oh boy! Point requirements mixed in with a time limit for a true ending. That seems like a definite formula for some frustration! Thanks for giving Kirby some love, dude!
@rezterralico4369

Really the high score is for using small kirby to double hit the grey blocks. If you use A button puff kirby you take out the blocks faster but get way less points. Say you take out a larger grey block with the small block you get the 4 smaller square blocks. Way more points that way and also the extra lives at the end of the stage get transfered into extra points. Not that hard to get the borderline once you know that. The bonus bubble blocks get the spike kirby ability to redirect aim the ball. Helps in the time limit. I think you can grab the powerup then exit to a different world with it.

I really loved Kirby's Block Ball. To me, it's basically what Nintendo's other block-breaker game Alleyway should've been. There was a lot more innovation and creativity involved with the formula instead of being the same old thing. On top of that, it wasn't boring as fuck.
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
Nah I 100% agree - I think it's got a ton of innovation, but it's just not my kinda game. It's definitely the most fun I've had playing a block-breaker, but I hate that seeing the true ending requires sinking so much time into the game (not to mention a high degree of luck...)! Thanks for watching as always!
@cattysplat

Alleyway was massively disappointing but it was an early GB game. Likely the developers were just learning how to make games even work for the hardware, let alone make good games.

Another great review, Matt! I picked this one up last year in my drive to collect all the Kirby games and I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting it is for a breakout clone. Sadly, I do agree with you that the requirements to get the true ending are maddening. The music from stage 5 is one of my favourite Game Boy tunes, though! Star Stacker is definitely one of the Game Boy greats. I picked that one up last year as well and was hooked on it for ages!
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
The music in this game throughout is pretty damned good imo! It's one of the rare videos where I could actually score the bedding music with the feeling of that part of the video because the game's got such a range in it's sound track! I love Star Stacker - it's on the list of games to cover, so expect to see it fairly soon imo! Thanks for watching!

@@GameBoyle You just need to hit the grey colours once then hit the white blocks to get the higher score. That and extra lifes get converted into points at the end of the world. Not that hard to get the borderlines if you follow that method. I never understood that as a kid when I had this back in 1996 as my one summertime gameboy game of choice. I lived playing arkanoid before my piano lessons on this computer so this game was a dream come true. Yeah some of the bubble bonus blocks can be a pain to get without the proper powerup. Spike to redirect helps with that.

Mat!! Of course it wouldn't be BOYO GRAPHIC without learning something new about a nearly 25 year old game!! I've owned Block Ball for years now and it's probably one of the 1st games in my collection I purchased after deciding to start collecting in 2006... Boarder Line unlocks & an 11th stage??!!! I wonder if the Gameboy Game Genie has any codes to assist?? I use it sparingly...lol. Looking forward to the next Japan-exclusive episode!! I will be playing Block Ball on my Analouge Pocket tonight!! Thanks Amigo! PS: Nice shout out to Akihabara! Spent a ton of time there 2002-2004. Purchased my Orange GC and first GBA Clamshell there!

Haha I'm glad I can illuminate the some of the secrets of games people know well, even if they're incredibly frustrating haha! If the game genie unlocks it, please let me know... I keep playing it when I get a few minutes to spare, but it's too frustrating lol... Thanks as always for watching Andres! P.S. Nice! I got my Orange GC in a Book-off somewhere around Taito (near the 'Asakusa' temple)... Ironically I also got the Char Gundam Clamshell from there too haha!

I was extremely lucky when I got my copy of this game, because it had a save file 100% completed. So I did a bit of cheating, clearing the game normally in my own save file with no stress, and then jumping to the completed save file to play the final stage and beat the final boss. Basically letting the accomplishments of some kid in the 90's carry me to the finish line. But I don't feel no shame at all, I have too many games to play and beat in the old DMG to just grind away in this very punishing one. Quite honestly I am yet to see the final boss in Kirby's Pinball Land, haven't quite got that good run from start to finish.
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
I beat Pinball Land as a kid, but the amount of PTSD people seem to have about the end of that game is really making me question how soon I want to cover it haha... I want to eventually do an 'All the Glory' of Block Ball, but right now it doesn't seem likely any time soon haha! Thanks for watching as always Diego!
@diegog1853

@@GameBoyle I don't know why it gives me so much trouble, the closest I've got is beating two of the three stages. I must just suck at pinball games. And again, the savefil of some kid is just humiliating me lol, with high scores orders of magnitud bigger than whatever I can achieve. Great video like always, well written and researched, keep up the good work.

Love this. This is a game I've never tried, had no idea it'd be one of the more interesting arkanoid type of games. I know lots of people consider Kirby games as casual so I can see why this exists. Shame about the high score system though, hopefully someday you'll get the true ending if you feel like it :p
@GameBoyle

This is one my of my Top 5 Game Boy games for sure. It's really strange hearing that people don't like it, but I guess you really need to be into the genre to enjoy it. I even liked the border line system, it was fun trying to figure out how to maximize your points, especially in the later levels. And the battery save makes all the difference. Don't get me wrong, I love Pinball Land as much as the next guy, but the lack of save feature brings it down in my opinion. I think this is the best Kirby spin-off title on the Game Boy family.
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
I think Star Stacker is the best spin off for me, but I totally see why you like this game - I just don't like the genre enough to stick with the game and get the satisfaction out of the borderline system... You are right though, the lack of saves in Pinball Land is a massive detractor from my enjoyment of that game. I beat it a few times as a kid, but I've never tried to beat it again as an adult... Eventually I'll go back to do it for the channel, but let's see when that is haha! Thanks for watching!

I didn't really understand what people meant when they said this game becomes surprisingly difficult. Now I think I get it lol I've always enjoyed listening to this game's soundtrack. It's interesting that it's not by the usual Kirby composers.
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
Yup - it's an odd game to classify the difficulty of tbh because yes, it can be a bit tricky while playing it, but it's more having to reply levels again and again / the element of chance that drives the challenge up for sure. And I really do dig the sound track of this game - it feels a little different from the other Kirby games for me, but doesn't feel totally out of place either lol...!

Of topic but since you mention yakuza and persona,I'll just add that I like SMT and Persona games,but I love Yakuza and their spinoffs.I've discovered few years ago and now I have ton of Yakuza (Judgment etc.) games to play but since I don't want to burn out by this wonderful games I'm trying to play around 2 or 3 yakuza games per year. Also I really like Kirby but I will play "main" entry games. I really loved two on 3DS Triple Deluxe and planet robobot. I'm Mario and Luigi fan so I bought them all (shame that devs go out of business because of poor sales of last two remakes)
@GameBoyle
@GameBoyle 2 жыл бұрын
I specifically said Persona rather than SMT because I find the SMT games hit and miss (playing Soul Hackers 2 atm and just can't get it to click), but Yazkua and it's subsequent spin-offs are amazing! I never really got into the M&L games, but I really understand why people love them! It's a shame as you say they're out of business now!

@@GameBoyle Yeah sadly some smt games aren't that special. I was pretty hyped for Soul Hackers 2 since original was pretty cool,but a lot people have problem with this new game especially in first half of game(boring dungeon design,story and party etc). Trails of the cold steal are pretty decent jrpgs( not that high budget and style as persona)

wow I've been playing this game recently too, it's really good...until I have to use the vertical paddles then it gets too big brain for me that is a shame that you have to master and get really lucky in the game to actually beat it, but I think just for casual play it's still a no brainer pick up/downlaod
