I remember spending hours watching one of these as a youth. IIRC, station masters at small stations were allowed to switch cars themselves using these little switchers because they had less than 40HP (?), and thus did not require a full-time licensed loco driver on station. If youre only going to be hauling 3-4 cars at a time (especially the little 2-axle German ones of the day) this makes great sense, you dont wear yourself out climbing 4 steps every time you get in or out to connect a car.
