Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
This is the followup to my series on how to do a frankenstrat paint job with spray cans. In this video I demonstrate how to get a professional looking finish using spray cans. I'm using a catalyzed polyurethane clear coat for this paint job. This is an automotive clear coat, that allows you to get a mirror shine for a clear that looks like glass. This stuff works on guitars, cars, helmets, bikes, etc.
Here is a kit page I set up with most of what you will need if you want to be able to get a beautiful finish with spray cans in either polyurethane or lacquer: kit.com/bradan...
Don't forget to ask your questions in the comment section.

Hey Brad, what would you recommend the best method would be for doing a neck thru guitar. I want to do the body crackle finish, but not the neck as I like it’s finish already. Just tape off at the heel? Thnx!

It's a great finish. I'm one of these guys that has been doing rattle can finishes for decades. I'm living in japan at present and one of those cans is 150 bucks (US). I poop you not! I had to buy a compressor and a gun to use urethane and epoxy finishes on my guitar projects. The funny thing is, the compressor and spray gun cost me less than one can of that finish in Japan.

As i stated before with many questions about finishing (clear coating) a paint job with job and i believe my issues were not using a catalyzed polyurethane. Which I will now use on my one bass guitar i'm currently redoing (painting) i still have lots to learn. but thank you again

I'm very glad to hear that you've found this video helpful. It's certainly possible to get a beautiful finish with other spray cans, but this product is high quality and makes it considerably easier I think. Just make sure you protect yourself; it's more dangerous than your average spray can.

😀 1:11 "One of my hoses are leaking".... 24 seconds later... 1:35 😀 Be careful man! By the way, about the coat. Spray can or not, we can always paint a layer more and wet sand the surface to en even smoother finish. Pretty easy and it makes even better results in the reflection of light on the finish. Great videos buddy! Thanks for sharing them!

Great video, I used this as a reference for clear coating my recent project. Spray technique and spread pattern was easy to see. I used a shimmer metallic Krylon can, which turned out great. Followed up with a cheapo gloss Krylon spray to keep it consistent. Ended up with around 6 coats as I started light and it's not high quality stuff. Looks great and I've just gotta wait for it to dry and get rid of some orange peel

Spray Max 2k lacquer is a good, proper activated finish, goes on well, produces an excellent finish. I've used them to spray plastic car bumpers, no issues, no cracking either, and remains slightly flexible. The best spray can 2k finish I've found. Makes like 'HB 2k' are crap, they aren't a 2k finish from a can, they are a crap 1k, trades description breach. Use a proper respirator/mask, at least a Gerson type disposable. For small jobs I highly recommend Spray Max. Over the years, I've converted to proper compressor and spray gun.

2k Spray Max should only be used if you have supplied air exchange, end of story. The catalyzed lacquers DO NOT contain isocyanates. They do however contain acetone and b-butyl acetate. Both of these are filtered by 3m Organic Vapor cartridges. However 3m clearly states that after using OV filters for an hour with acetone, the filter media becomes "discharged" and then fails to filter, which means it needs to be replaced after an hour of use.

yes, if its a 2 k clear in a can it can put on a 2k finish like a gun... depending on the quality of clear wether in a can or mixed its the same ... difference is you can always spray a better finish if you have a better painter.. yes a better painter could always make a nicer job using better spray gun setup... but for a small job like that anyone can make it look nice... better quality clear could be put in a spray can also... only real difference is limited fan air adjustments..

Can you use this Spraymax on an already gloss finish? I used Rustoleum gloss spray paints. It's dried and glossy, so I'm not sure if I need to scuff before putting down the Spraymax or not. Kinda makes me nervous to scuff before clear coating bc the paint job has a racing stripe. I'm afraid to scuff through the fine lines.

I've had some pretty good success with Dupli-Color perfect match paint and clearcoat. I believe it's a lacquer based paint and clear coat.... the paint dries ridiculously fast and hard as does the clear coat... using this paint and clearcoat I have gone from start to finish in two days and have been very happy with the outcome
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 5 жыл бұрын
It’s acrylic lacquer. Decent paint, but actually takes 6 weeks or so to reach full hardness.

So the professional way, using the sprayer application, is of better quality overall because it is more durable in the long run - ? In general, sprayer vs aerosol can application is better because -- better quality of the "mix" you're able to buy, more even coats, the velocity/"force" of the spray from the sprayer makes a difference --- ?? (Sorry for the noob questions, just trying to understand.) Great video. Glad to know there's a reasonable option for the financially challenged!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. In essence you can buy better (and different viscosities etc.) clear coat for a gun, you can adjust the mix with different thinners based on temperature, and you can adjust the volume you’re putting out at once. More versatility for potentially better (or sometimes worse) results.

I do have one question. Will the spraymax work over top an already existing lacquer clear coat? It's only one layer of clear lacquer. I stripped down an old guitar of mine, and did some artwork on it, and applied one layer of clear lacquer. It looks ok, but when you get close, you can see a slight orange peel effect on it. The clear coat has been on it for a little over a month now.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 7 жыл бұрын
+Jason Bossardt If it's been on there a month and it feels nice and hard, you should be able to go ahead. Sometimes things go wildly wrong when you mix paints, but I've put poly over lacquer like that before and never had a problem.

Do you have a video on how to build that handy holster/stand you are using? Of all the videos I've seen, that setup seems to provide the best access to all areas of the guitar, while holding it firmly in place. I find the hanging guitar body awkward when spraying the horns and sides.

I just finished with 3 coats of clear. I have a little dust and a couple runs, completely my fault, but have a question about removal. I need to add a couple more coats of clear, due to the detail painted being a little raised. Do I do the next coats prior to fixing the runs and removing the dust, or do I fix first? Is scraping with a razor blade how you fix runs?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 2 жыл бұрын
Fix first. I use a combination of razor blade scraping and gentle sanding to deal with those types of things.

You are obviously well trained to do this well done. I see a lot of young guys making the fatal mistake of going in too near and moving their spraying arm back and forwards within a very tight small area and whilst doing so moving their spray gun or can far too fast almost as if they are swiping paint of glass with a razor blade, or trying to eliminate a Wasp, or Bee .
