Tom was a Welsh coal miner who got "discovered" in '65. This was his first hit and it made him a star who got his own weekly TV show and continued to have a VERY long career. This song was written for another British singer, Cilla Black, and he just did the demo. The story is that she heard his demo and walked out of the recording studio because she was so impressed with it.

This was a way sped up version for TV it's about twice the speed he usually sings it.. You should try and find some videos of him singing Gospel and Blues he's amazing with those aswell! In fact Tom was best mates with ELVIS even spent a Holiday at Graceland with his wife and Elvis and Precilla Presley!! (he idolised Elvis and Elvis Idolised Tom! -Mutual respect for eachothers vocal/For given talent and gift and just natural ability to feel and sing not only these types of Songs but both Tom and Elvis sand so great Gospel, Blues, Soul etc). Tom is a very versatile singer. Even now in his 80s (as a judge on "The Voice UK" the other judges like 'Will.i.Am' and "Jennifer Hudson" the others etc, will get him to stand up and do a song from the chair or the stage acapella and Jennifer Hudson loves him She often sings Duets with Tom which are just Gold!! Either from their chairs or sometimes they'll get up and do a duet on the stage with her or whoever and he can STILL stay with Jennifer Hudson for power and Range on the duets he's truly a great singer! Not sure what other ones you checked out of his yet. Delilah (is a classic) Green Green Grass it Home (also a classic) There's loads. Maybe see if you can dig out some of his live performances from later in his career. He headlined Glastonbury I think a few years back played a whole set! But he's done some amazing studio duets and songs aswell blues and Gospel... 👍🏴
