warning... long comment ahead. - They created boygenius in 2018 after all being friends as solo artists. - Lucy and Julien each have 3 solo albums & Phoebe has 2 (plus a lot of other collaborations). - They won three Grammys this year (Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative Album) and Phoebe also won an extra one with SZA. About their songwriting process -- each song usually has one main writer (usually the person who has lead vocals), but they all finish the songs together. So on this EP, Lucy wrote "Bite the Hand" and "Salt in the Wound," Phoebe wrote "Me & My Dog" and "Ketchum, ID," and Julien wrote "Souvenir" and "Stay Down." About their lyrics: -- they all write a lot about mental health and overall sad things (evidently) -- there's also a lot of religious imagery (from Julien Baker specifically). -- "Bite the Hand" is about parasocial relationships between entitled fans and artists. -- from Me & My Dog, "I wanna be emaciated" could be a reference to the "we forgot to eat" line from the first verse + Phoebe Bridgers (who's the main writer on the track) also said that it was about her anorexia. -- Ketchum, ID is named after a town in Idaho, and the song is about being a touring artist and never being in any one place long enough to call it home. -- they don't write about romantic love as often as other artists do. Their debut album "the record" is mostly about their friendship and queerness. If you're interested in listening to more of them, definitely check out "the record." If you're looking for some of their solo music, I think each of their most recent albums are their most GP accessible albums: -- "Home Video" by Lucy, which is about her coming-of-age with lots of queer and Christian themes. -- "Little Oblivions" by Julien, which is emotionally heavy (about addiction, losing faith, mental illness) yet somehow still not her heaviest album -- "Punisher" by Phoebe, which is dark and pretty in an existential way(?) if that makes sense (it was released in the 2020 lockdown)

And to add to the original comment, for "the record" they put out four music videos. Three of them (Emily I'm Sorry, $20, and True Blue) were directed by Kristen Stewart, and together make a short film ("the film"). ---- Great video, by the way

the one whos voice you seemed to really like is lucy dacus! they actually booked a co-headlining tour in 2018 and they planned on recording a single to perform together on stage with but it ended up turning into this ep which they made in 4 days

I love Lucy’s voice😍 I discovered after reacting to this all their different voices individually. They are all so talented and sound incredible as a group😌🙏🏼

i recommend the following from their solo work: julien: sprained ankle, distant solar systems, brittle boned lucy: hot and heavy, pillar of truth, the shell phoebe: funeral, kyoto, would you rather these songs are truly masterpieces and can perhaps bring you insight on their writing styles and motifs etc. hope this helps !

You should listen to Twin Fantasy (2018) by Car Seat Headrest! It's a gay indie-rock masterpiece, I think you'd appreciate the storytelling

Please react to the record! Or something like a video of salt in the wound live (Julien shreds on the guitar every time it is amazing) or their music video directed by Kristen Stewart. I like the way you break down the lyrics when you're listening :) Also, the lyrics you were looking at were wrong in a few different places, probs because they never actually published lyrics videos/ didn't have the lyrics written down in a booklet for their physical copies when they dropped the EP. I think that in bite the hand, the lyrics are "your hands are grabbing while my hands are tied" not "your hands are gravity" and in Souvenier the lyrics are not "few hours in your dream last night." It is either "see, I was in your dream" or "say I was in your dream." It's hard to tell which one she is saying and every lyric site has it different lol
