Remember: in Bach's time Johann was well known as a solo improviser of spiralling thematic works. I get the sense that the majority of this was improvised with a few preset structures determining the flow of the improvisation: the theme, progression and the ostinato.

This is nothing short of genius... what else can I say. The piece speaks for itself.

He takes the melody from the start and keeps taking it to a mysterious direction (turning a relatively simpler harmony into dissonance that has the ability to evoke a lot of emotions) to finally bring one of the main motifs (1:40) back even more striped down than the start with high energy (6:50). He has stated in an interview that the idea of taking a melody and molding it into something completely different while keeping it the same at some degree is fascinating to him and we can clearly hear that in this piece. Blurring the lines between jazz and classical. I hear this in 5/8 but the way he plays with his natural dynamic tendency, fluidity and elasticity is just awe-inspiring. It's also very interesting that to a listener he seemingly ends the tune at 7:53 but then reintroduces the introduction of the piece to give it more strength. I heard new things each listen.

Are the sudden ritardandos and subdivision inconsistencies voluntary? Opinions? I am personally surprised that they didn't choose a perfect, metronomical, mechanical take - I like it though. Maybe the piece is so damn hard even Brad can't perform it that precisely?

I really doubt Mehldau would have released an official take that he wasn't confident in. That said, I personally enjoy the sudden fluctuations. Perfectly on the grid can be incredibly sterile. I doubt it was intended to be mechanical, and even if you suggest "Oh, but Bach should be played..." yeah, but it's also called "After Bach" and Mehldau is more influenced by the likes of Brahms and, you know, Jazz.
