my biggest issue with the series is how they expect us to believe a bunch of very durable aliens who navigate exclusively by echolocation could take on the militaries of the world. resistant to small arms fire sure, but a 1000lb laser(or TV)-guided bomb? a 120mm round from a tank? a MOAB? or even just AT-4's and large-caliber auto cannons like a Bradley's 25mm chain gun.

One thing nobody is talking about that I appreciate is how animalistic they're portrayed. When the cop fires the first time, the alien recognizes that something is challenging him and poses up while showing it's teeth. Since it's blind, it doesn't know what exactly is challenging it so it has no idea what it is capable of and since it's challenging it, it's most likely another predator. So it pauses and waits and only moves in after the second shotgun blast seemed to confirm to it that it's challenger was only capable of shooting very hard pellets at it.

I really like how John Krasinski's character doesn't hesitate for a second when that first alien plows over the police car out of nowhere, he just turns around and hightails it out of there. An additional reason why everybody saying the military would win isn't really looking at the bigger picture. Humanity is prepared for a certain set of circumstances. Humans are really good at handling attacks from other humans. These things behave and fight in a way that's not what we're used to. A man-sized (enough) target that can run tens of miles an hour, jump up walls and ignore anything other than armor-piercing rounds and bombs is just not something the cops are at all prepared to fight. And the fact that it disproportionately targets first responders like you said makes it the perfect chaos machine. Perfectly suited to killing whoever's in charge and the most likely people to be able to coordinate and defeat it.

The sequence where the camera is in the car really reminds me of the scene in blowout which was kind of the same. It was a crazy iconic scene back in the day and i feel this film drew some inspiration from an old classic!

2 things. 1. I love the zero hesitation by both of these parent to get the fuck out of there. They both know like nothing about what’s going on but the instant something happens they are straight up hauling ass out of there. 2. I feel like these aliens would go into sensory overload with all the noises of the world? I know that’s actually how they kind of beat them since they use the radio distortion sound to kill them.

On 1, I do respect it but I also recognize that while I may not thriller-style blankly study an imminent threat for like 30 seconds before bolting way too late, I imagine that in a similar situation, I'd freeze up for at least 2 seconds before deciding that I need to flee, and it'd probably get me killed. Yes, I don't expect to survive an apocalyptic scenario, and I'll own up to that. On 2, maybe, maybe not. Hearing is a matter of being able to pick up vibrations of a set frequency range with an unspecified biological tolerance. If the alien has a similar or broader hearing range, higher sensitivity, and lower tolerance, then yes, there'd be sensory overload. On the other hand, if they have a more limited range (don't pick up certain sounds) or a significantly higher tolerance (...elephants?), all the noise in the world wouldn't do much. It's hard to say since it's not explained from the aliens' side if the loud noises are as painful as a jet engine into your eardrum or just irritating like...a phone ringing.

@@tbnone2501 If it dies from a shotgun shell but survives atmospheric entry/planetary explosions then it's just bad writing. Its armor would literally have to defy EVERYTHING we know about physics, with the ability to completely nullify heat and pressure. There is absolutely nothing that is even remotely close to doing that. Also as someone else pointed out, the creatures have no problem navigating their environment so theoretically they should be able to "see" people with whatever senses they're using even if they are being completely quiet.

Part 2 threw away everything that made the first great with characters talking non-stop and constantly making dumb decisions unlike in the first where they could only talk by the waterfall and they put sand down as they walked. All really fascinating ways that convey how this family managed to survive all this time, annnnnd then in the second one the kid locks himself in a furnace….

I hate how many films just have "Well the world ended because of this one thing that our random normal family will solve" Like I get that them being invulnerable is a plot point, but that thing is clearly made of fleshy bits and is only somewhat larger than a person. Even if the buckshot isn't effective, _physics_ should still apply. Knock it around some. Make them tough as hell, sure. But just "nuh-uh it is invincible" just takes me out of it. And as we see later in the film, it clearly CAN be killed, and is highly vulnerable to high pitched sound. Telling me the entire world just rolled over and died without anyone noticing its weak points till now? AHHHH.

World ended, sorry the military and best scientists in the world, couldn't do anything, but the (fill in normal person here) saves the day. In the 50s and 60s, the sci-fi heroes were scientists and military types. It made sense, now it's a no no.

I worked with a human neurosurgeon in Africa and i am a wildlife vet and ethologist myself, and he explained to me (and after some research observing animals, i 100% agree with him), that this is our anxiety in times of fear like when we are being attacked, which actually keeps us aliv e. The worst thing you can do when you are being attacked is calm down. You must calm down when the attack is over or the problem is over. Like for example if you are running away from a doh chasin g you, your anxiety and the cortisol and adrenaline release is what will make you run faster. If you are attacked by someone, it is your anger to fight back that will fuel your body to tear your assailant apart if needs be. If you calm down when you are in danger, you are toast. Never listen to anyone telling you to calm down when you're in danger. When our kids are in danger we should tell them to run or to fight and reassure them that everythin g is going to be ok, but never tell them to calm down. Only calm down when the situation is not dangerous, just stressful. Like again for example, never get anxious because of some work problem or family issues, or problems in your private life, that solves nothing. The stress and anxiety that we feel is due to the fact that our brain is not wired for the 20th and 21st centuries. Our brain is still very much governed by emotions and this is a good thing or we'd all be psychopaths. The bad thing is that we live in a society that does not alloow us to be governed by emotions. So we are forced to go against our nature, and this causes stress and anxiety. Animals in the wild, do not have that problem, if a lion bothers another lion then they fight and let all the cortisol and adrenaline out and they go back to being calm again. When your boss or people on the street or your spouse or the traffic warden who stopped you because of your ethnicity (and you know it) get on your nerve, unlike the lion, you don't bite their head off. But your brain doesn't know that you are not going to bite their head off, so it fills with cortisol and adrenaline and you get in a high anxiety or anger mode and then you can not do anything about it (that's why people break plates or yell or throw a stone against a wall, to release all that, this is actually very healthy) . The ones who are not healthy are the ones who go for a walk to clear it off, it is not going to clear it off, it is only going to poison you LITERALLY, it will poison your brain and your body chemical's balance and will make you psychotic or give you an ulcer or a heart attack or worse. What is even worse is to take it on the ones you can't be punished for hurting, and it is usually animals because they don't call the cops so a lot of people take their anger on their pets or their enemies' pets, which personally makes me want to microwave those people. Unfortunately we liv e inn a society where you are even punished for yelling or breaking plates or throwing a rock against a wall. So basically societies that make us sick, because they do not allow us to be us. My two cents of advice to anyone reading this, don't calm down when you are in danger unless the danger is not real, try not to stress over little things by training your brain to be unresponsive to petty attacks from idiotic people. And if you can't help but get really angry, yell and break things (that belong to you) that you do not really care about. Trust me, a plate or a good scream, is not worth an ulcer. I am lucky to be happily married and live in the least dangerous place on earth so i haven't felt angry or stressed or anxious or in danger of any sort, for a very long time. But i remember that when i lived in Europe where i am from originally i was used to keep all the anxiety and anger and stress in, because this is how i was raised, and then i started working in africa and eastern europe and some parts of asia and so people getting really mad when they were angry and yelling and shouting and breaking stuff, and at first it scared me a bit, but then i realize how healthy those people were and how they barely felt stress. I saw women fight over gossips and throwing apples or rock at each other and though that was hilarious but in the same time, they let it all out and it was over. I saw men get into real fight over some dispute and throw punches and then they would defuel and go back to their lives. It never escalated. But then i watched the news in the west and saw the number of people who one day lose it and flip the switch and go from doormats to shooting their entire school or neighbourhoods or families, after years of taking it on defenceless animals . And i can't help but thinking. If they could yell more, and break plates an d throw punches and society allowed them to get really mad in a healthy way (anger is healthy make no mistake about that), then it would never come to that. In the west we live in a pressure cooker and no pressure cooker can handle the pressure for ever, they all have their breaking point. So don't calm down and don't tell people to calm down in a situation of danger, and if you are being attacked NEVER EVER tell your assailant to calm down. It is because he or she was forced to be too calm for too long that this lead to the attack (most of the time, because happy people don't attack others) tnat they flipped, so the worst thing you can tell them is to calm down. Ask then why they are so angry, allow them to at least talk about their anger, this is the best and easiest way to make them defuel. I was held at gunpoint by someone and because i let him talk out his anger, he stopped being a threat, once he could let it out, he felt no longer aggressive. That's why shrinks always make you talk, to help you let it all out. My mother is a shrink, she has worked with people from politicians to in mates to huge corporation employees under gigantic stress, to war veterans etc, and she has had the biggest and most dangerous men, turn into a puddle of tears once they could let it all out, they completely broke apart in the best way and felt immensely relieved after they could let it out. Don't calm down unless you are fine.
