Final Cut Pro 10.8 is here, and it's packed with some long-awaited features, brand-new AI capabilities, and several small yet impactful updates that will enhance your daily workflow. In this video, I'll walk you through the highlights of this update and share an essential tip you MUST follow before updating to FCP 10.8!
🔍 What's New in Final Cut Pro 10.8? 🔍
Enhance Light and Color Effect: Powered by machine learning, this new feature helps you achieve better lighting and color adjustments effortlessly.
Drag and Drop Effects: Now, you can easily drag and drop effects from the inspector window directly onto clips in the timeline or viewer, making your editing process faster and more intuitive.
Rename Effects: A minor yet super helpful feature that allows you to rename effects, including third-party ones, for better organization when you have multiple effects stacked together.
Smooth Slow Mo: The standout feature of this update! This AI-enhanced slow-motion tool offers better optical flow, making your slow-motion footage smoother than ever.
Before updating to Final Cut Pro 10.8, it's crucial to create a backup of your current version. This will ensure you can roll back if needed. Simply right-click on Final Cut Pro, select compress, and save the zip file. Additionally, back up your important library files before opening them in the new version, as they will be updated and won't be compatible with older versions.
I know this update might not include all the features you've been waiting for, such as auto captions or text-based editing, but the introduction of AI-based features leaves me optimistic about the future of Final Cut Pro. If you have any features you'd love to see in FCP, head over to Apple’s feature request form and let them know! Thanks for the video. Quick question for the feature 1 : if you are recording in D-Log or other flat format, is it working good ? You spoke about that in your vidéo but for someone who struggle with the Color Grading, is it helping to go in the correct way for obtaining a natural look (for example ) ?? Thx

I would suggest adding your D-Log conversion LUT in the inspector window, and then applying the enhance light and color effect. That should give you a really good starting point for a natural look. Hope that helps!

You can't really move the windows around no. But vertical videos on a vertical timeline will display vertically.

Gosh danggit! I had an automatic update on my iMac and got the new update of Final Cut Pro before watching this video. So I wouldn't be able to go back to the previous version in order to create a zip file of version 10.7 would I?

No unfortunately not. Unless you have a time machine backup. I would recommend turning off automatic updates too!

@@thescepterofjudah12 You will be able to if you have other Blu-ray disc writing software, but you won't be able to write to blu-ray directly from FCP. But if you keep a copy of an older version of FCP before updating, you will be able to export the final project from 10.8 and then create your Blu-ray discs from the older version by importing your export.

Before the update if I double klicked on a color correction in the video inspector it jumped directly into the effect. Now after the update it always wants me to rename the color correction/effect. Does anybody know how I can change this double klick setting?

I don’t think you can change it now that you can double click to rename an effect, but if you click on the little color icon on the effect, it’ll open up the effect.

Mine freezes every time I click a title in the viewer to edit the text. Used to do all text editing there no problem. Now I have to edit the text in the text edit window. Also Ken burns effect lags and is feeezy also. I have a Mac Studio with a good build. Anyone else having this?

Are you using a trackpad? Matthew O'Brien experienced bugs in the viewer window when using a trackpad, so I would highly recommend checking out his recent videos.

The 'draw mask' feature doesn't work since the 10.8 update. If i select the area with the pen tool, the Final Cut will stop working and won't be able to use any of the features. It works if you press and touch it instead of clicking with a touch on the trackpad, but it's still very slow. Does anyone know a workaround?

Matthew O'Brien discovered a bug with the Trackpad. The bug didn't seem to happen with a mouse. I'd suggest checking out his recent FCP 10.8 videos. You might find the answer you need 😄

My main issues are that "add freeze frame" still doesn't work correctly and at Apple they still don't know that Mongolian is a real language. I asked several times to add it to the language list in the captions but even in 2024 (!) it is still not added. This new version of FCP looks more like a beta version.

That's odd! Have you tried using a hold frame instead of a freeze frame?

@@Brad_West Thank you for helping. "Hold Frame" isn't very practical for my workflow. I remark that "Add Freeze Frame" is a problem when I apply it to the last frame of a clip. When I apply it somewhere else in a clip it seems to work. It's a workaround, but is works. Thanks again.

I just downloaded it today and so far, not too impressed. It’s more of the same that everyone wants instance satisfaction and not put in the work. I tried to color enhance and it was really weak, yeah if you are on a super tight deadline and you don’t have time, not bad, but like anything if you want quality you have to put in the time. Just like jump cuts. When I taught an editing class some years ago, this was not accepted, it was considered lazy and would drop you a letter grade, now that is the norm and is used on every video out there.
