I'm not sure if you guys read these, but just in case, I'm 71 years old, I was about 13 or 14 when Paul Simon wrote this song and it's always been a favorite. When I heard Ya'll "Disturbed" do this cover, I actually had goose bumps from head to toe. by the time it got to the end ,I had tears in my eyes. You "Disturbed" have brought a great deal of justice to this great hit, and will carry it's legacy for many, many years. Out of the millions of views of this video, I'm sure at least 1000 are mine. The words to the song, mean as much or more now than when written, so many years ago. Even though I'm not a Metal fan, I will always cherish your version. To say this old man is obsessed with this cover, would be a gross understatement, Carry on, and God Bless ya, and THANK YOU, from a Fan, In Tennessee.

I know the feeling, the pain never fades, but in time you'll become numb and it becomes easier but the man who raised me has been gone for 7 years now and i still cry every time i see his photo in my wallet or talk about him even this post actually took a good 15 min to fight nack tears but i wont let his name be forgotten in my lifetime it was Billy Carl Tresner So i hope you are handling your loss better then i did but i remember the ancient Egyptians believed that we all die twice. Ohl Matthew what an experience you so many soldiers all over the world had to go through. Hope and pray these effects are less than lessened over the years for you and everyone else who lived through war like my moms family moved back to Greece in twenties and stayed throughout world War II in the 40s. She went to three wars the ones the Italians. The Germans and then the Civil War made by the communist up till 1949 when they were brought back to America because they were natural born citizens by the state department.. Mon still had those nightmares up till the 60s. Now she's gone and those nightmares are gone too. And my dad was drafted when he was 35 years old and had a heart attack during the blitzgred in London that partly disabled him. I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you

Hello, darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping, Left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never share. And no one dare Disturb the sound of silence. "Fools," said I, "You do not know: Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you," But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming. And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence."

And the sign said "The prophets have written on the subway walls and tenement halls". Reminds me of when Bob Dylan went to the Vatican. The ushers kept him from approaching Pope John Paul II (now St John Paul II). The Pope put his arm out to block the usher and reached out for Dylan saying "Let the prophet come". He knew from the words and soul of Dylan that he was a prophet. True story. I think this version of Songs of Silence is really speaking to peoples souls. It does mine.

I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.

Trent Reznor from NIN said the same thing to Johnny Cash about the song "Hurt." At first Reznor was a little put out because of how personal the song was to him but after he heard Cash sing it and saw his video for it he told him this is no longer my song it's yours.

June, 2024 as the world burns, literally and figuratively. I was 15 when the original came out and have loved it all my life and so was very surprised, at the age of 76, how much I liked this version. I was fully expecting to hate it until I got the message from him. Here's why :::;;; politically, I've seen practically nothing change politically in my lifetime for 60 years. Paul Simon gently, politely asked people to pay attention to what's going on around you. But no one has listened for 60 years and so Disturbed comes along:: and they're not softly ASKING you to pay attention, they're fucking ORDERING you to listen, to pay attention, they are tired of people still not listening to what's going on around them 60 years later. He's pissed, it shows, and I agree. He's telling you/ us to pay attention to what's going on••••••right fucking now.❗❗

Forgetting Iron Maiden? Honestly though David is a fantastic baritone singer that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his voice, early on he made some comments that rubbed people the wrong way and until relatively recently a significant amount of the metalhead community wrongfully wrote him off as a cheesy prick. Fantastic singer and especially these days a really cool guy who isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, mad respect for David.

Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.

Liz Xu. I couldn't agree more. Paul Simon rolling into New York at the youbg age of what. 21. When he witnessed and took in, and then wrote of his experiences. Yes more anger and frustration in the state of humanity decades later, sad in itself. When I first heard of this remake I didn't think I would care for it. Maybe two days had passed and this video showed up in my feed, God did I cry and I still get a big lump in my throat when I hear it. This is so beautifully done, I love his voice, you can just FEEL the emotion. It has forever changed the song for me but in a good way, I love this version. To me, this song is about a lack of empathy and in our silence we can't share empathy or don't. This sound is more true today than it was in 1966. Neon God is the media on TV, radio, social media and their negative opinions on truth music. If we can't listen, nor communicate with each other without some form of empathy to hear it. We hear music but do we really listen to the lyrics as much as we should?

He was also a big, big Opera fan and particularly enjoyed Pavarotti. He would have loved, loved hearing this cover and I can see him now, eyes closed, conducting the music, with a joyous expression on his face while he experienced the music with all his senses. Makes me want to smile and cry at the same time.

I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

I've always thought the original version was so perfect that I never liked any cover, even live versions didn't hit the same way, but this... holy shit. It brings all the power and sadness of the original, but then takes it home, it's as if S&G's was a pleading for people to listen to the warning, and this starts off with the sad recognition that nobody did listen and then explodes into a desperate anger that nobody ever will, and all the hope from the original is now lost, replaced by... silence. And the visual... the musicians and the writers so close yet so far, the completely dead and abandoned world, once again just reinforces how there is no hope, nobody takes the warning, and all these years later it's all the same, it's all worse. I have goosebumps all over and tears in my eyes, I don't remember the last time a song moved me this much.

""Fools" said I, "You do not know, Silence like a cancer grows, Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you", But my words, like silent raindrops fell, And echoed in the wells of silence, And the people bowed and prayed, To the neon ORANGE god they made, And the sign flashed out its warning, In the words that it was forming, Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls, In tenement halls" And whispered in the sound of silence
