If BP brought chargers to all TA stations across the country it would be a game changer, especially west of the Misssissippi. Would be a lot more flexibility even for cars that have the range to get between existing chargers currently. For me personally there are large charging deserts in West Texas and New Mexico. Even with a Tesla adapter there are significant deviations or insane hypermiling techiques required for shorter range EVs. In a perfect world, I would like to be able to tow a travel trailer from my home in Central Texas to the mountains of New Mexico with my newly acquired Lightning with the Standard Range and that would require being able to stop for a charge every 60-80 miles. For now it's a pipe dream. The Lightning SR is on lease anyway, I will probably look for a truck with more range next time, whether that's a Lightning ER, Rivian or Chevy. Or something else that's not out there currently.

Outsourcing their hardware, which means they're still dependent on the suppliers' firmware. Meanwhile, Tesla makes their own, which means they define the hardware specs, the firmware, and the operating software. And this is why EA and EVGo stations have a >25% stall outage rate, while Tesla's uptime is industry leading. I mean, good on BP for getting with the program.. but sad they didn't learn anything in the process.
@jimsEVadventures

Alpitronic hardware seems to be pretty solid. The real problem is NOT the hardware or the manufacturer. It’s the maintenance support. There just are not enough. Tesla had their own group. Everybody else outsources.
@ab-tf5fl

"And this is why EA and EVGo stations have a >25% stall outage rate" Anecdotally, EA has gotten a lot better the past year or two. A 25% stall outage right seems about right for 2022, but I think it's a lot less, today. EVGo, on the other hand, still has some big problems. They have a lot of stations with old charging hardware, some of it back from 2015'ish, which is constantly breaking down. EVGo also has a tendency to be very expensive. I recall one parking lot in particular I visited that had both EVGo and EA, and in spite of the EVGo being limited to 50 kW, they actually charge more for the electricity than EA does, thereby creating a financial incentive for Bolts to clog up the EA stalls, leaving to 50 kW stall unused.

Jim thank you so much for this episode. I’ve been driving since the early 80’s and for most of my life I believed that gasoline was simply gasoline and fueled my cars with the cheapest out there. 7 years ago I began driving Uber and of course you watch everything about your car to maximize income including how much gas you’re using and the cost. Well, I was primarily fueling at QT because it was the cheapest. One it just happened BP was my only option. And that is when I instantly realized that there is gasoline and there’s quality gasoline. I noticed in my 2016 sonata hybrid that I got much better gas mileage using BP gasoline. The same was found with Shell but I much favored BP. And from that point on I fueled most with BP. Fast forward, in 2023 I got rid of the sonata and purchased my very first electric car, a 2023 Bolt EUV Premier sky blue. We also added in 2024 A Blazer EV RS. And we’ve never been happier with our cars! So now you’re telling me I can still count on BP to offer me quality fuel and experience for my EVs. Cool beans Jim! I’m now looking forward to charging with BP. I’m thrilled.😊

To make refueling EVs for rental car places and similar a hell of a lot more convenient. There are 3 gas stations within a mile of Hopkins airport in CLE. The closest Testa is 15 minutes away and the closest non-Tesla is 20 minutes.

Rental returns. Ubers. Taxis. People who drive EVs to pick up friends, relatives. The list goes on.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 23 сағат бұрын
@@stephkent2736 I rented a Tesla out of CLE last year, and actually found the supercharger near the airport to be in a very good location, as I could get from the charger to the rental car center in just a few minutes, using just 3% of the battery, without needing to even get on the freeway. However, the place is probably optimized mostly for rental car returns; I can see how rideshare drivers picking up a passenger at the airport might want to be a bit closer. For a really optimal airport location, SEA actually has an EVGo right in the airport's Cell Phone lot. It did seem very busy, though, and I can see a charger there being very attractive to rideshare drivers. After all, if you're going to be sitting and waiting in your for a passenger anyway, may as well pick up some electricity while you're doing it. (I did not actually plug into this charger, as I have a home charger 20 miles away and, therefore don't need it).

I will start by saying that I am not an EV owner yet. I only know ICE vehicles. I saw this question on another channel, and think it needs an answer. If my vehicle is only capable of getting 100 kilowatts of charging but the only chargers are 350 kilowatts which comes at a premium price. Can you change the charging rate and get a lower price per kilowatt? Like you do at a gas pumps. Please feel free to correct me if the terminology is incorrect.
@jimsEVadventures
@jimsEVadventures Күн бұрын
Actually a good question. Some charging networks DO charge higher rates for faster speeds (Jule Energy), but most just charge by the kWh. If you need 100 kWh added to your pack, you pay for 100 kWh-no matter the speed.
@terryfleming7084
@terryfleming7084 Күн бұрын
@ Thank you. I asked you this because on a video on Out of Spec Reviews 11 days ago they did a charging challenge between a Tesla Model 3 and an IONIQ5. In that video the question was asked. It was a Tesla Super Charger, if that makes any difference. My linking skills are limited since I’m a boomer. Over 65. 😂
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 23 сағат бұрын
You can't directly lower your charging speed to save money. But, you can always shop around for the cheapest charger along your route, just like ICE vehicle drivers do, looking for the cheapest gas station. Often (but not always), the cheapest charger tends to have a lower power limit, creating some tradeoff between price and speed. But, as long as the speed is faster than what your car can accept, anything faster than that offers no benefit.

@jimsEVadventures
@jimsEVadventures 2 күн бұрын
Their EV infrastructure is a huge step in the right direction. But also their DECREASE in oil leases and oil exploration is a meaningful step. We can’t shut off the spigot overnight, but when a company realizes their main product is on a dying trajectory and they take steps to decarbonize, I’ll support that decision. If they go back to “business as usual,” I’ll dump them faster than a snowflake melts on Venus.

The same phenomenon occurs in oil fields and on top of coal mines. The same wealthy individuals who profit from fossil fuels often also invest in wind turbines on the same land. Yet, they support political parties that mislead voters about sustainable energy. I've worked with wind turbines on land owned by farmers who consistently vote for politicians who claim these turbines kill birds, even though they have never witnessed a single bird death. Or, as a truck driver, I've been to once-desolate areas where the largest moneymaker is a place that makes either wind turbine parts or solar panels. People are always surprised when I point this out. It seems there's always a need to rally support around one fear-mongering tactic or another. The wealthy will profit from the very things they demonize.

I’ll shut this line of reasoning down right now. “Rich man is out to get me” is the same mantra the brought us Karl Marx and Saul Alinsky. That dog don’t hunt on Jim’s EV Adventures. Each of us has free-will and we live in freedom. We get to vote who we want to vote for. Our political parties swing in the direction WE direct them. Unfortunately, some people are brainwashed by one or the other of the extremist views. View 1: The sky is falling and e are all going to die in a climatological apocalypse. View 2: There is no climate issue, so burn all the carbon-based fuels you can drill. View 3: Reality. The truth lies somewhere between View 1 and View 2. What WE can all do is drive market demand. I believe BP sees the opportunity to shift from oil and gas to “energy” and will make that happen. Fast enough? I don’t know. But in going to put my “market demand” on clean energy. Whichever company follows my desires will get my business.
