Bradford (pit) Colliery 1797-1968
Now Eastlands home of the Etihad stadium MCFC.
Supplied coal direct to Bradford iron works and a 420m tunnel was dug enabling a direct supply to Stuart Street Power Station.
Though sat on vast reserves of premium coal it was shut as uneconomical.

I remember going to Bradford Colliery in 1970 when I was a craft apprentice. We collected some equipment from there .I was still at the NCB training centre then at Old Boston ,Haydock..I couldn't get over how close it was to the houses ..I'm sitting here in Australia and was thinking about the pits I'd been too. So I punch in Bradford Colliery on you tube and I was surprised it came up..I was deeply saddened to see all the British pits closed , yet here in Australia they mine millions of tons of coal every year and new mines are being constructed. Coal is king hear . Wish it was still king in UK..

I think Bradford pit was further along on the opposite side, the gas works was where City’s ground now stands. I know because I went to Openshaw Tech high school and the 53 bus passed both these places. The gas works was amazing, from the top deck it looked like a tiny city laid out with roads etc. I think some scenes from the film “The Family Way” with Hywell Bennett and John Mills were filmed in the gas works.

What was there just before they built the stadium? I remember late 90s being on the top deck of the bus going towards Ashton and there were black boarded walls up along there, so high couldn't see over it even on the top deck..

My husband was born on Siam Street near by and he remembers this colliery from his childhood and it being demolished. There was also a steel works near by and the big gas cylinders facing Philips Park, one of them was built by German prisoners of war. There was also a tunnel that went from Clayton Church right under Ashton Road all the way to the old roadhouse in Ancoats, sadly the roundhouse demolished many years ago.

Enjoy watching this..each picture tell a story....I lived close to here growing up in the 1960.....good and bad about the way of life...my dad was a postman driver....so didn't know much about the hard lives of miners,......the only thing I know about coal was it came out of he ground, you bought it from the coal man...it came in sacks and we burnt it on our fire to keep warm.....it was later in life I learnt more about the history of the coal miningand miners lives.......even though my school was close by ....Grange Street nothing was ever taught to us at school...

Just amazing. My brain can't quite accept that places like this actually existed. Been working over at the Velopark for the past few weeks, what a boring, soulless place it is

That’s true but coal can be mined by machines now, and it would save us buying coal produced energy from the Dutch.

Those hard working men and pit ponies must be turning in their graves that this area is home to Ciddy and their 115 FA charges.
