Fishing as a Co-Angler and have questions about what the Pro prefers... or Expects? In this bass fishing video I do a little Q&A over the comments from the first video in the co-angler series. This covered some of the secrets that I have learned over many years of observing co-anglers compete from the back deck of my boat. What the great ones do to fish at the top level of their game every single day they are on the water. The Things you can do to improve and the list is long! This bass fishing video will get you started. Common and Get Started Now! Leave additional questions for Part II Q&A.

On the subject of cross-creeking 12:32 If I’m a co-angler paying a $475.00 fee plus giving the pro $40.00 for boat fuel, add to that all my travel expenses. There should not be a gray area but a rule in the books that any and all areas in the back of the boat (45degrees) is open to the co-angler, period. For a pro in the front of the boat to get upset because a co is casting to the other side of the creek is selfish. It makes one think there is a lot of truth that 90% of the fees being paid is so the top 10% of the anglers can make a living. Great series Bradley, its very interesting!

I've had this happen to me (in a BFL tourny), boater running 2' of water, 10' from the bank. Boater asked me not to fish the other side. I replied, run the boat down the middle and I won't have to fish the other bank. Boater thought about it for a minute, I made one cast to the other bank, he moved to the middle. I made the comment. We will likely catch more fish if we work together instead of against each other. He replied, you're right.

Great job, I’ve fished a few co-angler mlf a long time ago. That’s why I don’t fish them. I’m 68 and retired so I thought I’d try it again. Joined a club and qualified for state in B.A.S.S. nation in Tennessee. 2 day tournament. I ask if I could prefish with both angels 1 day angler said yes we shook off 9 keepers a piece. On my fishing spots, he never fished there. 1st day we never caught a keeper. That sucked but we had day 2. The second angler didn’t prefish but I overheard him say he already made the cut on 1st day, and that he would just help the co-angler in his cub make it . I didn’t know what he meant till next day he hit 4 points and I caught 2 little ones, than he went to a big cove and we sat in the middle of it all day. Where we were 200 yards from any bank and his boss came by said I got 4 keepers where you told me to go and his boss got 2 nd place. And it was in the back of the cove we were in. I said can we go back there or get closer to the bank, he wouldn’t even speak to me . I knew than he was keeping me off the bank. That’s why I didn’t fish anymore co-anglers.

Thank you !! I’m 60 years old and yes I’m wanting to want to fish a rest tournament!! I was wondering how the young pros would react to an older guy !! I’ve bass fished my entire life and have only won some local tournaments!! The last thing we want to do is hurt your fishing !! We just want that experience #1 and we or I will help you the best I can ! I’m only 60 but I installed flooring for 35 years so my knees have been replaced!! But just because we’ve had knees replaced doesn’t mean we can’t net a fish !! Us old beat up flooring guys !! We are better laying on a deck netting a fish better than anyone else lol !! Just saying ! When I was working I was fishing Pickwick 4 days a week or nights !! And still put my kids through college!! With no student loans!!

As a person who does both angler and Co, really like these videos. Because the rules up front and the back are different! I have been back boated by a angler, less say that won't happen again with that person. Filed and showed pictures of what that person was doing! It's against the rules to back boat a co. Always learning new stuff from the front or the back. As for shutting off the back electronics to save on battery life is total BS! I am a electronics technician and the graph doesn't draw much power at all! Livescope, livesight, and mega live draw a lot of power. I run a lithium 12v 30ah min. Battery for those unit. Your normal transducers like birds, garmin, and lowcraps can run off the starting battery for days and not hurt the battery. If the boater has problems with power get better batteries! Fished with Tom Monsoor in a local Veterans fishing tournament/ great guy, and we was running out of power at the end of the day, he runs lithium but everything was totally wrong on hookups and layout. And we still ran all the graph all day! Here is something I seen the other day, a co with livescope / ice fishing style setup, on the back of a boat. So he had his own electronic to find fish. Lot of money but was like okay! Ever heard of a co doing that and what a boater may be would say? Thx

I got into co angling to learn the format of the series I am fishing, with a possibility of learning a few things from some of the guys that I fished with. I bought a 2013 Z520 last year, so I am not planning on co angling for ever. I've fished with some really awesome guys, but I've also fished with some pure jerks along the way as well. One thing that I can definitely say I've learned is how NOT to treat or talk to co anglers or people in general. There was one day that I put my rod down, sat down and ate a PB and Jelly sandwich like I was mad at it and completely gave up, because the assistant department store manager/wanna be KVD in the front of the boat had one smart a$$ comment after another when I'd ask a question. The terms "I couldn't wait to get back to the dock" were a huge understatement for me that day. That was the only boater that I didn't feel bad for while watching him bring a big fat zero to the scales.

I totally understand 💯 percent! I’m sure you are aware that these feelings will probably come back to you someday while in the front of your Ranger! Good Series! I had a cross creeking scenario happen to me as a coangler last year. I always felt I had a right to that water but I respected his wishes and stopped fishing it. Later that day he had one roll on a chatterbait and he told me to throw back in there. Turned out to be a 6lber, which helped me cash a check. I always wondered if I was right for feeling that I could have fished that water if I wanted. Thanks for solidifying my position.

What a great job addressing an under covered topic. As a co angler myself all I can say is every guy is dift and can make or ruin a day. Im always respectful, it's his expensive boat. Always offer $$ for gas etc.. and always drop what I'm doing to grab the net if called for. Some guys situate the boat where u got nothing and others hit a weedline perpendicular so u can each cast down it. All u can do with an ass is shake ur head but if he wants to come back and shake a finger about something. 1. Im paying to fish also and 2. Im a Marine Corps Veteran that's silently praying he gets aggressive. Lol

Last season at state and regionals as a Co, I had guys shut off their graphs. After day 2 at regionals, I read the rule book cover to cover.... I was hoping no one else had noticed the loophole in the rules. Im gaining confidence as a boater, but for club stuff I'm still a Co. 9:56 GREAT question. And to aid in that, I had a great experience with this on Percy Priest yesterday. While I did break a few off to not waste my boater’s time, my boater explained to me while my idea of a swinging jig was good, it was bad in the way we were fishing because it doesn’t go through brush correctly. He gave me a 5/16 tungsten weight, and I tied on an EWG hook, used the same structure bug I was getting bites on, and I ended up not getting hung up near as much. He explained to me why my idea wasn’t right in a way that taught me.

You don’t have to ask, there is no written rules about it, defend your rights first of all, those boaters don’t give a damn about coanglers catching fish. They even don’t want to save baits, lures, etc imagine how many pounds of lead ended up in lakes because of those boaters.

Yes some great advice I’ve seen all the videos on the topic. In my 3rd season as a co- fishing bfl Buckeye series. Missed some good opportunities to put fish in the boat primarily because I was too in the game if you catch my drift, always had great people to fish with boaters were all very gracious, and I had a blast. Execution , just didn’t get the job done. I’m a stickler for details so I learned how to control my bait and get them to the fish. I learned to skip with my bait casters 20 years ago. I love to skip docks and pontoon boats. I think you’re exactly right in every instance, I’m 58 going on 35, I just do what I do, lol don’t get hung- up, fish the moment, have fun. We get to fish that day. Great info bro. God bless

I am a disabled and have to use a cane for balance. 1st thing I asked my pro the night before was there a back seat for me to sit in and lean against. I did bring a pedestal just in case. He had a 3/8 and 1/2 black and blue jig with blue Zoom chunk on both. Fished backs of creeks mainly on a post spawn bite and he would snap the jig up and let it fall getting a reaction bite. Great learning experience.

So happy you mentioned your experience as a co. Entering as a co angler and learning more about fishing than actually fishing is something I was wondering about. I just hope I draw a pro that’s ok with a co who would like to ask questions and or just shut up and watch and learn. Either way I will show up with an either or attitude. If all goes well in a year I’ll enter as pro only with a new boat. But it is paramount that I get the taste on the back of the boat and absolutely learn and absorb everything I can. These videos are extremely eye opening and helpful. Because I won’t even try this adventure if I don’t learn the etiquette and little nuances that freshwater pros deal with. It’s very different than the crew type tourneys I’ve been in on salt. Just have to see how it goes before I commit to it. Because if I do I know I’ll be throwing a lot of money at a cool learning experience. Lol. But you live once and God willing if you can try then you should try.

How on earth would a Co be able use something like that ? You have to mount the pole for the transducer somewhere to go over the side of the boat. Doesn’t seem to make any sense IMO.

I had the opportunity to fish with Jim twice, on Grand & Dardenelle 20 years ago. Tremendous days & great learning experiences and I got 2nd big bass on Dardenelle with him flipping a salt craw up river. But-he had to put his rod up on Grand cause it wasn’t a jig he was flipping so he put it up! I will not disclose it either! Great days X 2 for learning. thanks for your updates & QandA.

Loved this layout of video q&a. I'm sure you con honestly drop sections of this type of video with everything from baits, techniques, knots, ect...These co-angler series is really nice though. Another co-angler question, Been fishing casually for 3 years and always fished here and there since I was a kid. Turning 27 this year and I've went from 1 rod and 2 small bait boxes, now it's 6 rods, 2 30L hiking backpacks filled with baits and tackle. How do I approach becoming a co-angler for the first time and know I'm getting good leadership from the boater. Thank you very much.

I fished pro in the early ‘90s and fished a lot of draw events. I’ve fished a few tournaments as a co angler once in a FLW tour event. Let me tell you what happened. My pro was fishing parallel to a brake with a spinner bait. He commented that a fish followed his bait, the water was fairly clear, I looked behind the boat and the fish was following in the shadow so I dropped down a drop shot and caught it. This process continued until I was culling and my pro had only one fish. At that point I told him what was going on and he rounded out his limit with a drop shot. Point being is pay attention and just fish.

Hey Hallman thanks man for answering my question directly about age. I was surprised to hear my name on your video kinda cool! Any rate just wanted to let you know I don't have any physical problems that would prevent me from doing it. A lot of times I feel that even though I'm going to be 72 Tomorrow Groundhog Day that in my mind I'm still in my 40s physically. I'm one of the lucky ones I think at my age group that doesn't really have any ailments per se. I'm sure I'm a little slower than I actually was at 40 but maybe not. Thanks for the advice! Who knows I may see you as your co-angler at some point! LOL!

Like the format and subject. I fished FLWs as a co angler and had mixed results and feelings about it. Seems I could only put together one good day during a derby. I always blamed the draw but I'm sure I'm to blame as well. You have to be able to adapt on the fly and keep your head in it on the tough days. Opportunities will present themselves, you have to be ready to take advantage and execute. Great questions and tips thanks!

I know very little about tournament fishing and even less about the coangler position but I have found these videos very interesting. One question I have is, is there any existing etiquette for the boat owners to not hang the guy on the back out to dry all day in terms of boat position? Do the just fish like nobody’s back there or will they throw them a bone? It seems like putting a guy on offshore structure in 70’ of water with no electronics or running in 2’ of water with a mud slick trailing the boat all day is pretty shitty. Is that just the way it goes sometimes or should coanglers not be put in that position?
@BradleyHallmanFishing
@BradleyHallmanFishing 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is both things happen. Boaters do things at times to try and help the co anglers catch more fish. Then there are other times when they huge the bank and it limits opportunities for the guys in the back. Neither are right or wrong. Look 👀 what a lot of guys don’t realize is these are not team tournaments. It’s the guy in the front of the boats job to catch as many fish as possible in a day. It’s also the guy in the back of the boats job to catch as many fish as possible with every opportunity that is presented to him throughout the day. Some days have tougher situations that create less opportunities out of the back. There not always the fault of the boater. Time of year and tournament waters selected are done by the tournament organizations. Sight fishing lakes and season is just one example.

Once again, I commend you for making these videos. As far as the health issue part, I was quite aware when at 42 I had bi-lateral hip replacement due to a rare disease and I competed a year later at Neely Henry if I would be able to without hindering my boater. Before I actually committing to the tournament, I spent several days on my own boat to see if I would be able to stand on a deck all day. Turns out I could and paid my deposit and balance to compete. Can't wait for this season!

One piece of advice I got before joining my Local club. Take the time and fish as a co-angler for at least 3 years in as many different trails/clubs/opens as you can. Getting to fish with so many different people you not only learn a lot of techniques but can start to hone in on what’ works for you.

I agree 100% with you Brad. From this pros perspective, just like in any other profession there are good eggs and bad eggs. Its the luck of the draw being a co angler. As a pro, I leave my graphs on. Saving battery excuse is total BS! Cross creeking? As a pro, it is my responsibility to position my boat so that I have maximum opportunity, not to keep my co from opportunity. However, I'm seeing comments by cos on here saying they wouldn't let a pro do this or that....BS. Thats going to make for a long day as a co. If you don't like taking the chance of fishing with an a$$hole, I would suggest you get your own boat so you can make the decisions. Until then, go out and fish, learn and act like a grown adult! PS. Much respect Mr. Hallman. This is a great format!
