The New Bohemians were a band in Dallas, Texas that played small clubs and bars. At some point, Edie began sitting in with the band and singing, and it's at that point that they were "discovered." The record label wanted to sign Edie as a solo act, but as per the old saying that you "dance with the one that brung ya," she insisted that it was all of them or nothing. Her meeting and marrying Paul Simon came later.

I always read this song as, "I drift through life without a lot of complexity and what you see is what you get." Philosophy, I get from the top of a cereal box. Religion, is like a smile on a dog. - A simple girl who takes things at face value and is happy not to dig much deeper than that. Not sure if that is a positive or negative message, but it's kind of a "well, this is who I am, so..." song. It has a light-hearted vibe and bangin' melody. That's good enough for me. :)

Hours and hours after watching this reaction, that song is not only still playing in my head but it is also still working that weird nostalgia, time-machine stuff. No other song y’all have reacted to has so thoroughly taken me straight back to my childhood-A bee-line to listening to the radio, NOT MTV or a film or Muzak in a store or anything else, but specifically to the radio, (and specifically to the car radio.) I think the only other songs that have had a similar affect on me are Better Than Ezra’s “Desperately Wanting,” Paula Cole’s “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?,” and Shaun Colvin’s “Sunny Came Home.” BTW, check out “32 Flavors” by Ani Difranco.

She has a very charming voice in singing, and in speaking, and her smile. When she first broke out, she was on David Letterman, performing live, back in the day, with her band (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians) and interview. You could tell Dave liked them, and her. She was very cool, natural, laid back, nice, and with a big smile. (The effect on the guitar here is heavy wah-wah pedal) the 'quacky' sound (( You 'really should hear their version of ((Bob Dylan's - 'It's A Hard Rain Gonna Fall' 🎶)) i think most people would agree she does that song better than anyone, she kills it! It's in the movie soundtrack for 'Born on the Fourth of July' (A movie starring Tom Cruise, about a guy who enlists to fight in Vietnam, cuz he's all patriotic, and gung ho. He ends up getting injured, and well, .. (It's a good movie) no spoiler here. But check out her rendition of that song, it's pretty damn impressive.

I always took the "choke me in shallow water before I get too deep" as meaning she preferred to be carefree and not dwell too deeply into something. Sort of like she takes things at face value and doesn't worry about what may or may not be deeper implications. That's who she is and questions are you who you are or trying to be something deeper and therefore not yourself but something else. She isn't trying to be fake and wonders if you (the person she's talking to in the song) are pretending to be something you're not. Back then, and it's true today, too many people tried to portray themselves as something they aren't deep down.

I think I first heard this song when it came out on the new Windows 3.0 operating system, it was embedded into the software, and you could listen to the song using the onboard music player, it was around 1990.

Great song. Their only song, really. There's a fun little interview they did on MTV's 120 Minutes where you get to know Edie really well and she tells a funny story about growing up in Texas bowling alleys. Love this song.

Oh yeah, I also wanted to say that along with the mixture of voices that Lex mentioned, I would also throw in shades of the Canadian singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. Chuck E's In Love is probably her biggest hit.

For me the most important thing in a song is the melody. Like for food, it's the taste. It can be Indian, Chinese, whatever and have any ingredients but does it taste good? This song tastes good

This entire album "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" is phenomenal. No skippers for me - just put it on and let it play through. As a young metalhead in high school this album was one of my guilty pleasures that I secretly loved. I think - actually I'm certain - that Brad would love this album. Her overlooked follow-up album "Ghost of a Dog" is also pretty damn great in its own right.

I wish you could've reacted to the official video,, Edie Brickell and the new bohemians were amazing,, in fact the reason this song in particular resonates with Lexi is she belongs to the 70's .. I love watching the both of you together, you are magical and beautiful..there's another song by Edie you should check out He Said...this music in particular was just so out of this world,, perhaps because the artist were all high..lol

I still listen to this song at least once a week, even after all these years. I've raised my children to always be who they are, and to understand that there will always be more to learn in this life - it's that which keeps life interesting! That's what this song reminds me of, personally (obviously others may, and probably do, have a different take on it.) Anywhooz, it's great for a sing-along with the fam lol!
