Had the misfortune of having to drive through Bradford a couple of weeks ago. The standard of driving was actually disgusting. Followed a Toyota Prius quite literally fully loaded, two kids on the passenger seat, drivers wife sat in the back holding a very small baby and another three kids next to her, one of which was standing up looking out of the back window. Didn't have to witness it for too long to be fair, it drove through a red light and nearly got side swiped by a speeding Golf R. To further add to the misfortune I had to pay £9 because of the Clean Air Zone!

It’s ridiculous in Bradford, even worse since the disruption caused by city of culture awarded. I’ve just had to pay £200 fine for my husband who drove through clean air zone. I deal with all of our post but due to serious illness I became overwhelmed with things and somehow this mail became mixed up with other things . The annoying thing is my husband was knocked down in a hit and run last summer and was badly injured…. Nothing was done about this though!

Ben, I went to Lahore in Pakistan last year and witnessed the driving there. Chaotic is an understatement. Lanes are ignored, motor bikes carry up to six people and then you've got tuk tuks, overloaded trucks and the odd donkey and cart. So, I think the way people drive in places like Bradford, Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley is definitely a cultural thing. Hope you're enjoying your retirement!

I think your spot on here Jane. Never been to my country but would assume those migrating to this country bring over their bad driving standards. Where I live we're seeing more of a particular eastern european migrants coming over and although some cant drive with no consideration or respect they have little to no respect or consideration to people. Its like or is that theres no manners where they came from. Should see the driving standards too in East London. Have family around there and dread driving down there. See young guys driving recklessly in high performance cars which makes me wonder how a wit like them afforded it unless its ill gotten gains or a friend or relatives car. One good thing is the met police have a online form to reporting bad drivers. Have had quite a few reports getting action taken on especially bad drivers I reported in East London.

@@DC3RefomBut then there’s the issue of people getting someone else to take the test for them and, within certain communities, that’s a huge problem. A few years ago a man of a certain ethnicity was caught trying to take a driving test for another man. The Driving Examiner who should have been conducting the test had called in sick and another Examiner was allocated. The second Examiner called the police when he saw the candidate, as the same man had sat (and passed) the same test the day before at a different Examination Centre, using a different name. When the police raided his property, they found a spreadsheet on his computer, with a list of names, addresses and the Examination Centre their test was being held at. He had the spreadsheet split into months and years - so he’d been doing this for a while. He was charging £500 per test and, so far in the year he was arrested, had sat over 500 tests - for him it was a business.

I fit high value vehicle trackers in Bradford and it still amazes me when you have a sub £300,000 car in the run down areas of Bradford. BD3 and BD8 are a favourite. The price of insurance is extortionate in the BD postcodes. But its keeping me busy with the black box fitting as well😂

So i always feared i`d return to my car either smashed up (and no way of claiming on anothers insurance!) or just an empty parking bay with my poor car being thrashed and trashed round some housing estate by some Muppet joyrider! i live in Bradford. Driving here is the worst I have ever seen. Red lights are ignored, people ignore queues at lights and drive against oncoming traffic and get to the lights on the wrong side of the road and just cut through. Yellow boxes? Ignored. Double parking to get into a shop, happens all down the street. Police? Drive past and just ignore it. Is it because over 80% of the drivers and 100% of the bad drivers appear to be a different ethnicity and the police are afraid to do something? It scares me.

And he told me his driving instructor told him to drive on the wrong side of the road to pass parked cars. 😒😒😒😒 Why is the Institute of Advanced Motoring test not the standard for everyone? I know some Scandinavian countries have tests that require you to be able to handle a skid and control a drift, high speed slaloms and all kinds of advanced driving manoeuvres. I wish this was the case in the U.K. if everyone had a free retest so many would fail.

Standard of driving in Bradford is nothing short of shocking, u think you've seen it all, until u go out the day after and see something else! For the ones who do pass a test successfully, its easy, u learn for approx 40 hours, show a random examiner what they need to see for 40 minutes, then ur free as a bird. They pass and its like one big race track. I do think it could be considered that new drivers have to be tested again within the first year of driving....? For ones who dont pass a test successfully, thats exactly it, they just don't bother. No license, no insurance, but I'll drive anyway. Lose lose situation. Will never improve. Bradford is Bradford and forever will be this way unfortunately. I dont test at the Bradford test centres anymore, just not worth the hassle of being in the area

the main issue in bradford now is the lack of police. This isnt just specific to bradford but you very rarely see a normal police car never mind a traffic one. The only time you see traffic cars these days are at car meets when you know they have better things to do and dont want to be there. Govt policing these days is do whatever is easiest with the least effort, they dont want to employ officers to go out and chase bad drivers, they want a camera set up to catch speeding offences. The other issue is in Bradford is because of the lack of police 90% of the drivers dont even have a license, all have dodgy insurance so there cars show up as insured and because they very rarely ever see an officer where is the risk?

@BenPearson It funny how you mention it. I find it completely wrong! When I did my Motorcycle test back in 2010, There are 4 tests to do and 1 training, plus the expenses for training for the other 2 that comes with the test. Pass mark: no more than 7 minus out of 20. (I had 3) I was only 19 years of age then. They have made the Motorcycle test even harder today(2023) by putting the age limit for an A* Licence to 24 years of age with a restrictions on anything over 599cc+. But a 17 year old driver can just pass his/her test and jump into daddies powerful lamborghini and go 100mph+ and crash into a crowded public area. There is no restrictions like they have on a motorcycle. It completely WRONG! They need to change this before the insurance for an years of experience on the road adults who drive their way to work all the time will go up and through the roof of more than they ever paid in their life.

The standard has fallen generally I think. Over in East Yorkshire, the danger I witness daily is young drivers motoring along, two inches from the rear bumper of the car in front of them. It's constant and with total disregard for stopping distances. I drop to 10 mph below whatever the speed limit is and sit at that speed. Most drivers still don't get it when I do that. As for Bradford. I only have the misfortune to go there with work and it's treated like an SAS mission. Always with a full tank of fuel. In/ out and without stopping. Not to fuel up, not for a coffee, to urinate. Nothing. In/ out and done. It's a unique place is Bradford.

Ben I always presumed West Yorkshire traffic coppers would patrol look after anywhere depending on the day, say Monday Leeds - Wakefield area Tuesday Bradford - Keighley Wednesday Halifax- Keighley, Thursday anywhere on M1-M62. West Yorkshire parts. etc etc so you just patrolled Bradford no where else. Think the last time I went to anywhere near Bradford was the Airport and I would class Yeadon more like Leeds area than anywhere near Bradford.
@BenPearson1965

I patrolled all of West Yorkshire, my main area was Bradford, Airedale and Keighley. But yes Monday could be Halifax, Tuesday Huddersfield and Wednesday the motorway. However you always got pulled back to Bradford for a pursuit. So 19 years around all of West Yorkshire car, motorcycle or riot duties.

@@PibrochPonder You talk about 'some of the non indigenous population', since it's many centuries from when before the first people from outside of Britain made their way here, none of us are as indigenous as the Picts many centuries ago, or the Celts in Wales (thought by many to be some of the last truly indigenous people these isles, as they were pushed and kept westwards by population movement from outside of Britain), and the English man Winston Churchill spoke of us being 'a mongrel race', which means that, when you throw in a sarcastic use of 'cultural enrichment' - the term 'dog whistle racism' is an excellent fit, since you are subtly implying that anything (or anybody) which is of a different culture to Britain's, is both negative and non indigenous, when we haven't had an indigenous population for a very very long time, as noted by Winston Churchill, coincidentally enough the leader whom so many racists like to reference. You'll have head the term 'Roman nose' (commonly seen in your fellow 'indigenous' Brits) before, that originally came from the region of Italy with the Romans, many centuries ago. So, how 'indigenous' are you, have you traced your ancestry back to the Celts, or to the Picts?
