All 5 members of Fleetwood Mac were getting divorced during the making of this album and it almost didn't get made. Mic Fleetwood was also getting divorced from his wife during this time, well as the McPhees and Stevie and Lindsay. Rumors is an awesome album of what it's like to break up with your significant other. The album came out I believe in 1977. The chains is each couple's marriage, the running in the shadows is the affairs that each member had during that 2 year span of the previous tour and the making of the album.

This was their commitment song as a band. They had two volitile relationships within the band and if any of them broke up, which they did often, they had to commit to not breaking up with the band. There was intense drama coming from that band since they ALL wrote songs and they'd write spite songs about each other that they all had to sing. That emotion was all real. Any chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Don't break the chain. No one can be weak. No one can quit the band. That's what it meant.

Artists don't seem to take risks anymore. They used to experiment and try different things. If a song was a failure and nobody bought it then they would try a different idea. These days they don't seem to take risks and don't try new things. They have a formula that works so they release the same stuff over and over and over again. I don't know if it's the record labels pressuring them to make risk-free guaranteed hits or if it's the artists getting lazy? Electronic sounds don't help. Some artists have never even seen a real instrument before. In the old days, a drummer, guitarist, and other musicians tried different things and let the music take them somewhere. They played from the soul. How can an electronic instrument on a computer let an artist play from the soul?

Lex feeds off Brad? Brad is in a constant state of confusion and looking to put songs in boxes. Lex is the complete opposite and feels the music in her soul. Lindsay Buckingham is an amazing guitarist, one of the best in rock history. Very unique style which accounts for the "banjo" sound you were describing, he plays without a pick using his fingers. Banjos are played in a similar fashion. Mr. Buckingham is the man who inspired me to pick up a guitar way back in the day and study music as my major in college. :-)

banjo players have picks on their fingers. "Clawhammer" is a style of play, generally on a 6 string, that is prevalent in Bluegrass and other music from the Southern US that doesn't use finger picks. Steve Martin plays in this style.

The reason it sounds similar to a banjo is less about Lindsay playing with his fingers, and more that he's using a resonator guitar on this track. Banjos also have resonators, so there is a similar short, tin like sound.

@lastnote
@lastnote 3 жыл бұрын
@@djC653 Nope - mandolins do not sound like that. They are tuned higher and have double strings, so you would hear some chorusing that is not present in The Chain recording. But if you don't trust me, I just looked up the wikipedia entry. "The finished song has a basic rock structure, although it has two distinct portions: the main verse and chorus, and the outro. Influences of hard rock, folk, and country are also present. The Dobro, a type of resonator guitar, supplies the verse riff.[4][9] The song is in E minor, which is the relative minor key of G major.[10] The vocal range is G3 to C♯5."

This is the only Fleetwood Mac song credited to all five members of their 1977 lineup. Since various pieces were assembled to make the song, they all had some contribution. This song came to represent the resilience of Fleetwood Mac and the strength of their bond as they continued on for many years despite their personal and professional difficulties. It was often the first song they played in concert

THE CHAIN The song was literally spliced together from combinations of several previously rejected materials. The song originally represented the internal fractures - both romantically and professionally - of the band members, but eventually came to symbolize their triumph in staying together.
@irishgrl
@irishgrl 2 жыл бұрын
Every member contributed to this song which was a little different than usual. There were basically 3 songwriters: Stevie, Lindsey & Christine. Stevie & Lindsey were falling apart & John & Christine McVie were also splitting up. Yet, they ALL made a conscious decision to keep the band together (chain keep us together) even tho every member was pursuing their own path emotionally, some were seeing other people outside the relationships (running in the shadows). This song became their signature concert opener. It signified the sacrifices they all made to keep the band together regardless of how they felt about working together….and it made for some amazing lyrics (Stevie & Lindsey especially) This band has been a staple in my collection since the mid 70s.

To understand this 1977 song and the Fleetwood Mac album 'Rumours'... u gotta know the history of the band: Fleetwood Mac was formed in the 1960's in England as a blues rock band feat. Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass) & Peter Green (guitar)... However, the band was unstable and by 1974, they had a number of records, Peter Green had quit the band after having a mental breakdown, and the band which also featured John's wife Christine McVie (organ & vocals) relocated to L.A. and were looking for a new guitarist. They came across a record by a duo called Buckingham-Nicks which featured guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and his gf Stevie Nicks on vocals... the record did not sell, but Lindsey Buckingham became an on-demand guitarist - he was asked to join Fleetwood Mac, and he accepted only if Stevie came along too. Fleetwood Mac was reborn in 1975 when the self-titled album was released, featuring songs (and vocals) by Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks & Buckingham... it became a massive hit. But w/ fame & fortune came drugs, egos and conflicts. When Fleetwood Mac began recording the next album 'Rumours', John & Christine had separated and Christine was dating someone in the band's crew... Lindsey & Stevie were fighting all the time and split up as the songs were being written & recorded - so the lyrics that came out were very emotional and real. The couples' break-ups and afterwards having to work together and see each other every day was a very painful situation... even Mick Fleetwood's wife left him around that time. Lindsey Buckingham wrote "Go your own way" and "Second hand news" about Stevie... She wrote "Dreams" & "I don't want to know" about Lindsey... (Christine McVie wrote "You make loving fun" and "Don't stop" about her new relationship after her split) "The Chain" started as a ballad written by Stevie Nicks... but this final version was credited to every member of the band, who added their parts. The song refers to the situation of breaking up but still tied together because of the band. When the album 'Rumours' was released in 1977, it became one of the biggest albums in music history - right next to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'... AC/DC's 'Back in black'... Led Zeppelin's fourth album... The Eagles' "Hotel California" ... In fact, it made the charts AGAIN today, after a Tiktok video went viral w/ the song 'Dreams' playing in the back. Despite their rocky relationship thru the years, Lindsey & Stevie seemingly put their animosity aside to work together in Fleetwood Mac in 1997. But in 2017, Stevie demanded that Lindsey be fired for the band to continue touring (he was replaced by 2 live guitarists) Christine McVie left the band in 1999... but was welcomed back in 2014. She & her ex-husband John seem to be on better terms today.

My original introduction to Fleetwood Mac was their 1968 "single" (Albatross) which is not a song but a piece of music. It was both mesmerizing/haunting & relaxing, thanks to that I looked out for any future work of theirs. Many, many wonderful songs followed & the discovery of Stevie Nicks as a lead vocalist extraordinaire. I hope you enjoy exploring them as much as I have.

True story. I first head of Fleetwood Mac at about midnight on watch on a US Navy Destroyer (USS Turner Joy DD-951 -- (famous ship, Google it) one night in the Indian Ocean in 1975. (A few days later we almost went live fire with a Soviet Cruiser, a matter of historical fact, and a moment for which I was recognized by the fleet because it was me who discovered the Soviets in our multi-national fleet vicinity.) But that night on watch at about 2:00 a.m. I first heard Fleetwood Mac's White Album. Absolutely blown away! First song was Christine McVie. Opened my eyes to this band. I was in the Indian Ocean 2,000 miles from any land at that moment. Fast forward, two years.... Fleetwood Mac has introduced the Rumors album. I was still in Navy and in my US home port San Diego. Fleetwood Mac was having a 1-night only concert in San Diego. But that same night I was scheduled for duty. No way I could go to their concert as I had duty that Friday night. But... freaking me out to this day... about 4:00 pm that day my command Chief came to me and said I was being transferred to another duty station that Monday, so I could leave early for the Friday. Incredible! I ran to change into civilian clothes (not uniform) and drove over to San Diego Sports Arena to see if I could still l get tickets for Fleetwood Mac that night. At the ticket booth they told me, "You are lucky! There are 7 tickets left!" So, I bought one, went in. This was about 2 hours before the concert was due to start. and watched a 4-hour concert that blew me away! Three encores including the last one with Mick Fleetwood, shirtless and shoeless playing a ten-minute bongo solo! Now... here is the part that is going to absolutely blow your minds!!!!! Fast-forward to 1989. My wife (at the time) happens to call in middle of night to local Los Angeles TV station and wins visit with Fleetwood Mac live on air that next Friday night!!!! So I go!!!!! I meet the band in person! Talk with all of them face-to-face in person!!! I tell Steve Nix my entire whole story above in person!! She cries!!!! She thanks me for my service to this country and kisses me on the cheek!!!! I have pics which I will dig up and send later but OMG what a story!!!!!!

Classic….they are hitmakers now for years.This is off of one of the greatest albums ever “ Rumours”,which they wrote when they were breaking up.At the time Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were married,and Christine and John McVie were getting divorced,so I like to say that “ Emotions wrote this classic album”.The songs have a prevailing theme.The Chain here represents the band itself.

I love watching your reactions for the 2 different approaches you take to music. Lex goes with the feelings and Brad goes into the lyrics. As a child of the 70's and 80's I recommend not taking the lyrics as literally as music today... it tended to be more like poetry set to music... and a lot of songs were written on drugs lol.

Lol at classic rock, it's just rock, perhaps soft rock. Classic rock is something made up decades later as a marketing term for radio stations. All those bands lumped under that label still fall into the same genres artists do today. BTW, the song is about the two couples in the group ending their romantic relationships but not wanting to end their personal and professional relationships.

I've noticed a lot of reaction channels getting hung up on pigeon-holing groups; nailing down genres. It's like, hey - it's all good. Rock is a big tent - there's room for lots of different styles and sounds. The important question is: do you ENJOY what you're listening to?

Far as I'm concerned, what makes any rock "classic" is if you keep going back to it, time after time, listen after listen. Nothing hard and fast about it; classics are just the stuff that stands the test of time on the sheer quality.

@@RickJaeger I just call that music I like. There's no 'music I like' radio stations around. Lots of 'classic rock' stations though. In the 80's 'classic rock' stations played music from the 60's and 70's. Now they play music from the 60's to 90's. They're too hung up on genres but classic rock isn't a genre.

Fleetwood Mac started in the 60s as part of the movement in the UK that took blues back to its US roots. The songer, songwriter lead guitarist Peter Green suffered a drug induced breakdown and eventually the band relaunched itself with the line up on this song. The whole album was born out of the relationships of the various members of the band falling apart, hence the album being called Rumours. It’s the best album they made and I feel very content that on its release in the 70s I was able to hear this on its release and that the years it spent in the charts proved its popularity. I’d recommend checking out some Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac because he was a great writer too.
