Dealing with BPD is a challenge all its own but when we add the complexity of perceptual biases the end result can be even more disheartening and severe. In this video we’re going to discuss a perceptual bias called the availability heuristic. This is a bias based on information you gather in the world around you paired with easy recall of similar information that causes to reach a false conclusion that you believe is 100% accurate and true. We’re going to break this down to help you challenge it to lessen its adverse impact on your perception and how it affects you BPD.
Daniel J. Fox, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Texas, international speaker, and a multi-award winning author. He has been specializing in the treatment and assessment of individuals with personality disorders for over 15 years in the state and federal prison system, universities, and in private practice. Thank you for this. I was fortunate to recognize that i needed time to process what an angry sibling said to me, instead of reacting as i would have done . This has made all the difference in being able to assess "the objective truth" of what was said and to develop healthy responses when I reconnected with that sibling. Taking "time out" and thinking has saved me countless hours of anxiety, second-guessing, and other drama.

I remember learning about the availability heuristic in my college psych class. Thank you for going into a deeper explanation with bpd. I struggle a lot with loneliness because I don't have many friends. The friends I do have live far from me so the only way to talk to them is via text. Due to past experiences of people telling me that I was too much for them and cutting me off I get very, very scared these friends will leave me too. I get really scared and worried when I don't hear from them or even see a slight change of 'tone' from them. This video helped me reassure myself to not make such quick judgements of myself (thinking I'm bothering them or that I'm a bad friend) and them (thinking they'll ghost me)

I totally understand how this feels. My mom, who is now 86!, has struggled her whole life with codependency. Her life goes up & down based on peoples’ demeanor toward her, without considering what these particular people are personally going through. It’s exhausting to live this way. During one conversation about this issue with my mom, based on one woman’s attitude toward her, tho mom had done nothing offensive, I told my mom about codependency & said to her, “In those moments when someone is not behaving toward you in the way you want them to, you need to step back & ask yourself if you are okay without their approval. Can you be okay just with yourself?” She thought for a moment and said she could. So I told her that’s what she has to do. If we live dependent on peoples’ moods or responses or lack thereof to us, life is an absolute roller coaster ride! Up & down we go. BUT, the tortoise & hare approach works well. Slow down, check in with yourself, and remember you are okay with or without peoples’ approval. We are created in the image of God and He loves us…that is true security. 🕊

This video could not have come at a more perfect time. The example of the lack of communication thrusting someone experiencing BPD down a rabbit whole happened to me last night and has left me feeling extremely shaken, because I’m aware that my thought process is warped but I have a hard time expressing it to others and helping them understand that this is how I feel and I KNOW it doesn’t make sense and I don’t know how to not feel it. So this video helps me feel less crazy, and helps me understand myself and gives me a really great way to explain myself to my significant other

Tortoise and hair is a great analogy to encourage patience and introspection. Well presented. This particular heuristic deserves more time and careful attention. The impacts of this cognitive bias extend well beyond those temporarily interested in BPD because of divorce, trivial conflict or they grew tiresome of the TikTok narcissism fads. It permeates more than just the laymen who goes full on BPD because someone didn't respond to a text quick enough. Considering the troubles that saturate the electorate as a representative sample, believing something is common place because you have just one example of it is certainly not exclusive to the BPD crowd.

this is such an interesting and validating video!!! the way that i always describe this mode of thinking to my loved ones is that once i have a bad thought, it starts a chain reaction to other bad thoughts that i've had in the past, and then i get reminded of those things and get upset about it even more, (then usually mad at myself for getting upset like i always do), which usually leads to a meltdown, panic attack, or episode in general. it's so satisfying to see it articulated in such an incredible way that offers a better solution and healthier way to think about this cycle. thank you so much :)

Dr.D. Fox, This was very insightful. I like how you do the deep inhale and exhale, taking a breath. It reinforces how taking a breath can stop that perhaps “trigger” or situation from getting out of control. Sometimes, when someone says something hurtful in a text, go ahead and type that horrible response, but read it first, then take your breath again and delete everything you just typed. It is better not to hastily respond, and just not respond at all. For me, It is like creating a “boundary” of sorts. Hope this helps someone :)

Don't worry, it's honestly not your fault. It's more about finding someone that fits into your kind of insane with their kind of insane - of course please keep working on yourself but for you, not some dude. So many guys are egotistical and refuse to put any effort into the relationship or themselves, they see us as responsible for everything bad, we're "crazy", can't even give us an ounce of empathy for what we went through to be the way we are - depending on where you live it can be worse or better but that's patriarchy. My fiancé of 6 years has his own issues, lots of anxiety, he used to have the lowest self-esteem when we met and thought he didn't deserve anything positive in his life - I like to think that I've helped him break out of this awful mindset although he's still struggling from time to time. He is a very caring man, whenever I feel guilty he has to help me AGAIN he laugh and says that a relationship is never 50-50, he's empathetic even though he's not good at showing it. This relationship is the most stable and secure I've had in my life. No "normal" person could've given it to me. He has his moments when I have to kinda stomp him - he sometimes tries to push the blame for his own shortcomings on me and it won't fly, I force him to face his own feelings and get out of this denial. But he's self-aware enough to be able to do this work on his own instead of running away further into wonderland, he just needs a bit of tough love. His caring nature and my perfect emotional radar work great in tandem. I'm not especially gentle and he's pretty bad at reading and understanding emotions, we need each other 🤣

I don't make quick decisions anymore because I realized that I often regret what I've done the very next day. So I have to sleep on it, sometimes for a few days before I know how I really want to move forward. Then when something really bad happens, I usually freeze and try to keep breathing slowly until I can get myself together. I'm just tell myself to stay calm, repeatedly. Seems I often end up feeling numb, but at this point, I find myself enjoying.

So basically this is an internalized confirmation bias type lens which we filter the world through? And because we ( like you said) have a very loud, aggressive internal critic- this is why the negative/ catastrophe fight or fight, reactionary thinking takes over? Even people without BPD have oftentimes unrealistic expectations.I work with humans. They think today in quick fixes but it will take years. I like the advice to think about what else could be possible. Millions of people lock their keys in the car. He is in a meeting, he is working and stressed he will answer later… this gives space to feel the emotion and to calm myself down… Again many people have bad working concepts from childhood… you are not alone….

I took this so far as to believe I needed to voice i don't want to ever be around him drunk and if he didn't want to stop drinking then we needed to break up because we could never be happy. Hi Dr. Fox, I was wondering about your views on psychiatric service dogs for people with BPD. I’ve read a few research studies on the positive effects for people with PTSD and other disorders, but there seems to be very little in regards to BPD. To me it seems like it’d be a no brained since we have such crippling fears of being alone. I think service dogs could really help people with BPD integrate better into society and maybe have less negative perceptions, but then again I’m not the doctor!

Personally, I know that my dogs help me so much. She picks up whenever I'm anxious or depressed and she'll give hugs/kisses or she'll lay down the length of my body, the pressure makes me feel safer. Also whenever I feel "out of it" she's able to "bring me back" and distracts me (and usually cheers me up). Since I've had her I don't feel completely alone.

But how can you slow yourself down when there are moments in bad situations that actually validate those negative thoughts, those bad memories & maladaptive behaviors? Example: You come home from work to an empty house and send a text to your boyfriend wondering where they are and then realize their phone is off and when you do speak on the phone, you get a lot of aggression and find out they are very angry with you without understanding why? Because things seemed okay the day before. Thank you for everything you do

In moments like these I switch from BPD to NPD and back constantly. It's either all their fault because I would've known if I've done something wrong to this idiot and how dare he even attempt to evaluate something I've done and decide for himself how he feels (I'm like a god in this scenario), or it's all me and I'm worthless and how could I have let myself be with someone when I was well aware nobody will ever love me (I'm the gullible moron in this scenario). Anyways I'd feel blindsided but it would be their fault for not being able or willing to communicate what's wrong, if you're trying to reach them and you get no details...

What about the family member who does this and throws all the shame and rage and hate all over you, not their perfect thoughtless own self? As they habitually jump to false accusations and conclusions when you never even received their text and they swirl so much they only thought they sent it or that I could read their mind. And during when I’m truly in a crisis and they are not, but constantly demand immediate attention and answers to literally trivial fake crisis as if they have sudden panic for lack of their own management issues; they demand instant answers during a time I am unavailable and then absolutely destroy and assault my character and everything about me like a sucker punch when they haven’t even communicated. They have many behaviors of several disorders so I’m not sure exactly what’s going? They have characteristics of each of the Cluster B disorders and have been abusive to me all my life. Including extreme spiritual abuse which is there nonstop constant insults if they don’t get their way which as usual, they habitually don’t even communicate, habitual ambushes.

You should do videos to accompany each chapter of your book. I'm up to part 2. Fearful, petulant, and primary symptoms: highly reactive, intense anger, paranoid, abandoned, suicidal thoughts/plans. Also, why isn't anxiety listed as a symptom? I also have chronic anxiety. Honestly, I'm having a hard time after reading the symptoms you listed, because most are not me. And, my reactions are over real (not percieved) experiences. Yet, I bear this label.

It's not so much in small instances but when I feel like I'm about to have a massive spiral and I'm starting to cry I've been forcing myself to try and sing. Now I'm terrified of singing in front of people so it's usually when I'm alone, mostly when I'm in a car cause I can't just cry and impeed my vision 💀 It takes a while and feels silly and really hard at first but it gets me to calm down enough to at least soften those internal voices

Hello dr fox. My mind cannot find the middle ground between love and hate. While I quickly change from love to hate and I know it's wrong, but I still can't explain the middle to my mind and I get very angry.

I think using a positive outlook is important but build it with facts in your life. Over focusing on the negative or positive is splitting and only causes more distortion. Be well.

How is it easy to fix though? What if you are on the side of the road and your kid is in the car and your phone is also in the car… I’ll tell you, you flag someone down driving passed. They called the fire department to come break my little window because I couldn’t remember anyones phone number

I have realized that this availability heuristic and minor paranoia regarding disloyalty have tainted my thoughts in my past life. This awareness makes it hard when you do see clear signs of things not in your favor or gauging intentions of females because you often want to resort to a positive outlook so you discredit your negative observations as being paranoia or availability heuristic, when in fact, the behavior and body language is proving you were correct. Basically it’s hard to trust your gut with awareness that these biases exist. But in regards to interpreting females, I think this is a problem for every man and not just those with BPD.

Johnny is a nice person and he surrounds himself with nice people, now is not the time for nice lawyers, he's going up against ruthless people without morals who will stop at nothing, he needs the same kind of people on his side. It doesn't mean he has to hang out with them afterwards, just pay them well for their job after it's done then walk away.
