I think Cruel Summer was that summer when she was ' cancelled' then she started meeting Joe but it was rocky at the start.. It was like ' no strings attached' ( it's cool thats what I tell him, no rules in breakable heaven) kinda relationship she was so unsure if he wants to make it serious but she very much want to. The bridge tells that ' I'm drunk in the back of the car, and I cried like a baby coming home from the bar, said Im fine but it wasnt true , I dont want to keep secrets just to keep you' (seems like the secret is that she Loves him) shes scared that when she told him she loves him, it might scare him off by thinking that 'its getting serious, im outa here'. cause it started as just a 'Fling' But she said it in the end of cruel summer ' ilove you ain't that the worst thjng you've ever heard?, he looks up grinning like the devil' So after she got drunk and told him she loves him, He grinned like a devil. So it kinda shows that he was you know happy about her confession.

soon you'll get better is actually about Taylor's mom, Andrea, she's been diagnosed with cancer and basically taylor wrote this song as an ode to her. n April 2015, Andrea was diagnosed with cancer. Her cancer went into remission, but in Taylor's 2019 Elle US Magazine essay, she revealed that she developed the disease again. it's the saddest song on the album. and death by a thousand cuts was inspired by a movie scene if I'm not wrong.

Death By A Thousand Cuts is inspired by the movie Someone Great. Basically she wants to prove to herself that she can still write breakup songs even if it's not about her own experience and she's at the point in her life that she's happy.

Loved this! I'm so happy that there's someone else who was immediately drawn to London Boy, it and Paper Rings are my go to for wanting to have a dance about. Cruel Summer was about Joe and it kinda does continue from Getaway Car because she met him at the same time she met Tom Hiddleston and was hiding from the press. Which is why they were keeping secrets and sneaking places. Death by a Thousand Cuts was inspired by a movie (I can't remember the name) but funnily enough the director mentioned that she'd been inspired by a line from You Are in Love

Omg Cruel Summer is my fave so here’s what I interpret it as. It’s essential being in a friends with benefits relationship hence all the sneaking around " snuck in through the garden gates " and for "no rules in breakable heaven that what I tell him " basically that's they aren't defining the relationship that could easily break . “ Said im fine but it wasn't true , don't want to keep secrets just to keep you " she realized that she's in love but doesn't want to tell him in case that scares him off . “Devils roll their dice” they are calling betts on her new relationship while the “angels roll their eyes” the angels are like “come on girl a new guy”

I’m sad that you didn’t mention my favorite lyric in daylight. It’s the most stand out lyric in the whole album if you ask me. She says “I used to think love would be burning red, but it’s golden like daylight.” Fun fact* she named her 4th album red because she said red is the color of hearts ♥️ and Valentine’s Day but is also the color of rage, anger, and blood which love can be either or. So she’s saying now that she’s met joe and knows real love, she really didn’t know anything about love until now. And she was going to name this album daylight to be the end of reputations darkness and have a sunrise to new and better things but then she wrote lover as the last track in the middle of the night and thought that title represented the album better

“Cruel Summer” deserved to be a single! Also the fact that it comes after “I Forgot That You Existed” could be a dig at Kanye especially coming off the back of “Reputation” and the controversy linked to it. Additionally “Cruel Summer” is also the title of an earlier Kanye West song.

cruel summer might be talking about a situation where the two people agreed to be friends with benefit and nothing more, but the speaker caught feelings for the other one and was trying to hide it. The prechorus 2 might be about how she expected this to end at some point but decided she would never tell him how much it hurts if it happens. The bridge might be describing how she finally told him how she feels. This song is sooooo good
