed her parents were nearby.

@oooh19 I don't really think it's that more people suck as much as people don't "mind their own business" for good and for bad. Crime and abuse still happened. It just wasn't talked about as much unless it was HUGE news in big cities. Like Sylvia Likens's case. A lot of times abuse cases or stuff like that was seen as you being disrespectful or trying to be rude to family.

Emotional Neglect, everyone responds to it differently sometimes people idealize new relationships in hopes of receiving the love they never received from their parents. Others become closed off scared to let people in. Childhood trauma runs deep.

When she won at Bingo she took them to a fancy dinner. She never insults or physically harms her either. There's just something so comforting about this, maybe it's the simplistic 90s feel, or the calming music whilst making a classic breakfast meal, or maybe just Matilda doing it in the most convincing adult way, yet I still feel the need to pinch her cheeks because of how adorably responsible she is.

0:24 Can you define "Take care of herself" because she knows how to clean herself up, she knows how to cook for herself, and goes on her adventure. I'm pretty sure all of us can do that do before we turn 30. It's not like she is paying for the house and for her food.
