Remember, 300 games back then were very rare.. They all used a Rubber ball, and played on Mopped lanes... I used to ask my Grandfather why he didnt hook it, and he said that you really couldnt play hook shots back then due to the equipment and lane oil. He said plenty of people tried to play a lot of rotation, it just was not ideal at all though at the time.

Best spare tip I’ve gotten is to go through the same exact pre-shot routine that I do for my strike shot. You might think you are, but you really have to be deliberate about it. Unless you flatten your wrist on spares, the ONLY thing that should change is where you stand and/or where you aim. If you normally wipe your ball, dry your hand, do a little wiggle at the line, think something before your shot, etc., do that for your spare shots. I used to not wipe my spare ball off before throwing it, which cut a couple things out of my routine without me really noticing it. As soon as I corrected that, spares got a heck of a lot easier.

One of my college coaches showed us something similar. Told us we had LITERALLY 1/3 of the lane to cover a single pin spare and 1/4 of the lane to cover a corner. Spares really are 100% mental. If you're anxious (like I get when I bowl) you'll miss em all the time. Could give me half the lane at a single pin and I'd still whiff it if I'm anxious.

Another thing that helped me recently is Mark Baker said there is no need to throw hard and fast at a spare. I know, you see lots of pros do it. But he felt that they already were good at their accuracy after years where less experienced bowlers are not, so rather than take the chance of pulling the ball with muscling it, just throw it a bit slower and relaxed. If I remember to do it, it works. It also allows you to focus n keeping that elbow straight.
@SirJoelsuf14 ай бұрын
Well the reason it appears that pros throw it so hard and fast is because they take nearly ALL of their hand out of the ball when the throw it straight. But otherwise it's exactly like their 1st ball in terms of what their body is doing.

OK OK I know this might be a bit controversial but, if you want to practice or show us a demonstration of spare shooting, you should visit a string pin (yes I said the evil "string" word) their machine software, if operated by knowing bowlers, can reset any pins in any configuration, you can practice for an hour and do nothing except shoot at 7 or 10 pins all day. I know some nicer regular drop pin lanes have this functionality, but to the best of my knowledge every string pin setup can do it. Just food for thought, unless you would not be caught dead in a string pin facility. 😁
@Hibbidyhai4 ай бұрын
You can do that in regular bowling alleys too, if you pay by the hour rather than by the game. There is a mode that lets you set up difficult splits or splits rather than a clean rack.
@mooser63094 ай бұрын
@@Hibbidyhai thanks for the info, but some of the drop pin locations the people working the counter had no idea what I was talking about, on string pins you could do it yourself at the lane terminal. Really surprised these wonderful YT professional bowlers giving tips, would not have them setup the machine for their video then?

I get what you are saying here....but as someone that throws a big hook, I have a huge issue with just laying the ball down to shoot straight shots. I've struggled with it for a long time now and just can't figure out how to take the revs out of the ball.
@notonyourlife79394 ай бұрын
Then stop trying. Most of us have a hard enough time keeping our strike release consistent. Instead of trying to manipulate ingrained muscle memory (and likely screwing up your consistency in the process), just throw shiny plastic at spares with your normal release. They've got no weight block to speak of, so you can wheel on it as much as you want. Assuming that you have at least average ball speed, it's not gonna hook enough to screw you. Look at Belmo and Simo... they both rev the shit out of it shooting at the 10 pin, and despite having some of the highest rev rates in the game, the ball's trajectory is nearly pin- straight because they're throwing plastic 99% of the time.
@randystull15024 ай бұрын
@notonyourlife7939 I've tried that....the damn ball still hooks. Could it just be a speed issue?, like that I just need to throw it harder to make it not hook? I agree on the muscle memory issue, my hand just wants to turn the ball over and I'm also a one hander so I'm just trying to figure out a real solution.
@redacted_true4 ай бұрын
try what I do, go learn backup, I even shoot my 3 pins backup
@notonyourlife79394 ай бұрын
@randystull1502 Well how fast do you throw it? If you're cranking the daylights out of it, but your ball speed is 10 mph and it takes a week to get to the pins, then yes...I can see a plastic ball hooking away from right side spares. But if you're in the 15-18 mph range (off your hand, not what the sensors give you down lane), then I don't think speed is your problem. Spare balls need to have their surface maintained too, just like anything else. Shiny balls don't stay shiny forever.... they get dull. Dull = friction, and friction = hook. Polish it up, regularly. Also plastic is not particularly durable... they get beat up faster than urethane or reactive covers. If it's 20 years old with more dents and dings in it than a '72 Pinto, resurface it or get a new one. I'm good for a new spare ball about once a year, maybe 18 months, tops.
@ripvanrevs4 ай бұрын
@@notonyourlife7939 Dry wood lanes can still be a problem. A very short oil pattern can also be a problem. I went to a 12 lb plastic ball for spares to get more speed (normally 14-15) and it will still hook away from a 10 pin.

I totally understand the sentiment of you all saying, "You have a third of the width of the lane to make any single pin spare except the 7 and 10 pins." However, the math nerd in me disagrees. If you are shooting single pin spares at a 0 degree angle (straight up the boards), meaning your target is the 20 board for the 1 pin, the 15ish board for the 3 or 8 pin, 10ish board for the 6 pin, etc.; then you indeed have about a third of width of the lane to make the each single pin spare with the exception of the 7 and 10. However, if you are shooting any single pin at an angle, you are changing a variable to where you no longer have a third of the width of the lane. You still have basically 2 widths of a bowling ball plus the width of a pin (which I think is the point you all were trying to make). However when you factor in shooting single pin spares at a none 0 degree angle, you no longer have a third of the width of the lane.

I love the videos. Big fan. However, correct factual information is important. Bowling balls are 8.5 inches in diameter. Bowling pins are 4.75 inches in diameter. 2*8.5+4.75= 21.75" versus lane width of 39", therefore you have slightly more than half the lane to hit a single pin spare.
