Just the right amount of comedy, shining a light on nearly every single problem most teens eventually encounter, impeccable honesty when it comes to family and household problems, it taught you how you should treat your friends AND your enemies, how to deal with heartbreak, and most of all- it showed us all just how effective and important 1 caring teacher can be if you simply listen to what he/she is teaching. I find it so sad that they built up Eric’s character to be this funny guy who’s good with people, sensitive, bright (but still has to work hard to get passing grades), lazy and generally a relatable character. They talk so much about his potential and he gets to prove that he is able to work hard and get into college to create a life for himself. However, once he finally gets into college, it’s like they forgot all of that. While I do like Eric’s humorous side in the latter seasons, I find it a shame that it came at such a cost to his overall character. He had such potential to be a funny, relatable character just trying to get through college and prove his worth while still being the ‘clown’ and looking for ladies. I feel like the writers didn’t do him the justice his character deserved, they just turned him into the butt of the joke any time there was tension with the drama and romance stories. Sorry for the rant

I’m in my 30s and I’m very similar, I tend to act childish and say a lot of stuff that would make some seem stupid, but I do it to make some fun in my life and the lives of my friends and family. Throughout the series they showed certain things Eric excelled at. Weather, Art, working with kids, even teaching at one point, but then they just totally threw out the possible careers from those story lines for the sake of comedy. I think the beautiful thing about Eric's character development is that he was a sensitive guy, but because of that, had a tendency to fall into what people expected of him to help make them happy, but always fell short, because he was never meant to be what he thought the world wanted him to be. The episode with Jack was the epitome of this: Feeling like he was never good enough to "fit in" the world, even when he tried. It was only when people pointed out the unique goodness in him (like the monkey owner), did he really flourish as a genuine, good person, and only when he discovered to do things for himself did he accel. He shows what it's like to live as a genuine likeable guy, but is often weighed down by the expectations of others and will eventually crack. If there's someone in your like that is like Eric... show them some support and confirm the goodness of who they are as a person, and that will speak volumes to that kind of person... just like it did with Eric.

Eric was the best character on the show before they made him stupid. Those cheap laughs were never worth losing the younger version of Eric.

Did they make him stupid? I honestly cant remember if he was like that from the start

@@Robd07yes they made him seem like he was brain damaged in the last season.

Eric was the most capable of the Bmw group besides Topanga. He may not be the most educated but he certainly was the most capable, having multiple jobs, always trying to become better and when he finally gets into college he becomes probably the wisest of the cast because he understands what truly matters in life is the ones you love and i think that is why his character changes into a goofball because he finally gets it, that no matter what challenges come your way who you are to the people that love you is what defines you. Being there for the people that need you to be the person you are, just like his dad was there for him always believing he could do anything he wanted and when he finally gets it and tells his dad that he'll tell his kids what his dad taught him is when Eric realized he is exactly who he wants to be. a great big brother and a really great son and a cool person to be friends with. Eric becoming a senator who wants to change the world for the better makes a lot of sense, he's always been helping and guiding others ultimately defining who he is as a person, even when he thought he wasnt good enough, the people who loved him always seen who he truly is, a good boy trying to do good.

Éric was the most loyal guy in the entire show. Never did he not consider the children of the women he dated as not being a part of it. Also Tommy

Eric was the best character in the series. Growing up, I always thought my life would be Cory, as we all do, main character syndrome and all. But my life has actually paralleled Eric's eerily closely. Probably why I think the way I do about his character, but it's also bc it's real. Sometimes life doesn't go the way you expect, sometimes it never does. That's Eric Matthews.

Man, just watching this video makes you appreciate Eric even more and realize how severely they mismanaged his character in the later seasons. Also, being someone who grew up in the 90s, I really miss Boy Meets World.

The one about Kelly and Eric really got me , I’ve dated someone before my current gf who had 3 boys none of which where mine by blood but I’ll be damned if I didn’t grow to care about them immensely. The relationship didn’t work for her in the long term and what hurt the most is feeling like I had lost 4 parts of my heart not just 1. You always have to be super careful going into any relationship where that new partner has kids because if you lose it you’re loosing so sooo much more than a gf/bf you’re loosing a family.. I don’t regret it for a minute now tho , that was life experience that has now helped shape me into the man I want to be and into a better parental figure as my current gf of going on 2 years has a child too and we’re talking about a life long commitment which makes me the happiest I’ve ever felt and I finally feel like I’m getting what life prepared me for all those years ago but this time it’s forever ❤

When I watch it now my headcannon is that he’s like Michael Scott during the college years. He recognizes everyone else is going through something and his choice is to pretend to play stupid and maybe he can make them feel better.

The years before college, he would have made such a great father. And when he got into college, he was on the path to become possibly the greatest uncle ever. Edit; Compare his dream jobs, to what he ends up as. And how he got that position. 😂
