Also the movies did Peeta so bad because in the books it is more clear that Peeta is the more charismatic and inflencing than Katniss.Peeta had a natural knack for knowing what to say, when and how to get the public on his side. Peeta never made a mistake and knew exactly how close to the line he can get without crossing it. Peeta was naturally likeable and charismatic. Katniss, on the other hand, was unpredictable and irrational. She frequently did things that backfired on her and then she lashed out. She isn't naturally able to make people like her. She would have made a horrible politician.Interestingly, everyone involved did seem to realize that if they had left behind Katniss, Peeta wouldn't have fought, he would have been broken. It didn't matter how malleable he is. Without Katniss he wouldn't have been useful. Had Katniss actually lost Peeta, she probably could have still been convinced to fight for Prim, for Gale, for her mother. She had others to fight for, Peeta just had Katniss. But in the end, Katniss would have been driven to seek revenge for them leaving Peeta, the "good" in her world.

Very well said. And I think the movies should have found a way around the fact that the books are seen through Katniss' perspective and a lot of things go on inside her mind. She also knew for a fact that Peeta should have been the one saved and it's much more compelling when we have her thoughts on the matter. Her character isn't likable and she knows it, and that eats her up inside bc she really thinks she should never have been the mockingjay. Her whole freenemies with Haimich makes so much more sense when we know what she thinks too. In the movies she just goes from hating him to being civil but no context is really given.

Ehh, I think the books made it clear that Peeta was good at manipulating the people of the Capitol. The people of the districts were more inspired by Katniss though because of her relationship with Rue and her stunt of defiance with the berries. Peeta never shined as a beacon of rebellion to the districts like Katniss did. That’s why Peeta being the Capitol’s spokesperson was so interesting.

I loved Katniss' reaction to it in the books. She suddenly regrets everything she ever thought about him and feels the urge to beg for his forgiveness on her knees. Which makes perfect sense with the whole "Capitol propaganda" theme. All Katniss sees from him are things the Capitol promotes about him. A beautiful, cocky, arrogant winner who gets god knows how many women into his bed. But when you look under the surface and see him for who he really is you see how HORRIBLE his life has been and how he's just another victim of this evil regime.

so many people get angry and annoyed when Katniss is focusing on the Peeta instead of the rebellion, but they always forget that Katniss is just a teenager. She's like 17/18 and has just gone through all of this trauma TWO years in a row, and is automatically thrust into a war, without any time to process what she's been through. And even tho Peeta was forced to say the things he said, a lot of it had truth to it. Her and Peeta weren't aware of the plan during the 3rd Quarter Quell. They were left in the complete dark. She didn't ask to be the face of the rebellion, she didn't ask to be the symbol of hope, she didnt ask to be the Mockingjay, she was just a teenage girl who wanted to go home and be with her family and the people she loves.
@clover2739
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Katniss never wanted this, she was forced against her will and her entire goal for a long time was to have Peeta survive instead of her and then he gets ripped away from her, without realising he has became such a huge support system and comfort to her and knowing that he’s in the worst place he could be and would be getting tortured because of her is something most people couldn’t deal with. Katniss is such a teenager and this is not a bad thing, where she always mainly cares about the people close to her and that’s her goal to protect. Having her be forced to perform for a rebellion against her will when the person who she was trying to protect for so long is taken is a lot to ask for, especially since Katniss is severely traumatised, like she was fully planning on killing Peeta with a syringe before she realised what was happening when she thought both of them were captured and getting taken to the capitol

@@aaliyahbrown5739 I’m guessing you didn’t read the book? But yes, I am talking about that. Katniss didn’t know peeta wasn’t there, that’s why she reacted that big when they told her peeta was taken by the capitol. Katniss had no reason to know peeta wasn’t there yet. Katniss whole plan when she grabbed the syringe was because she thought both her and Peeta, along with the other victors were captured by the capitol and she grabbed it and went to find where peeta is so she could kill him with it, cause she was that unhinged that she thought that was better for him. Since she promised to protect him then the only way to protect him now was to kill him before the capitol could get to him and torture him. Then she was going to go back and kill beetee, cause peeta was the priority and she wanted to make sure he was first. She wasn’t expecting to see Haymitch at all. It’s just not as clear in the movie because we can’t see inside Katniss head, but that’s why she grabbed the syringe. It was purely to kill peeta.

In the books Gale changed so much after Capitol bombed District 12 to rubbel...he grew angry, cold and bitter and not even Katniss could comfort him, thats why he kept pushing her away...also his sole motivation after that was revenge..he was a brilliant stratregist in the books and his skill made him quickly jump the ranks of the rebellion but what Katniss was horrified about was how brutal Gale's traps were..Gale had no qualms about collateral damage and he said if innocent civilians died while taking the Capitol's forces, he wouldnt regret it and Katniss was very opposed to that..Gale became what he hated, he became what Capitol was, using any means necessary to win and not feeling regret over it..movies kind of butchered that whole character development and instead put more focus on the love triangle

He's been mentioned to be able to carry multiple large sacks of flour for their family's bakery, and I think he was able to carry and throw really heavy weights in the books as well. I dont think its just cause its Peeta. Gale is kind of brutal in the last 2 movies and full of rage and his only cause seems to be to keep the rebellion going. In his mind supporting the rebellion wouldve been worth even having his family killed and district being bombed. He seems to have a very colateral damage mentality. Also living in a very corrupt country, its supper common for people to say "I would never" when people do things, conceide things or "support" the government because their family has been threatened. In terms of Gale - he can say things that can be true (I personally think they aren’t necessarily true) but still just awful. Him trying to tell Katniss “Oh you’d only like me if I was suffering.” Is not only extremely offensive to what Peeta is going through and almost downplaying it as if Peeta is being tortured willingly to get her love and affection, but it’s also so fucking unfair to say to Katniss considering she is literally busy leading a revolution and here comes Gale trying to make her feel guilty for showing empathy for her friend all because HE’S jealous and pouty about it. Mind you, when Peeta realized Katniss probably didn’t like him the same he did her, he told her it was okay. He agreed to be her friend and never said anything bad about Gale. Ever.

The shot with the hospital bombing was super-confusing. She didn't knock the planes into the hospital; they were coming back from bombing it when Katniss shot them. But the movie is really weird in its angles, and the reaction shot looked like she was horrified at herself. But... yeah. Very weird. Peeta was done badly in the movie. He was definitely Katniss's equal in the books, with his own arc. And they skipped a MAJOR issue with Gale (as far as I can tell, to try and make the love triangle more plausible)--toward the beginning, they discovered Katniss's prep team chained to the wall in D13 (in the book, it was they, not Effie, who had been kidnapped to 13; she was in prison in the Capitol), and Gale couldn't understand how Katniss could possibly be horrified at their treatment; after all, they were just Capitol lackeys who worked for the Games. When Katniss tried to explain that they were harmless and had shown her kindness, he treated her like she was insane. This was a huge problem, because it plays into all of Katniss's actions. Which still occurred, but made less sense in the movie.

The Peeta hostage situation is a scarily real practice in many authoritarian countries. In Belarus during the national uprisings the main editor of anti-establishment newspaper Nexta was captured while trying to leave the country, tortured and then forced to be the talking head for the propaganda machine. He was even forced to marry some random girl to "cut ties" with his former girlfriend with whom they worked together and who was also captured by the authorities. People like that are broken down and remain hostages for... well, sometimes for life. On a separate note, I do actually like how Gale's character was handled in this movie. As if she had to explain her best friend why she kissed someone else while she was trying to survive. Obviously Katnis keeps kissing him and leading him on, but as a woman I see that and just feel pitty because I know how it feels to have to show feelings for a man in order to be valued or to keep them in my life. Gale was her best friend, they survived together and helped each other keep their families alive since they were kids. She just doesn't want to loose him and he's just in love and doesn't want to accept that she doesn't love him like that. Gale literally even says before ‘maybe he was forced and saying it to protect you’ and then suddenly does a 180 the next time when he could clearly see something wrong with peeta? It was just stupid

To be fair, not really surprising that Gale couldn't feel empathy for Peeta, he can barely feel any for Katniss either. When she comes back from her first games, having killed people, buried Rue (into whom she projected her feelings for Prim), lied to a boy who trusted her and who ends up being severly wounded in the process (in the books at least), all Gale thinks about is how Katniss kissed Peeta and she didn't seem to act at this time and blah blah blah let me be jealous because Katniss *dares* caring about the other boy she shares trauma and an emotional bond with... Ugh. At least, even when he feels betrayed about her having lied to him about her feelings in the Arena, Peeta never blames Katniss for actually caring about other people than him... 🙄

I love the movies and how them captured a lot of things explained in the books, but they didnt do great when it comes to portraying characters and how deep and complex they are and their role in the story. The perfect example is finnick, the books talk about his trauma with prostitution and how he was forced to it, while in the movies it is never explained or at least not as good as in the books. Peeta is another example, the movies dont show the importance of his role in the war and inside the capitol, and they dont show how bad his trauma, ptsd and torture was.

Book Gale was really awful tbh. The movies didnt highlight it much. There's a point in the book where they have Peeta back and he's been tortured so much in the Capitol and Gale looks at him and tells Katniss "I can't compete with that." LIke DUDE...DUDEEE read the room. ohmygod Peeta was tortured and you're thinking about your love life I can't. Book Johanna as well went through hell, she was like made to always drown and then they electrocute the water while she was in it. So whenever it rained Johanna would have panic attacks. She explained that she's cellmates with Peeta so they know each other's scream well. sigh. these two huhu. Also book Boggs was my favorite.

I will only share something about Gale... in the books he was f boy that had several "girlfriends". He only realized his true feelings for Katniss when she was on the games. He didn't even say something when he said goodbye to katniss before the games. He had the classic now that I saw you with another man I realized that I loved you... boy... bye 🙄 (he probably didn't want to ruin their friendship because they needed each other to survive... But like... I'm about to be killed and you don't tell me your true feelings... sure).

While Gale is more obvious a match for Katniss, I think Peeta has a pure feeling towards her. He never expected anything from her, just that she survives and could exist without the pressure of being the center of attention. Peeta saw how she had to be a mother even to her mother, even when starving thinking about her mother and sister. Peeta admires Katniss and wants her to be happy for how much she had to sacrifice of herself. Also something important is, Gales actions and responsability in some events in Part II really did made impossible for Katniss to love him. Waiting for your reaction on the last part!

Taking into consideration what Gale is up until this point excluding part 2, I can understand the mixed feelings towards him. He has had Katniss’s back and has been a decent friend of hers. He’s seen as the more righteous one which is why he took the beating back at 12 and why he managed to save the 915 people from the bombings. Yet, being righteous is what makes him a difficult person to fully like because he holds himself to a higher standard and expects everyone else to be the same. It’s easy for him to say he would never call for a cease-fire when he is not being held hostage. Although Peeta was being tortured, he managed to warn 13 of the bombings, when considering he was being hijacked that must’ve been extremely hard to do. It’s also mentioned in the book that right after he warned 13, Snow walked up to him and beat him bloody to the point that his blood splattered on the tile floor. Overall, their characters were made to cause a bit of conflict within the viewer.

In the books (especially) and movies, gale is a fantastic strategic soldier but proves he isn’t lover material. He was fine with other human lives being killed if it meant their side winning. Peeta shows true strength to come out the other side of what he went through and still not choose violence or revenge ❤ It’s not a love ‘V’ if it becomes very clear that one lad was right for our girl, or none at all. I love watching how a strong female lead should be written, I love all the trauma, flaws, bad-assery, recovery and emotion, and the love interest being entirely optional and her own choice. Even if it leads to more pain.

One thing about Gale is that him being whipped for saving people wasn't in the books. He was whipped for carrying a turkey he illegally hunted. Which, whipping is a massive overreaction to that, but it's nowhere near as heroic of an action that he was doing. They had to play him up so that he could actually be likable in order to sell the love triangle

Peeta is what Katniss needs after all the trauma she went through. She said so herself in the books, that she had enough fire and rage herself and didn't need Gale's rage too. Also Gale was never gonna stop being angry, his element was war. Katniss just wanted to move on and Peeta made that possible. He didn't care about revenge and hurting people, his things were always art, living a peaceful life and being the empathetic one. Basically he represents life, while Gale represents ongoing war for her. Also let's be real Gale is incredibly toxic to always come to her crying lOve mE LoVe mE do yOu lOvE me NoW? oH yOu aRe trAumAtiZed? wHaTEveR LovE mE nOw?!

To make a long story short, we hate gale cuz he’s a pick me boy and war criminal. Also he’s so judgmental about Peeta and his actions in this movie even though it’s clear he’s being tortured within an inch of his life. Like Gale knows what the capital is capable of yet is still acting like Peeta is a “coward”. Along with all the physical torture, the capital is also probably telling him so many lies. They could be telling Peeta that they have his family in custody and that they’d kill them if he doesn’t do what they say. And then we find out they were literally brain washing him. So clearly we have no clue as to what they were doing to Peeta or what they’re capable of. Yet Gale had the audacity to act like no matter what they did, said, or threatened him with he’d “never” say what Peeta did.

What is going on! Loved your reaction! This movie was so emotional, I literally got chills when Katniss said her message to Snow" Fire is Catching, and if We burn You Burn With Us", so goood! I feel so bad for Peeta, he got captured, tortured, his family was killed, and he lost his identity which is what he said he didn't want in the first movie. He didn't want the games to turn him into something he's not, and that's exactly what happened to him. He really has it the worse. Gale saying that he would never say what Peeta said is so insensitive, especially not knowing everything they were doing to him or threatening him with. Can't wait for the second part! So excited to see the Maze Runner movies, please react to all of them. I really like the first and the last movie.

I always see people in the replies comparing these movies to the books and saying they don’t do justice to the story, but I completely disagree. I just recently started reading the books and I’ve been extremely pleasantly surprised with how the adaptations line up. (I haven’t finished the last book so I can’t speak to that just yet, but so far it’s been almost entirely spot on.) Something I hadn’t expected was that the books are written in 1st POV, Katniss’s perspective. I love that style and yet, so many (too many) books, especially YA and sci-fi/dystopian novels are written from a birds eye view. Anyway, because it’s Katniss’s narration, you get to understand exactly how she’s thinking and feeling about specific situations and events. But 1st person stories are very hard to adapt visually. If you’ve ever taken a writing course, there’s a rule called “show, don’t tell.” Telling your audience what is happening, unless it contextually makes sense like through the thoughts of your main character, is lazy and dumbs down the storytelling. You have to use setting and context clues and dialogue that makes sense, to Show what’s going on and let your audience realize on their own what’s happening. So of course you’ll lose some level of detail when adapting this type of story, but I think the directors have done a fantastic job with the visual storytelling that it makes up for the change in perspective. They still hit all the important beats in the story, and you even get some new perspectives in the movies that wouldn’t be possible in the books. I have been super impressed with this adaptation- it’s very clear a lot of love and respect for the source material went into its production.

Also I feel like the Gale hate is only valid after you’ve seen the last movie. He’s kind of irredeemable then. But before that, I actually like him. Yeah, his behavior when it comes to the love triangle stuff is annoying and kind of childish, but he’s also a super smart guy. I mean, he had it right about the Capitol the whole time. He had all these revolutionary ideas from the very beginning of the first book. He’s a super family oriented dude, he had his mother and younger siblings that he looked after just like Katniss, and he wanted kids of his own, and to raise them in a better world. He cares about his community and he saved so many people from district 12. You’ll see in the final movie what goes down, but it’s really not good. And I don’t remember if he fully knew what was going to happen and did it anyway, or if he was just ignorant to the situation. I think he so badly wanted things to change, and to make the capitol suffer just as he did. It wasn’t just the victors who had trauma from the games, everyone in the districts experienced the Capitol’s oppression. His rage was stronger than his humanity. I think his actions were inexcusably awful, but his motivations were understandable.
@changingmind2522
@changingmind2522 Жыл бұрын
I agree with all of this. These are amazing adaptations and because the movies are in 3rd person rather than 1st, Jennifer Lawrence had to do hard work making sure those emotions could be shown and conveyed without having to tell us what she’s feeling (which she did an outstanding job with). I also agree that the Gale hate is unwarranted if you haven’t seen the end. You can dislike him for some of his actions, but it’s also important to remember he’s going through a lot of trauma too. It’s not on the same level as Katniss and Peeta, but it’s not about competition either. Everyone has their own valid emotions and I think it’s important that his are taken into account. Again, it’s not to say I agree with him, but to understand where he’s coming from.
