Great series. I will say that both AMD and Intel have done a pretty good job of keeping the 3/5/7/9 tiers pretty consistent. Ultra Budget - 3 series General use - 5 series Ive got a big boy job - 7 series What is a budget? - 9 series AMD just happened to screwed it up last generation by making the R5 3600 so good everyone could afford baller performance.

Enjoyed the video, and greatly appreciated the emphasis you put on budget. I've found over the years that getting the right balance for PC build vs budget is often harder than people expect. I'm hoping that the forthcoming hybrid CPUs on desktop shake things up in the lower/mid segments and will happily look forward to part 2 of this video should that occur!

Great video. I was upgrading from a 4970k and gtx970. I don't do any hardcore gaming and mostly just WOW or FF14. I had started out wanting a 5900X but sort of came to the conclusion your video did and stuck to a 5600X since it would have been overkill for what I did and I could use a good cheap air cooler. I was also "lucky" enough to win the opportunity to buy an AMD 6700 and a very high end x570 MB that was total overkill for my 5600X from the Newegg shuffle. So far it has handled anything I throw at it with ease. Of course as i write this the new Intel stuff is out and the CPU's from them seem to be slightly cheaper (for a 5600X equivalent) for better gaming performance but the MB's and memory are expensive so I guess it sort of balances out.

For me the main consideration is longevity, since CPUs are expensive to upgrade. By the time you upgrade, you almost certainly will need a motherboard upgrade that supports the newer socket and very likely that also means a new RAM upgrade if those motherboards require newer gen DDR. Motherboards alone these days can easily cost $200+, sometimes twice as much as the CPU, so it becomes a major factor in deciding on an upgrade. Of course by that time you already have upgraded your GPU (for gaming rigs) and you're basically looking at a full upgrade. Point being, while GPU upgrades are fairly straightforward (they all run over PCIe and your only real consideration is if your current PC can fit it, power it, and won't severely bottleneck it), CPU upgrades tend to come with more components to upgrade, so you'll want them around for a lot longer if you can. Of course, that still leaves the exercise of actually weighing whether the additional cost upfront is worth it. A higher tier CPU of the same gen will last longer, but for how long, compared to its price? And older hardware is more prone to failure, if at any point you experience a major failure that's outside warranty and repairability, that's it. *EDIT keep in mind my point about motherboard upgrades only really applies if you're already using a current gen medium and above tier GPU. Of course if you started from an i3 you could upgrade that to an i7 or i9 of the same generation, sometimes even a generation above it, and get good performance without needing to upgrade any other parts. Personally I tend to buy an i5 or i7 from the get-go and stick with it for many generations

Dont get the i9. IMO I got that thing back in 2011 or so for 1000. It still a beast. Iived through a thermal overload when the CPU fan died and the computer stayed running for god know how long. It benchmarked lower than expected after that but better than a lot of newer chips. Ultimately i got phased out because of the chips compatability instead of performance. Now i cant upgrade to newer software despite the chip being capable speed wise. The computer has never been slow at anything. 13 years though. I think ill spend less money and upgrade more often going forward.

GREAT video! I gotta question, I’m building a new PC now and want to build a top of the line badass setup for high end gaming and possible streaming.. I was able to score a 3070ti at the last BB in-store drop (1 person away from a 3080 🤬), and will likely upgrade down the road when the time is right (meaning I can go into a store or online and purchase a 3080 for retail).. I found a solid deal on a 5900x but am having a little trouble figuring out what MB to run with it as I don’t want to spend $500 on the MB.. Would an Asus ROG Strix B550-A Gaming be adequate for a 5900x?

It would but to be honest if you're in Ryzen 9 territory you should really be looking at the X570 boards.

You might want to mention socket support. Intel has been really bad at this and changing the sockets nearly every generation. AMD keeps the same socket for multiple generations, although it is due to change soon, you can expect the new socket to be supported for years. Makes upgrading CPUs much easier and cheaper, since you do not have to buy a new motherboard too.
@chaosordeal294 Жыл бұрын
