With the help of Chris Coddington, owner of Hot Rods By Boyd, we take a look back at an iconic GMC sport truck that helped set several trends in the OBS truck world. In the late 1980s, Boyd Coddington not only built high-end hot rods and customs but blended his style to sport trucks including a chopped GMC truck complete with custom touches and linear paint job.
Luckily, that truck, built-in 1989 is still in near flawless condition today and has made its way back into the Coddington clan's garage.

This was such a badass time to be alive! I was just a kid but constantly was picking up hotrod and streettruck magazines and dreaming of one day having a badass truck/car just like this. And this one is just so...damn.....CLEAN!! It's like you could have bought it like this straight from Chevy and nobody would have ever known!! Glad HRBB was able to get it back so they can preserve the history!!

This truck and the orange extended cab Belltech short box are the reason, I built Oldblue! I spoke to Chris and Boyd to verify the Boyd’s Tomahawk wheels I purchased for Oldblue in 1999. Thanks Chris very cool to see your keeping the truck as is for display. I drove the wheels off Oldblue and sold it 12 years ago, I see it sitting near a barn every time I go near it in Southern Ontario, rust taking it’s toll.

Wow congratulations Chris , Boyd must really be proud of ya ! OBS trucks are part of my childhood/ teenager years , one of a kind design , GM designers at its best , after that GM trucks went downhill, they couldn’t make one decent truck ever since ! All the Boyd trucks are legendary part of 80’s/90’s culture I still remember them I still got the magazine with the splattered pink truck !

I remember seeing all the Boyd OBS trucks lined up at the dealership. It’s one of my favorite memories as a kid and a huge reason I still break my neck every time I see a lowered Chevy with billet wheels hoping to see one again. It was my dream and still kind of is, to have a Boyd style single cab towing a bad ass little sped boat.

Great to see the name and the business is still out there. The last time I saw the show Boyd was still there. Unfortunately so was that asshole Dwayne. What a big man he was! It was as toxic an environment as I’ve seen, on so many levels. The fact that it was televised seemingly without any shame astounded me.

I remember seeing this truck in magazines when I was a kid. I wanted to build and paint custom cars for a living. But just a kid with no money. So I used take pictures of stock vehicals. Make a light transfere of it and rub that onto paper. Then draw over that what I thought would look better. In pencil and ink it in the same process comic book artists do. Ask a teacher to Xerox 10-15 copies and then I could play with colors and graphics multiple times. I remember I liked the body work on this particular truck so it was one of the few I basically just traced outright. Only leaving the wheel well areas blank. To try different wheels designs on it. Only thing I didn't like was the stripping on that truck. I don't understand why they ignored smooth curvature of the fender front to back and just threw down lines that suits the older Square body trucks. But that's just my opinion and not one to say it's wrong and what I like matters for anything other than my own. What's right is whatever you like and enjoy. Welder/Machinist by trade. Must learn Family backup trade. Just suits me. I was making good money but burnt out on collision repair. But I built a Hella nice paint booth out back of the main shop. It's not my main business. Frankly lose money sometimes. But still...I like the Automobile and Motorcycle enthusiasts communities. Zero intrest in banging out dents of newer stock vehicals or vinyl stripes or wraps. It's a hobby and don't have to do any of it. But sometimes work for minimum wage to help a friend out that's willing to learn how to do stuff for themselves and work hard at it. I have a complete cabinet and furniture capable shop as well and as my mother was a very good seamstress and laying out upholstery isn't that much different have several JUKI sewing machines good for that. Leather....not so much. I want to learn more about it but only 24 hours in a day and equipment is expensive since it's less common and harder to find in rebuildable used discounted condition. And I wouldn't know how to bid on it if it did appear as an item for sale.🤷‍♂️ Hobby...just something fun to do when the bills are paid and family responsibility is reached. Then I can play with Hot Rods for fun.

I actually watched a guy in Seattle, who had a very successful commercial glass shop (Wakefield Glass), do this in '88-'89 on a truck he bought. It was gold with a tannish-brown, lowered 2" in front, 4" in back, really sharp. The interior & exterior "Look" aged really well as compared to this- which most "Trend setting" things (be it clothes, vehicles, interior designs, et cetera) do. They get stuck in an era, age terribly.

Boyd Coddington did not ever invent the smoothness or the monochromatic paint job that was popular during the '80s definitely he didn't invent it and many of those custom touches on that truck have already been done rolled pans tucked in bumpers chopped roofs and a mile long other things so now he might get a few points for having the truck but he didn't invent none of the style on it or the chromatic paint job
