Great video! Always think good idea to smear some thicker marine/waterproof grease on outside of bearing seal to add another layer of protection to help bearing life 👍

You say that it is possible to tap the non drive side bearing too far, how would you know if you've gone too far or not enough? Will there be too much preload and cause some binding if too far? Will there be play if not far enough?

I've just done it on my Bracciano A27W wheelset this evening thanks to these instructions. I've also replaced the two 6802 bearings in the freehub too at the same time. The trick is to fully seat the drive side bearing home, then you can use the axle to check how much play there is when you attempt to seat the non-driveside bearing. The idea is to seat the non-driveside bearing just enough that there's no more lateral play in the axle. If you've gone too far and preloaded it too much you'll notice that the axle doesn't spin easily (even without the end caps). If you don't seat it far enough, you'll get binding when the end caps are tightened.

I just changed the front bearings, and had a slight problem with axle being misaligned. It might be better to screw in one end cap to the axle before inserting the second bearing, so that the axle is aligned. Please also not the bearing size is OD=20mm ID=9mm W=6mm.

Great info there Graham. It's certainly worth trying this if you're having trouble getting things seated. As to the dimensions of the bearings, yes, those are the dimensions. The bearing code is 699, which is the JIS bearing code standard and uses codes to indicate bearing type and dimensions. JIS requires certain ratios between OD, ID, W which helps keep bearings standardized and avoids "slight mismatches". We recommend buying from vendors who sell by bearing code to ensure that they are selling JIS standard bearings, rather than imitations made by manufacturers who have not gained accreditation within this standard or bearings made with different standards that might use only dimensions.

Bearing size of bracciano

Hi John. Thanks for the question. I've added a few details to the video description. Bearings: Front - 2x (699-2RU) Rear - (6802-2RU) + (6902-2RU) We use Japanese EZO brand. You can also source bearings locally from whatever brands are available. -2RU refers to a seal type with non-contact rubber seals. You can use other seal types, with -2RS being the most common and cheapest. It's not quite as low rolling resistance, but it is an acceptable alternative.
