randy jonhson it's not the same being a good amateur as being olympic champion. The examples you gives were just "good amateurs". Savon was three times Olympic Champion. Teofilo Stevenson was also three times Olympic Champion and even better than Savon, he knocked out Tyrell Biggs and other good american amateur champions who later became pro. By that time there were also very good boxers from former USSR and eastern europe countries who did not jump to pro. Stevenson got his first olympic gold in Munich'72 when he was 20, the second in Montreal'76(24 years old)and his third Moscow'80 at 28. He didn't got 5 olympic gold medals deu to political boicots to LA'84 and Seoul'88 but he continued being the best amateur heavyweight of the world until he retired in 1989. It was normal to stay as amateur with more than 30 but he was the best since was 20, fighting against older boxers. Try to see him here in youtube and give your opinion.

Cuban amateur boxers had a way of making time for themselves to put together shots and exploit whatever openings they could find or make. They were basically superior to any other nation in timing, and efficiency whilst doing that. They knew really well how to score and evade in the limited time and rounds at amateur level. That “uncoordinated” way they moved and scored seems that way because non-Cubans were were perhaps not as disciplined in training and didn’t develop to be as adept as the Cubans in terms of style, tactics and overall strategy under amateur rules.
