“Boy Kills World” movie has deaf character, but cast by hearing person

A new movie is released in theaters called “Boy Kills World” and the main character is deaf, but the actor is hearing- acting like a deaf person. What do you think? Should a deaf person have been cast for this role? Watch the video and leave a comment!

The big question is why did they pick deafness as a “plug-n-play” part of the story if they had zero interest in including actual Deaf people? Would the story work anyway with a hearing character and whatever creativity they used with the cinematography? I ask those questions because we keep saying the same thing over and over again “hire Deaf actors, etc.” and hearing people keep ignoring it. We need to drive home the point that we Deaf people are real human beings not a plot gimmick. Reframe the discussion.

Joseph Santarose and Rusty Nawrocki are tae kwon do (martial artist) instructors who are also deaf. One of them can be involved in this film easily. The problem is that the director did not try to reach out to the Deaf Community and ask if there is someone who is Deaf and a martial artist (karate, tae kwon do, or similar). This is definitely a blow to the Deaf community and Hearing community.

I am a hearing ASL student preparing to enter an interpreter training program. I believe that they could have easily found a Deaf person who already knows martial arts if they would have only made the attempt to search.

Why don’t u ask the filmmakers why they chose an hearing person to play the deaf character…See what their reason for this. Of course in our world should have deaf person to play any roles and it a good awareness for the public in general..

Renca, thank you! If you're going to have a deaf character, have a deaf actor. Absolutely! As another commenter said, Deaf Actor Now. 💯 (If necessary, modify the choreography or the skills required by the actor. Or give extra training or extra time to practice the choreography.) I've seen a trailer for an all Deaf Jesus movie. Will the Daily Moth cover it?

Hi. Yea I would prefer deaf adult in any roles in movies… I seen in real life, there some goth deaf people, or expert deaf dancers that could use for karate acting. And deaf nerdy people can be behind the lens to help better views,too… Deaf can do everything but no hear.. Now again producers picked Bill as “Boy” role in rated R movie, called “Boy kill World”….

Challenge is not really quite the right term. Drama is creative, drives passion into scripts, plots and stories. Deaf actors have their own ways of expressing and portray emotions. Just how hearing actors do likewise. Please don't assume that deaf actors have to compete against hearing actors for roles. Productions select appropriate talented actors regardless deaf or hearing. There are actually several productions who integrated both deaf and hearing actors together.

I do not know who the actor is. I don’t give a damn if it is an A-List actors! Plus, I do not like fights and blood in any movies. The movie crew worry too much about moola (money) so they can buy bags od lollie pops. No, I won’t see it. Good night!
