I'm not sure if you guys read these, but just in case, I'm 71 years old, I was about 13 or 14 when Paul Simon wrote this song and it's always been a favorite. When I heard Ya'll "Disturbed" do this cover, I actually had goose bumps from head to toe. by the time it got to the end ,I had tears in my eyes. You "Disturbed" have brought a great deal of justice to this great hit, and will carry it's legacy for many, many years. Out of the millions of views of this video, I'm sure at least 1000 are mine. The words to the song, mean as much or more now than when written, so many years ago. Even though I'm not a Metal fan, I will always cherish your version. To say this old man is obsessed with this cover, would be a gross understatement, Carry on, and God Bless ya, and THANK YOU, from a Fan, In Tennessee.

Hope and pray these effects are less than lessened over the years for you and everyone else who lived through war like my moms family moved back to Greece in twenties and stayed throughout world War II in the 40s. She went to three wars the ones the Italians. The Germans and then the Civil War made by the communist up till 1949 when they were brought back to America because they were natural born citizens by the state department.. Mon still had those nightmares up till the 60s. Now she's gone and those nightmares are gone too. And my dad was drafted when he was 35 years old and had a heart attack during the blitzgred in London that partly disabled him. I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you

I'm not going to do it tonight, because I've had a long day and, truthfully, it's a bit exhausting to listen to and watch. But, damn, when I need an emotional cleanse...David Draiman, on that night, sick as a dog with a high fever, (as the legend goes) threw a performance that belongs upon Mount Olympus...but it was given to us mere mortals!

***** some real old songs are starting to come back into circulation but as i said this generation think they know music when they don't like what they think is "ROCK" isn't actually ROCK theres a YT channel called the combat veteran he does a video skit exactly like it where his friend gets into his car and puts on "ROCK" look it up.
@Bragison88 жыл бұрын
I agree this generation lacks an appreciation of good music, but genres evolve over time; there are many sub-genres of rock that you may not like but that doesn't mean they're not rock. They might not be a classic rock and roll band, but they still fall under the category of rock because they belong to a sub-genre of it. Unless of course you're talking about genres that are completely separate from rock, in which case I'd agree.

I haven't listened to metal much for a long time but my brother passed this along to me and it blows me away. I think I've replayed it at least a dozen times in the last two days. I always loved the original Simon & Garfunkel version and I never thought anyone could do it better, but man oh man. I get misty-eyed every time I hear it. And judging from the comments I'm not the only one. Words cannot begin to describe how awesome this rendition is, and I am now a Disturbed fan.

+Scott Bieser I love reading the responses from those who grew up with the S&G version or those who loved the original and are impressed with the cover as well. I had heard the original a few times but never really "listened" to the lyrics. This one made me listen, the vocals so powerful with the lyrics. I feel like it reinvents the song for the current time. I can imagine that's how people felt hearing the original the first time. That it fit that time. I have listened to this over and over and so many times. Gives me chills!

+Janice B I think that's a good point. This is a powerful song in any time when it's performed according to the musical tastes of the time. I’ll be honest. When I first heard that Disturbed made a cover of this song, I was highly sceptical. I love Disturbed, but hearing that they were doing a song by Simon and Garfunkel left me thinking that they were going to end up butchering the original. But then I went in and listened to this song and, let me just say, I was blown away. I’ve now heard this song more times than I can count and everytime I hear it, it’s just as amazing as when I first heard it. I will always love Disturbed, regardless of what other people say.

I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.

And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never share. And no one dare Disturb the sound of silence. "Fools," said I, "You do not know: Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you," But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming. And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence."

To David, with much love. As a Christain, I can certainly identify with your message. I'm a grandma that lived through the 60s (and the aftermath). I first came in contact with Disturbed listening to your verion of "Sound of Silence." What a MASTERPIECE! Unreal. What really hit me was your ability to connect emotionally, your true compassion for the lost of humanity. What a wonderful human being, aside from being insanely talented. I hope you keep doing exactly what you've been doing. Exactly as you are. Because I know this really radical, amazing man who once did the exact same thing in a time and culture when it was unthinkable. Who reached out to the dregs of society, the outcasts who were considered cursed and punished by God, and despised by society. And to everyone's amazement, he treated each and every one of these with such tenderness, love and compassion it totally confused and amazed even his followers. You also reach out to the lost, the forgotten. Those which much of society looks down upon, the drug addicts, alcoholics and those suffering in the darkness of depression. And you let them know that they are loved and are not alone. Thank God for people like you, David Draiman. No matter what your beliefs (or not) you are the epitome of love and compassion for each other, and no one gets left behind! And it's a beautiful thing! Don't ever stop! Thank you so much for this masterpiece!

@stoirmzКүн бұрын
@@graysonoliver2632 Not sure if that is exactly what I meant. I don't think people are ready for this message anymore. Or even understand it. So I changed my post to reflect how I feel - not only how I've always known the song, but to reflect David's beautiful connection and compassion. It's a nicer message than the true, dark one of the song. I can still imagine Yeshua walking the cobblestone streets of Jerusalem, often so alone. Trying to teach, and to reach the people to His great angst and frustration. "Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks. But you would not." And Jesus wept. Jesus wept bitterly because He knew what the coming consequences would be (in 70 AD) for the people's rejection of God. And they were utterly devastating. Instead, the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made. To the Golden Calf. The people had lost their way. Anyone who knows the warnings of the prophets knows that they are dire. The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls. Literally. This is so NYC. But what were the Biblical supernatural words WRITTEN ON THE WALL? These words told the king that he had been JUDGED, and found wanting. His kingdom was taken from him. And by the next morning, the king was dead and Babylon had fallen. It was inevitable. New York City is a common analogy to a modern-day Babylon. David's version, whether he meant to or not, captures that angst Yeshua felt trying so desperately to reach humanity - and the deep, unbearable sorrow when no one hears you. This version is truly a timeless masterpiece. I can only hope that more people come to fully understand it, and heed the warning before it's way too late. Shalom Shalom!

Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
@citizendick68956 жыл бұрын
Liz Xu actually the fact that it will still be relevant decades later is what makes it so haunting.

Liz Xu. I couldn't agree more. Paul Simon rolling into New York at the youbg age of what. 21. When he witnessed and took in, and then wrote of his experiences. Yes more anger and frustration in the state of humanity decades later, sad in itself. When I first heard of this remake I didn't think I would care for it. I was wrong and can't quite listening to it again. Perfect tribute to a genius's work of art.

Metal is defined by who ever listens to it. Metallica is seen as metal by most but is seen as rock by "post core black metal alternative" types. Honestly I see it as if its heavier than Ozzy then it's metal.

Forgetting Iron Maiden? Honestly though David is a fantastic baritone singer that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his voice, early on he made some comments that rubbed people the wrong way and until relatively recently a significant amount of the metalhead community wrongfully wrote him off as a cheesy prick. Fantastic singer and especially these days a really cool guy who isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, mad respect for David.
