Unity have their new networking layer on GitHub - github.com/Unity-Technologies/multiplayer. Using that and looking to the FPSSample and seeing how they implemented interpolation, server authority and packet optimization is probably the easier route. I imagine trying to build anything directly on top of the FPSSample code base would be pretty migraine inducing, especially with their hybrid ECS approach, as you mentioned.

@@VivekJha92 no, only the transport layer is there, they still need to provide a replacement for their high-level APIs (HLAPI). Of course you can go ahead and implement those yourself like they did for this project, but unless you're making a huge multiplayer game then I'd just advise to wait for Unity to get their shit together or to take a look at some community assets like Mirror if you're already familiar with UNET

Very cool video & project! Besides attending an actual school for it, what would you suggest for someone who has been a graphic designer for over 20 years (web/digital & print, mostly) and also a developer (mostly web dev recently, with some old school Visual Basic many years ago) who has also been a very avid gamer for over 30 years? I have been sort of mentally building a game in my head for several years now, often brainstorming & adding more and more ideas and details to a possible story & gameplay ideas for an FPS game. It's mainly inspired, story-wise, by games like Halo (one of my all-time favourite games and favourite FPS game; at least until Halo 3, anyway lol). I know there's no quick way to learn something so complex and intricate as building a full-fledge campaign story mode for an FPS game, and I am aware that even just the task of putting together a complete story alone is a task I likely couldn't ever do on my own in any reasonable amount of time, much less design & model it, develop it, and put together all the visual & audio assets. But I would at least like to eventually get to the point where I have a basic, broad-strokes "tech-demo" style project to go along with a completed story arc. At least that way, I could work on building & writing out the story while I work on putting together a brief sample section of a campaign mission, and perhaps one day use them both to scout & recruit other interested people to help put a little time in occasionally to keep it moving forward. The more come back to the idea & build on it with new gameplay & story ideas little by little over time, the more unfortunately frustrated I ultimately get that I have no way to actually put any of it together. I am sure a lot of people say this, but I honestly have had *dozens* of sporadic ideas for entire games/themes, gameplay mechanics, and stories over the years that I have watched eventually be brought to fruition by other people/companies because I never had the capability to get any of them off the ground in any significant ways. I taught myself web development & graphic design over 20 years ago when I was just 12 years old (and back before things like KZbin even existed), so I think it's high time I do the same with video games now, too!

I don't know if anyone will see this but I have an issue. I downloaded the file and properly imported it into unity as a project. everything looks the same except the "project tools". Under levels I only have "Bootstrapper" also mine has less UI like text and the green and red buttons. If someone knows how to fix this that would be great.

This seems robust, I'm curious, are you able to just build the server and host it online not locally then configure the clients to use the online ip so people can play online or is this just configured to run on local host for now? And if you can host online, is it just a matter of having the online ip on the client's end instead of local host or is there some more work that needs to be done in order to get matches going
