Been carrying a Bradford Guardian 3 in the horizontal leather sheath for a tad over a month now & it will stay on my belt for a long time to come. The sheath is very concealable since I don't tuck any shirt in. It is just so much stronger. I still carry a pocket clip folder too, & my Baby Buck 55 pocket knife never leaves my pocket. One is none, two is one & three is smart.

Jason, have you looked at the Esee JG3 much? Very similar shape and same length blade in 1095. I have no doubt the Bradford is built better being more custom rather than production. Just seeing if you’ve paid much attention to the Esee?
@tradbowpodcast
@tradbowpodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Love esee knives. Have about 9 of them and love everyone. Have not used the jg yet as I have so many knives similar to it. This bradford is smaller and more pocket friendly. Thats the reason I originally bought the bradford was there is no other knife like it with the small over all length and perfect sized blade. You get a lot of blade for a very compact knife. But make no mistake, I love my esee knives and if I was going on a fly in remote trip or anything remote and away from my vehicle for extended time it would be an esee with me. Probably the 4 or the 6 and an izula in my pocket.

Quick question.. what are the negatives of m390
@tradbowpodcast
@tradbowpodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Not many negs. M390 is a fantastic steel. It holds an edge great is not to bad to sharpen and its a fairly strong steel as far as durability. Its perfect for a knife of this size. In bigger more hard use knives it could snap if being used too hard, but in this size its definitely strong enough. It has very good corrosion resistance. Only real downfall is it takes longer to sharpen then it does to dull it. But it does hold an edge longer that other steels. That's always the trick balance for people that use knives alot. If it golds an edge long it takes long to re sharpen. If it sharpens easy it dulls faster. If you are someone that doesn't use a knife often or can always sharpen it at hole on a belt sander or fast sharpening system then its a great steel. If you ate some one that uses a knife daily and often sharpening is done in the field or in camp a easier sharpening steel might be better. Its all a balancing act. 390 does exactly what its designed to and does it perfectly. Just need to know if thst is what you need. There is no perfect knife steel. You want to find the one that best meets your requirements.

I'm currently carrying a Izula II and if I ever want to go up in blade size I will probably go with the Bradford Guardian 3. I've been eyeballing them hard and found your video searching for more info on them. Thanks for the education on the steel differences as I'm not that knowledgeable beyond 1095. I'm currently looking for something smaller that can be scout carried in the front and leaning toward the LT Wright Patriot. Do you have any experience or thoughts on the Patriot? Or any other comparable sized US made knives? This will be a hard use EDC but not my primary outdoor/hunting knife. I'm a fan of ESEE but the two inch blade on the Candiru is just too small for EDC for me. Two and half is my minimum. Thanks.

@tradbowpodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Lots of great knives out there! But I think the small handle and bigger blad of the bradford makes it one of the smallest carrying knives in its blade size. It's basically the size of the izula. Should definitely be on your list to check out for scout carry!

I just retired my Izula in S35vn for a Bradford g3 in m390. Night and day difference. I replaced my ESEE 4 in S35vn for a Bradford G4 in MagnaCut. The Bradfords have far better heat treats. I realized ESEE heat treats seams to really suck. I bought to KA-Bar Boss and Big Boss in S35vn and they are light years ahead of Esee. I’m quite shocked at how poor both of my ESEE knifes heat treat is. Both dull in the blink of an eye but both of my ka-bar s35vn knives hold there edge FOREVER.

@operatorfpv7277
@operatorfpv7277 3 жыл бұрын
This! I would like to see how both steels hold up to abuse that would normally bend or break your 1095 blades. Me personally, the m390 would likely be enough, but if the 3v is that much tougher, I wouldn't mind being able to throw it/stab it into a log and not worry about damage. I'm leaning toward this over the tops cut 4.0, but I love both designs.
@tradbowpodcast
@tradbowpodcast 3 жыл бұрын
@@operatorfpv7277 in this size knife 390, 3v, etc all work fantastic. But personally I think in a bigger hars use knife I'm still going 1095. It's predictable solid and doesn't break often. Have you tried CPM-3V? A friend of mine was a huge 1095 fan for his hunting and bush crafting knives but he said a properly done 3V matches or exceeds the 1095 in every metric besides being a bit more difficult to sharpen in the field but with a good diamond field sharpener he said he has only had to touch them up on long trips where he has really beat the hell out of it. Curious to hear your thoughts from that perspective, everyone has different uses and opinions on things so steel choice is (as you kinda touched on) very much a personal preference.

Just a question, any particular reason you don’t like S30V steel? And what about the 1095 do you like? I just don’t know much about both those steels.
@tradbowpodcast
@tradbowpodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I have broke a blade in s30v and its also a steel that I struggle to get sharp and it doesn't stay sharp any longer than m390, or other steels i can sharpen very quick and hold edges just as good. The 1095 if heat treated by esee, tops, or travis styles holds an edge very well, sharpens so fast is almost to easy and is very break resistant and almost impossible to chip or damage. For me 1095 is predictable. Meaning I know what it can take and what abuse it will handle and I can sharpen it very fast so I'm not afraid to cut crap I should not be cutting as i can put the edge back in seconds. Now this new cpm3v is very similar to 1095 just better in most categories so its like a 1095 on steroids. But cpm3v is new for me and not yet proven like 1095 is. But I jave high hopes for it.

@@tradbowpodcast so if you were to build just one guardian 3 from their website and have only one, what blade steel, fastener type, blade finish, handle, and blade grind would you chose? @@carlostovar8585 yep the 390 is very hard and holds an edge well. But it's too hard to sharpen in the field fast and I don't trust it for hard use like I do 1095. 1095 is super durable, reliable and predictable and sharpens very fast, even though it doesn't hold an edge as long. I'm not saying 390 is bad. Especially on a knife this size it's property perfect. And I do love it. But in thw woods for hard use or often use I'm taking 1095 personally because I love it so much.

The 3v is my favorite version. I carry thr 3v in the woods everytime I go. Holds an edge well, Re sharpens very fast and is very durable. The 390 version is my everyday carry and used in urban environments as a glorified box cutter.

For some reason I struggle to sharpen it fast and it doesn't really gold an edge longer than other steels i can sharpen faster. It's just a steel thst doesn't agree with me. Bit it is an amazing steel and many many people love it. It just doesn't agree with me as much as other steels do.

I thought I was the only one who isn’t a fan of S30v. I have a Benchmade 940 in S30v. It is a fantastic knife. I love everything about it, except when it’s time to sharpen it. It’s just like you said, s30v takes much longer to sharpen, but doesn’t hold the edge much longer. I also have a mini griptilian in 154cm, and that’s way easier to sharpen. Unfortunately, years of steel snobs have created a market that allowed benchmade and many other companies to offer only premium steels, and now they can charge more money. The griptilian “base model” now comes in s30v, which means that they cost $10-15 more than they used to, and if you want a steel other than S30v, you have to pay even more to “upgrade.” Its bullshit.

@@suitedandbooted6612 S30V is more suited to the average user willing to maintain a good knife. Also, there are four reasonably likely possibilities that could explain the perceived lack of edge retention. You may not be sharpening correctly, you damage the edge by doing things that would affect other steels differently, you got one with a bad heat treat, or you simply may have a negative bias and thus have a negative placebo effect. My guess is that you aren't sharpening the steel correctly.

@@tradbowpodcast I just got it a week ago in s35vn, but probably not much difference. I really like the deep choir for protecting my finger while processing in the dark.
