This song paints the picture of an ironically peaceful reveal of a martyr in the middle of a massacre, who is giving up on humanity. I imagine the stressed hero with that look that says "what was it worth?" The person he was saving, was someone who was scared to stop a war. So he burnt the bridge that created the bloodshed. "If you can't create peace as one then be as you already were." And with the connection in flames, he has saved millions, but for the sacrifice of becoming someone. At least, that's what comes to my mind.
