There's an episode of "That 70's Show" where the teens are heading to a concert by The Who that night. The mother asks what type of music does The Who play. So they started playing a tape of Squeeze Box. At first Mom thought it sounded like a nice pleasant song......until it got to the "in and out, and in and out, and in and out" part and then she got a horrified look on her face and shrieked "OH MY GOD!"🤣

The term squeezebox (also squeeze box, squeeze-box) is a colloquial expression referring to any musical instrument of the general class of hand-held bellows-driven free reed aerophones such as the accordion and the concertina. The term is so applied because such instruments are generally in the shape of a rectangular prism or box, and the bellows is operated by squeezing in and drawing out. There is a double meaning, of course!!!

Even as a kid, I knew there were "naughty" implications in the lyrics to this tune. But... a squeeze box 🪗 is a musical instrument that's played at chest level, very similar to an accordion. Mama's always right, but I also think Brad has something there too. ✌️

While you did land on a "squeeze box" being both an accordion and a double entendre, you missed the last bit of the puzzle when you guessed that "mama's squeeze box" was her chest. To get to the actual answer, m'man, you gotta travel south of there a little. And, y'know, think about what part of "mama's" anatomy could be considered "a box that squeezes."

A squeeze box is a slang term for a "concertina", one of those accordions you see in back woods hillbilly music that does not have piano keys on it like normal accordions, it just has some buttons that you press as you squeeze together and pull apart the ends of the concertina.

I always think of Who By Numbers as being the most rounded Who album. Like it hasn't got many gems like on Who's Next and Who Are You, but it's consistently good throughout. Also, it's got electric and acoustic guitar pretty much throughout so it has a wholesome feel much like The Beatles' Help! I'm an electric guitar bloke, but I do appreciate this sound.

Here is an excerpt from "Songfacts" which describe the meaning of the song: "Squeeze box" is a slang term for an accordion, but it's also a slang for the vagina. The band just wanted to see if they could get away with singing about the joys of explicit sex. In the liner notes to Pete Townshend's Scoop compilation album, he wrote that he recorded the song for fun one day when he bought an accordion. The accordion gave the song a polka-like rhythm and the lyrics were "intended as a poorly aimed dirty joke". Townshend didn't think it would ever be a hit." Best wishes @all from Hamburg (Germany)

Music for radio play was highly censored at the time. According to Pete Townshend this song was written specifically to push the limits of what they could get by the censors and what they couldn't. A lot of artists at the time would do this.

Hilarious reaction. And yeah it's totally a double entendre. An accordion is the big heavy squeeze instrument with keys and buttons whereas a Squeezebox is just very simple and you play it out in front of you and you push in and you pull out. It sounds almost like a richer deeper harmonica.

From: Song Facts......."Squeeze Box" is a slang term for an accordion, but it is also slang for the vagina. The band just wanted to see if they could get away with singing about the joys of explicit sex. >> In the liner notes to Pete Townshend's compilation album Scoop, he wrote that he recorded the song for fun one day when he had bought himself an accordion. The accordion gave the song a polka-esque rhythm and the lyrics were "intended as a poorly aimed dirty joke." Townshend had no thought of it ever becoming a hit. The song is about an accordion (sort of), but there is hardly any of the instrument in the song. You can hear some in the section about 90 seconds in that goes, "squeeze me, come on and squeeze me," but the subsequent instrumental section is mostly banjo. Pete Townshend played both instruments. Roger Daltrey has always been fond of this song. He told Uncut magazine: "What's great about 'Squeeze Box' is that it's so refreshingly simple, an incredible catchy song. A good jolly. I've never had a problem with that song because it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is and I love it for that. Live audiences love it. Nothing wrong with a bit of 'in-and-out', mate!" Poison covered this in 2002, releasing the song as a single and including it on their album Hollyweird. According to Mojo magazine, John Entwistle charged The Who £30 for the caricature of the four of them that he drew for the cover of The Who by Numbers album. By contrast, the montage of black and white pictures that Townsend commissioned from photographer Ethan Russell for the artwork to the album that preceded it, Quadrophenia, set them back £16,000.

Both of Pete Townshend's (Guitarist for the Who) were professional musicians... This was (initially) a song written by him about his childhood recollections of their neighborhood block parties in Acton, West London, as they were some of his happiest in an otherwise very volatile home life.... But he does admit as composing continued, it did turn into a double entendre', toss-away song he never thought would be a hit. He also claims it was among his mother's favorite Who tunes and that she DID get the joke and loved it!!

Last comment prolly. AC/DC everybody goes over the edge with Angus, awesome energy, no one gives a thought to some serious energy unseen in his brother and massive creator of the music. The rhythm guitar in the back. As much energy flowing but never noticed. He is zoned out while in his energy level. Hope he is enjoying the WALK ON. There's a channel "Haksul" And check out some Malcolm Young isolated, like "Jailbreak" Malcolm plays clean, an guitar, a patchcord and an amp. He is my hero. WHen a guy asked me to learn guitar so I could play rhythm this is the guy. I don't play lead, much. I think Malcolm was the madness or inspiration to many lyrics.

Biggest Who geek ever here and this track is off Who By Numbers LP. Slip Kid, How Many Friends, and Pete singing Blue, Red, and Grey are fantastic.
