Im always on the lookout for a new knife for bushcraft, survival, camping or just plain outdoor use. Ive heard a lot about BPS knives and decided to take a look. I couldn't decide which to choose from so I got two! I compare them against each other here to see if one is better than the other.

I love both grinds however the BPS full grind is great if your going to also use the knife for food processing. There is more for a knife than just carving. I use my knife for cleaning fish etc... By-the-way, BPS is a Ukrainian knife company and it supplies the Ukrainian Army with knives for FREE. I purchased three knives for myself and my sons to help support them and they are awesome knives. I did purchase the bushcraft knife adventurer, but I like this one and I'll probably buy this one for us as well. Thank you from your friends in Florida 🌴

So pleased you brought BPS Knives up. In October I got delivery of the BPS Knives HK5 full tang w/ wooden scales and the same sheath that comes with all their knives it seems. Inexpensive, my interest was in finding SOME item made in Ukraine I might buy, in the way of support... so for less than 40 bucks I figured I could not get hurt. 1066, by my hand on stones & hones, and by eye is, naturally, softer than 1095 so re-profiling the 'factory' scandi-grind to the broad radiused edge I prefer was no problem with hand tools, seated in a chair. I presume 1066 will be rather tough. The *one size fits all our knives* sheath was, in my opinion, stiff and dry but all the leather items I buy feel stiff and dry, so as usual I saturated it with my custom leather oil compound and let it sit for two days. About a month later I bought the Savage Bushcraft as you did (though by then I had given the HK5 to my nephew). My Savage arrived Dec. 9th and there was little for me to do since a full-flat geometry is another one I like though I favor an asymmetrical edge where, for a Right-handed person, the knuckle side is as flat as I can get it with no bevel and essentialy no micro-bevel either. This results in a geometry resembling a Japanese sushi knife for a Lefty which is flat on the thumb side, then I put a significant bevel on My thumb side. This is a trick I learned decades ago as a line cook in the 70s. This shape on the thumb side helps the edge kinda slide over and not catch the fingernails when you are moving fast. More juice for this sheath and I think I will hold on to this one for a while. I feel that this is an excellent way for a small-fry like me to help out.

I picked up the BPS Adventurer, it's kind of like the camp knife you are testing, but with a full tang. Also, the sheath has a small ferro rod on it. Liked it enough to buy another one and then the Nighthawk version. It's the same as the Adventurer, but it has black scales and a black sheath. Of course my wife claimed the Nighthawk. lol The scales on the Nighthawk were just a bit to small and the tang stuck out in a few spots. For $42 it isn't realistic to expect perfect fit and finish. I was going to just hit it with the belt sander, but I contacted BPS to just order a new set of scales. Instead, they explained that a small batch of wood was having an issue with shrinking so the sent meva new set, that fit perfectly, on their dime. That kind of customer service is what will keep me coming back.

I have 2 of the BPS knives. Mine were both around $33. Full tang. Exposed tang at the end. Extremely sharp blade and 90° spine. Excellent thick leather dangler sheaths. I wouldn't have got that camp knife you bought. Not full tang. Good video Dave. HK15 and HK5 are the ones I bought. That Savage looks like the handle is rather wimpy and undersized. I don't know why they didn't make it a little beefier.

Bog Oak is just what it says; ancient oaks that have been preserved in the moist, peat bogs of Europe. The best known are Ireland with a long history of carving smoking pipes, small art pieces and making Knife grips like the Scottish skian Dhu ( black knife) It rock hard, incredibly stable and Jet black. My Irish grandmother also commented ‘ it’s ugly as death itself ‘ Christopher

Bought one of these (BK06) about 2 months ago, came with sheath and Ferro rod. One the best sheath knives I have ever bought. Quality is top notch. Feels good in your hand. I thought balance was good. Dangler/belt loop sheath is outstanding. Thank for showcasing a really good product.

I have several of the bps knives with the scandi grind. The one I have are all 1066 carbon. I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a better knife at their price point. Great video.

Hey, Dave! Wow, you've got two killer deals in your hands right now! I checked Amazon and you can get both knives for the same price of $40, or both of them as a bundle for $73. Now, I've always been a flat grind sort of guy, but once I started watching your videos, I saw the value of a Scandi grind, and here's why: The flat grind knife is easier to maintain a good edge on because the angle of the grind is more acute and thus is already angling to an edge, but the trade off is that the steel of the blade is weaker and more prone to breakage, so in the bushcrafting world, it's not as versatile because I'd never trust a flat grind knife to burrow holes in wood like you would for making a hand-drill or bow drill for making fire, but the scandi is beefier and less apt to break. If it sounds like I love both knives, I do! Haha! I believe I'd use the flat grind for curls and slicing veggies and such and the scandi for the brunt of the work load, but if I had to only have one, it'd be the scandi, but that's me. (I am never above having more than one blade on me at a time, though). Thanks once again for making my Friday start out with some wonderful video watching, Dave. I have the BPS knock-off of the Mora HD. It is full tang, and except for its tendency to rust, it has become my main neck knife. I blued it, and I put beeswax on it as maintenance, and for my use, it is ten out of ten. :)

Flat grinds work great for pocket knives and cutting rope...outside of that in a survival situation I prefer the following.....CPM3v or Elmax A full tang ( not rat tail ) a 1/4 blade thickness with a sharp 90 degree spine ( must strike a ferro rod ) blade length of at least 6" and 7" would be perfect ( better for battoning ) and finally the most important feature on a Survival knife which I feel there is a difference between Bushcraft and Survival and that is your knife grind in my opinion needs to be convex. Yes I like SCANDI but I find SCANDI only suited for small tasks whereas CONVEX has more versatility and holds an edge longer especially if you are splitting wood. For my scandi grind brothers out there yes they make curls like crazy but in survival your tasks will encompass so much more...give Convex a try. Very nice bushcraft knives Dave. I am sure you will love them.

My Opinel knives will do a lot of wood work, but they are better at slicey dicey stuff. My Mora will cut/chop food, but it’s better at wood work. The same with the knives you were using. As you demonstrated, both blade grinds can be used to do a lot of tasks, but each grind has its place. ✌️🇺🇸😘👏👏👏👏 Have a great weekend.

Consumate artistry, Dave! -- with the knives and camera both. As it happens, I picked up the flat grind model recently, and one of their full tang scandi grinds previously. The flat grind excels for food prep tasks too, as well as game processing like you mention. About the most savage cutting I'm likely to do is sawing on a hunk of meat or block of cheese! And I completely agree with your appraisal of their "category" -- since I don't own any fancy blades, these are my premium cutting tools!

Seems similar quality to Moras. Flat grinds are not ideal for curls. The flat grind bites, and digs into the wood. Thanks for the comparison of the two! I'll stick with my 73 forge blades. Thanks for sharing with us Dave!

It is called Bog Oak because it is a tree or a piece of oak, that has been laying in a bog for thousands of years. And they have become a super stabile wood for knifegrips. That is also the reason they are black.

(especially if they've gotten wet and dried out a few times). But that's just personal preference. I don't know if they make a skandi-grind in full tang, but that's my favorite. BPS knives are great! I have 3 of them, none of which are one of those lol. I can't remember the model nbrs other than the Adventurer, and I have the one that looks like the Condor Bushlore, and the one with a slight recurve. 1066 is ok, but nothing special. It's fairly tough, but won't hold it's edge for long. It sharpens easily, and if you don't let it go entirely dull, it strops back to sharp pretty well. I've enjoyed using mine. Mine are all scandi grinds, and I blued 2 of them to hopefully keep the rust at bay. I use my pocket knife for food normally, so I'm not worried about the bluing contaminating my food, but I did leave one of them raw steel. I may do a apple cider vinegar patina on that one. 1066 WILL rust if you don't maintain it. The scandi grinds work great, but I am thinking of getting the Savage too. I always enjoy your videos Dave. Thanks for the years of very helpful and educating work you have put into your videos!!!

Been a fan of BPS knives for a few years now, got my first early in 2021. That HK5S has served me well as the all around camp knife; carving, notching, and even some light battoning of kindling. The 1066 blade is 1.2" wide and .11 thick, so its quite a good slicer. Have a total of 4 BPS knives with blade lengths of 3.5", 4.1", 4.5" to 5.1" and all have the Scandi grind and are 1066 carbon steel. The smaller ones live with the "kitchen" cooking stuff, the 4.5" is a spare buried in the bottom of my main pack. Back when I went hog wild buying them, BPS knives were between $21 and $35, all with sheaths that were worth the price of admission by themselves. 1066 seems to hold a decent edge. If used as designed, a good stropping is all that's needed at the end of the day. I do have 'bigger' toys for harder jobs; just like in any tool box, use the right tool for the job and you will not be disapointed. But you already knew that.

Hv 2 of the hk 1s.. Over a year now with no regrets. Peeled some Brazilian pepper wood & it puts a nice dark patina on em. Skinned out a few hogs too.. So far they hv been the perfect size for my need's..

Great demonstrations Dave, both seemed like really great knifes. If I had to pick one it would be the camp knife. I don’t require all my knives to be full tang, as a matter of fact it’s a advantage to me as a neck knife cause of the lighter weight. These days I like my gear to be lighter anyway. I’m not one for batoning either with a knife, but if I do I have tools for that. Bring old school I really like leather sheaths. I’m sold on these knives and will go shopping, other than a mora it’s hard to find that quality at that price. Also I really like the looks of the camp knife, it’s very traditional like. The BPS are good knives. I have the Savage and I modified mine. I sanded the wooden handles with 2,000 grit sand paper to give them a nicer finish and I also used gun blue on the blade so now the knife is all black.

The 'Savage' is more a chefs knife for the outdoor kitchen. The BK06 more a very cold/hot weather wood processing knife. I only have the BS1FT in stainless and that's a compact knife. I bought it when BPS was relatively new in the market and it came with a very sturdy heavy duty green canvas sheath instead of leather. I actually like that since it dries quicker and keeps it shape better than leather. The 'Adventurer' is by shape also more a chefs knife but has a scandi grind. It's a bit longer but I would say best of both worlds. If a knife is 3mm or under thick at the spine I don't like a flat grind or high saber grind. It becomes to weak mostly at the tip. For in the home kitchen no problem of course. When it's 4mm or over thick at the spine now a high saber or flat grind can be ok since it's still strong and the grind will increase the food prep part. So for me the turning point is at about 3,5mm. For a wood carver a narrow blade is better and for food prep a wider blade that reaches under the handle so your knuckles won't hit the cutting board so much. What I'm really waiting for is for the Friction Folder SSH to come back in stock but that might never happen. If so I would buy 2 of them and 1 Adventurer. But as always a good review and demonstration of techniques.

Hi David, Very interesting comparison. When those knives first came out, I was told that the steel used in those knives was salvaged from destroyed Russian tanks. It is for this reason why they could be sold at low prices. I do not know how true the knife story is but it was the story tthat accompanied the knives as they opened the market in the US. I just thought that I would add this sidenote. When that war is over these knives are likely to explode in cost and collectibility. I have been thinking about adding two or three of each style to my collection, just as an investment. One to use and two to set back in pristine condition. The Slavic people have an intensely high interest in well made knives and really know how to make them. Svord brand knives are a highly respectable brand of knife made in Czechia. But every Slavic nation has great knifemakers. I suspect that because of the popularity of Swedish and Norwegian knives and axes, the Slavs will much more pronounced in the near future. Their knowledge of knife, sword and axe making, even warhammers, is very old going way back in time to when the Romans ruled. The Ukrainians have a very proud history of knives. The Cossacks of the Ukraines even do knife dances with incredible throwing accuracy as they dance. There are videos on KZbin of both Russian and Ukrainian Cossacks dancing and culture. Theirs was a warrior society of many tribes. Their horsemanship and blade use on horseback is nothing less than stunning. Look them up on you tube and sit back on your couch with a nice mug of cold sweetened iced tea and relax as you watch how they handle a four foot long steak knife or rather sword and how they throw knives at each other's feet. There is incredible beauty in their culture even dancing without knives. Well, God willing, I'll talk at you later and God bless you and the ones you love ! A friend always !

Hello David. I bought the Adventurer, has the fire steel. Bought the bush craft. And then bought the sheath with the with the rod sleeve. I then did a forced patina on them. I used a coat of Obenaufs on the sheaths. Worked out well. The sheaths are great as well. Have a great weekend. TAKE CARE..

I absolutely love bps... so much so that a started a review channel 2 years ago specifically to get more information and exposure to this humble company. That 1066 is some of the toughest carbon steel I have ever used, and I prefer it to 1095 and the likes for its superior deformation resistance. They have quite a few designs that I prefer to your choices, and guessing from your channel i would say that the bs2fts is probably the best model for your needs. Anyways, thanks for getting more exposure to these guys. Amazing products at a super fair price and outstanding customer service. Get em while they are still cheap

Lol...I own 5 of these. I found them about a year or so ago while looking at European makers. Cannot beat the value fir money. My favorite is the bc1. It's a copy of the Condor bushlore which I own aswell. Half the price and I can't tell the difference. Oh Bog oak is oak that has been sitting in a wetland submerged for a long time. Pretty cool. Dave, I have a couple of BPS knives and love them. I have the flat grind one that I would use more for food prep and have the BPS Adventurer Bushcraft knife (full tang) that comes with a ferro rod for $39.95 on Amazon. The Adventurer is my wood working knife as it has the scandi grind. I’m glad to see that you’re out there using their knives and enjoying the great outdoors. I, like you, enjoy trying different knives. I told myself a couple of weeks ago that I wasn’t going to buy another fixed blade knife. That lasted a whole week 😂. Bought a Hultafors and my excuse was that I hadn’t tried that companies knives. No kidding, I’m not going to buy another knife until I find one I havent tried. 😊

Yes it is. It’s the Hultafors Craftsman, $12.99 on Amazon. It’s comparable to a Mora price wise. No square back to throw sparks, but I’m working on it. No luck so far. Still cuts wood really well and is a handy little knife.

Another fine review! Testing the two knives side by side was most helpful; I have seen people explaining their preference for one grind over another, but this was the first comparison I have seen with knives from the same steel, and I expect same heat treat. You showed the utility of the two grinds very well. I have the BPS 1 with scandi grind, but have not put it to use yet. Think I will buy a BPS with a flat grind because the Scandi looks lonely. By the way, tell me about that axe, please. Looked very useful, though the handle looked a bit long for strapping to a pack. Please keep your videos coming. I have a lot of your videos from before to catch up on, but I would like more to keep me going well into future. McCoy

I absolutely love my US Navy MK2 KaBar knife! It's a nice heavy blade and has endured a lot of stuff over the decades. Plus I have a really nice Gerber Infantry fighting knife my son bought me. It also has a nice thick blade. I honestly believe that makes the difference. A heavier knife is going to be easier to work with. That's why you were able to accomplish your tasks easier with the "BK06" knife as opposed to the "Savage" knife.

Hey Dave, I'd go with either one, but the only thing I'd do would be to modify the Camp knife with a hole in the handle for a lanyard. It seems to me the Savage would be more apt for fileting fish and skinning than bushcraft and camping. I like them both, though. Thanks for the review.

I like "Full Tang" and that's my preference, but I'm not a Flat Grin fan, I'm a Scandi, Saber, and Convex Grin fan, and a little bit of a hollow grin. And I just don't like any stick tang, must be a full tang. Great video Dave, thanks for sharing.

I ordered a Savage, can't wait to try it out. You have piqued my curiosity about the Schrade that was almost unusable. Did you do a video on that one and I missed it? I'd like to see your take on the Ontario RAT6 in S35VN. It's another full flat grind but really nice price for a made in the US knife in a super steel. Love your vids.

I didn't do a video on the Schrade knife, I hate making an entire video trashing a knife. If I remember it was a sch56 something. Horrible knife. I love Ontario's but I'm not a huge fan of full flat grinds. I'm glad you like the videos!

I like both knives but I feel better knowing and seeing that my knife is full tang. In a survival situation I would feel better also knowing it was full tang but if I was just camping I would have no problem with the BKO6 camp knife. I'm like you I never baton with a knife and never have because that is not what they are for. Here in Texas I can always find plenty of wood on the ground I don't need too. 1066 should work fine if heat treated and tempered properly. CS used to have machetes made in South Africa that even Les Stroud used on his show that were 1055, Howard Clark made a katana out of 1086 M on Weaponmasters, and everybody knows about 1095 CV. I've been thinking about picking up an Savage and Adventurer from BPS. Great stuff! Thanks brother!😁

So far these 1066 blades have held up well. I have two cold steel 1055 machetes and man they are almost impossible to sharpen but hold and edge forever! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching

Hello Dave. You put these through more of a practical test than torture test. I understand the thoughts of, you've gotta use what you've got. But some guys take a knife that size, and go at it like they're gonna build a log cabin rather than survive a day or two. These both look like nice knives. That is one of the BPS knives I own, I have 2, and its pretty good. Not my favorite, love the handle, but the little metal guard piece has come lose and jiggles about.

P.P.S. Not sure if any one has mentioned, but if you take the handles off your Savage, you may find some rust. Its easy to sand off. Then coat with mineral oil, put the handle scales back on, and your good to go.
