This is the game that I bought with my first Game Boy when I was a kid. I knew nothing about it aside from seeing the cover and I think I made a pretty good choice in hindsight. I accidentally left the GameBoy at my grandmother's once and I ended up getting a call from her later that night asking how she could defeat the boss of a level. She never played games before or since but even she could get into R-Type.

I love this game, even though I totally suck at it. Actually, I totally suck at ALL shoot-em-ups. I found some European version of this game at a game market in Korea when I was living there. I was so happy to find it. Awesome video! I'm happy to see you have time to make more videos these days. Keep it up.

I'm so familiar with this version of R-Type (well the DX one specifically) that when I look at the original arcade version it always looks weirdly high-resolution!

Keep an eye out for it Tooty, it's pretty common - if you see DX, I'd say grab that instead because it's got a whole host of features and contains both R-Type 1 & 2 ;) I'll review that later in the month though!

This is one of the game boy games I owned as a kid and the only one I couldn’t finish because of that damned level 4. I recently played it again and nope, couldn’t make it thru level 4. Nice to learn so many new things about this game after so many years! Didn’t know the game of life was in there!

This was one of the first Gameboy games I ever got in my collection, making it one of the first video games I ever owned. And my god the new level 4 (previously level 6 in the original) is an absolute bastard! I was NEVER able to get past it, time after time, until I eventually just gave up and moved on to other games. Cut me some slack, I was about 7.

Question... I have heard conflicting reports that the DX version does not play as well if using on an original dmg. Is there any validity to this? I would like a copy of this game, but I'm not willing to sacrifice performance for the inclusion of an entirely new game (included R-Type 2).

Many Japanese developers said it couldn't be done. This is truly a great port, especially when compared to Gradius's gameboy iterations. If you're an R Type fan, get the Gameboy Color version if you haven't already.
