My interpretation of the goldfish line in Love Lost hearkens back to another verse in the song where he says, “This love was new to me, and I never knew what it would do to me.” It’s symbolic of getting your first pet goldfish-a quite common experience. In that regard, it makes sense that someone innocent, naive, or even unequipped for new experiences in life (or responsibilities, like a child taking care of their first pet) might feel the same way. Much like when that goldfish dies, it’s debilitating and leaves a wistful impact. Not knowing how to deal with such complicated emotions for the first time can lead to a lack of understanding and even apathy-hence losing interest or falling out of love. In summary, the goldfish is a reminder of heartbreak and what he lost: interest in the form of a relationship. With this insight, it’s actually quite a powerful metaphor.
