To understand System of a Down and their lead Serj Tankian is to understand how political they are. Serj especially is an Activist more than a Musician. They are very much all about Anti-War, Anti-Nationalism and Anti-Authoritarianism; Serj's four grandparents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide. With System of a Down it is always political.

Haha great reaction! To me the song is about the chaos of life between the quiet peace before birth and after death and how some people pointlessly try to control it. The last verse also comes across as how they decide to live their chaotic life - aiming to be bright and bring vibrance to others lives, which kind of explains the hype and energy they put into their songs.

He's such a visual performer. Also the whole gmo thing is mostly a buzzword. Most things aren't truly clean as "organic" and gmo= genetically modified organism, is actually a good thing. It doesn't do terrible stuff to the "organism" to the corn or what have you. It actually helps protect the corn, the crops. It acts as a deterrent from bugs that will eat up all the crops.

This song holds dual meanings. It is both a commentary on the conditions of urban life in the US and compares it to parallels in the complicit events leading up to the Armenian Genocide. Where citizens became content with the status quo and allowed the genocide to take place. It usually goes hand-hand with Chopsuey which is more about the state of urban decay leading to regret and depression and ultimately suicide. The eating seeds part is a direct reference to the popularity of teens eating sunflower seeds in 2001 in the US as well as reports of when people were being kidnapped by death squads. There was one account of a group of men who got out of their truck and pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds to munch on as they watched with zero concern for the people being captured by the death squad "flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of our truck". That is why the majority of the song is so toned down and a bit depressing. It is like "the world has gone to shit and no one wants to do anything about it, so what else is there left to do but sit quietly and wait for my turn?"

I feel like this song speaks to how consumerism and private ownership, how for every day working people as cogs in the system, they’re life’s remain mundane, numb, limited by existing systems put in place by those who came before us. Letting go of the consumer indoctrination pressed upon us, we stop comparing ourselves, our life’s, our relationships, are values…to others, instead letting go of everything we’ve been conditioned to believe we need to be happy, to be successful, to be content… experiencing this “letting go” is liberating.

I think you're onto something with the whole planting seeds thing, I never looked at it this way, but it kind of connects to my understanding of the song. To me the seeds are metaphorical, and It's about the media and the powerful warping peoples minds for their own benefit, plant an idea (seed), manipulate how they want it to grow, and the finished product is not what the people want, but it's the people that have unintentionally made it what it is.
