Wasn't Me. LOL. I rode with Aaron Martens one day about 15 yrs ago thereabouts on Lanier. Aaron was incredible to be in the boat with. The first thing he said after he caught his first bass was jokingly....I guess you want my autograph now. I said Nope. He looked confused. I said you put your pants on the same as I do. He laughed and said we are gonna have a great day. I said yes sir we are and we did. We joked all day. He made the top 10 that day and introduced me to his wife and kids after. What a day I will not forget.

I used to fish the FLW’s as a co-angler and before we meet up I would ask what would we be doing ? Shallow or deep ? Because that’s how I cut down on the amount of tackle/rods I would bring. Lots easier to just bring 2-3 rods vs 5-6. So there’s that.

Its not hard for 2 people to fish from front boat in tandem. Esp if you fish different retrieve angles. It takes coordination but fishing in the back sucks when not on same page. Moving baits can rendered unless at parallel angle then they start rolling. Also if you want to throw a slower bait and the front man is just trolling along.

Sounds like a true knott head. I can say as a co angler I have only had two bad experiences. One was fishing with a chain smoker and the other was completely back seating me and would cast back on a missed blow up before I had a second shot at it. Competition can bring out the worst in folks.

Advice for co-anglers: 1. Be prompt to meet with your boater as early as possible. Assist with launching if needed. Stand by to assist pretty much throughout the day(s). Again, offer assistance as you are able to. 2. Bring only a reasonable amount of gear. 3. Be prepared for the day and bring your own personal items such as rain gear, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc. 4. Treat the boat better than the owner. Experience will help with what you need to know and when you don’t, asking will go a long ways. 5. Don’t offset the trip with asking for any special navigation needs such as going to fishing spots, marinas, restrooms, etc. It’s ok to offer up spots but don’t expect to go to any. And… Yah, take your dump before you leave the dock. 6. Adjust your fishing to fishing to what your partner is doing. It will likely only help you. 7. Don’t leave your gear in an unready state. When captain says, we’re moving, be ready within seconds, not minutes. 8. Absolutely NO BANANAS.

My best friend's Dad told me a long time ago that if you really want to learn to fish well that you need to go fishing with a professional who can give you pointers!! Chet (best friend's Dad) said that you'll learn more in one hour with a pro than you can fishing for a year by yourself!! I really believe this!! I used to fish (a long time ago) with Phil Marks who taught me how to properly fish a artificial worm!! Phil was also a hell of a duck hunter and I still remember him calling in a group of Pintails like a maestro and calling out what the ducks would do with every call that he made!! We lost Phil a few years ago but I still remember all that he taught me about fishing!! It's too bad that this co-fisher that you talked about didn't take advantage of the knowledge that he could have attained by watching your fishing strategy. Thanks for the video!

Fished as a co angler one time and did not care for it much at all.I drew Homer Humphrey on Table Rock lake and the first question out of his mouth was where are u from, mind u I am and always have been from Chicago so I tell him I'm from Chicago and his response to me was oh u are probably married to some black woman aren't you😢. Wtf kind of question is that to someone u have never met before and know nothing about ? I kept quiet for a minute being polite, and mind you I am white growing up in Chicago I really never cared about race one way or the other as I have .any black and Hispanic friends in my mind good people are good peoole. So after about ten minutes of awkward silence I responded by saying I was not married to a black woman however my wife of 5 years at that time was 100% Puerto Rican. And to my amazement his response was same thing as a black person.Could not believe his comment !! Being from Chicago of course my first thought was to smack him right in the mouth but I did not.but let me tell you I think that was the last thing we said to each other all day.very inappropriate to say the least.i caught 2 fish that day he caught 0 ,I thought Karma played a part that but what a racial p.o.s that guy was to say the least !!

I fished with a woman pro that’s was raked in the top 3 back in the early 80’s. When I got to check in I was told her boat was all ready in the water to just go down and put my stuff in the boat and get ready. It’s like 35 Degrees wind blowing, the lakes white capping and sleeting and no windshield on the dummy side. About 5 minutes before take off this woman about 5’1” 120 pounds comes walking down the dock in a snowmobile ski suite wearing a life jacket and a motorcycle helmet with a full shield gets in the boat while some guy is untying the boat and shoves off. She fires up the boat and starts heading to ward the front of all the boats at the front ready for take off. We never stopped just about the time we got to the front of the boats, they fired the shot gun and we went across white caps as fast as that 150 black max would go on that 18’ boat. She scared the living hell out of me! It’s was the coldest wettest day on the water I’ve ever fished. She caught a few fish throwing a spinner bait. I never got a bite. A lot more to this story but my post is long enough.

13:17 interesting story. I fished the FLW for a year as a favor to a friend who fished as a boater. Shared travel expenses etc. I hoped I could learn something from new people. I should say that I have won over 100 local and regional tournaments, 3 Ranger, Champion boats. I chose not to fish the pro circuit because I had a good job. I was treated very poorly by most of my boaters who didn’t know anything about me. I concluded that the FLW was a co-angler fuck fest. Boaters did everything they could to keep a co-angler from catching a fish.

Great story Randy and sorry for the d bag. I have only fished co angler once in the 2000 Classic Media tournament in Chicago with Brent Chapman. He and I settled it early when he asked me how I wanted to fish this . I said let's have fun. You'll have enough pressure in the Classic ( which has no co anglers). We did well and had fun. For the Classic, I rode as the judge observer in Edwin Evers boat. We couldn't talk techniques so I watched, listened and learned.

Being a co angler is a dream. The Pro is likely on fish and the Co is is a unique position to help fine tune the pattern the pro has spent 2 days working on. If the pro is pitching a jig I'm pitching a worm or creature. Be a part of the boat. You will do better than you think if you approach it positively. And don't bring an arsenal. I think Rick Clunn was asked what scared him about a Co. I believe he said " the guy who shows up with one rod and paper lunch bag".LOL

The worst wasn't a co-angler but pro angler. He didn't really tell me what we were doing, other than fishing deep. It was fishing deep ledges with huge crankbaits or giant worms w 1 oz weight. I get rigged finally, and he whips the boat on some casts 90 degrees, says I'm fishing past mid point the boat. Does that a few times. Then when I start whipping big casts out the stern, he'd punch it on the trolling motor forward. One more.....I'd start fishing hard, rapid fire. He said stop, put your LJ on. He would crank the big motor....trim low and goose it. To stir up the school. Every question I had was met with a Huh? Btw....IDC....his name was Terry Steele.

It's too bad that Bill and the FLW didn't have the spine to back up the pro's and the entire field. Certain co-anglers that earned those reputations should not have been allowed to fish on the circuit or should have ponied up and fished from the front. Keith Honeycutt was #1 it was like drawing -50 spots on the board having to babysit him through the day. It's ok to name names when you are on the side of truth.

When I fish with my buddy, it doesn’t matter who’s boat we’re in (had to sell my old Cee Bee Avenger) or his Triton, I gladly head to the back of the boat!! In the back, don’t have to run trolling motor! If he flips, I’ll top water, if he’s running a blade, I’ll run a fast trap, etc. Hell I’ve whooped on him 40-45% of the time. I would love to be a Co-angler, especially on the CA Delta, that’s what we fish!

There are co-anglers out there that will never understand the fact that it is NOT your job to put them on fish. Also I probably would have told the tourney director about his threats to not sign my slip, because he obviously did that before as a threat to someone to get his way and figured it would work again.

If I were ever lucky enough to fish with you or any angler of your caliber, I'd keep my mouth shut, listen to everything you have to say and imitate every move you make. What ab honor to learn from someone with your experience. I've struggled my whole life to learn from watching Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston and others. My hero has always been Ricky Klunn. Of course I've bought every lure, line and fishing combo these pros have recommended, but recently I figured out that that's the reason these pros have shows, to promote their sponsors. LOL. I too grew up with Hank Parker, Babe Winkleman and the others and have the utmost respect for these guys that laid the foundation for our sport. I just recently went old school with my 5'6" Fenwick Lunkerstik and my Ambassador 4500 reel. I can catch just as many if not more using this old technique. Fishing is fun again as a sport rather than try to match the pros fish for fish!

I was hoping to draw you as a co -angler this year. I figured it was a one in two hundred shot.....but no such luck. When I fish as a co-angler, I discuss netting early on, and if it is preferred, I net with no hesitation!. I stop what I'm doing and grab immediately, that's what a co-angler is supposed to do. And if my boater is catching fish, I try to figure out what I need to do, and usually I bring a little of everything so I am prepared for anything. Five rods, and a tackle bag with what I think will work, and a little of over things to cover me for anything. When I fished Lake of the Ozarks, I prefished going through all kinds of lures and colors, and I fished different water so I would be prepared for whatever my boater was doing. I had enough in practice to get me to the second day. Unfortunately, I was not prepared for a motor going out at 9:30. I still fished my butt off trying though!

I had a similar situation. Fishing a big weed flat bombing chatterbaits and ripping them through the grass. I was catching fish, and he said, "so what am I even supposed to do." I offered him a chatterbait if he didn't have one. He didn't take it and continued to whine even after my limit was filled. I was thinking, "Dude, this is best case scenario for you. You can cast anywhere and it will be productive water." We could have been pitching docks or laydowns where I would have had first shot at every target.

On the other end of this kinda story... my fist pro/am tournament I fished as the co-angler and I drew Gary Dobyns on Lake Orville Ca.. I was very new to tournament fishing so I had no idea who he was, and I had never fish Oroville before most of my experience was on the Ca Delta. As we were sitting in his boat waiting to blast off we got to talking (my name is Richard) he says "oh my sons name is Richard also" then I told him "my Dad's name is Gary what a coincidence" we had a good laugh, then I asked "have you been fishing professional very long?" He kinda chuckled is a none sarcastic very humble way and said " yeah a few years" so I ask him "have you done well in the past tourney" he says "yeah I've won a few". So this sparked my interest and I asked "have you won any boats" he said yes I have won a few boats... so I ask "a few, what's a few" (remember this is 30 years ago so I'm trying to remember the qty he told me.... he says 24!!!!!! My head snapped as I looked at him I said "24!!! Damn!!" We start fishing a few spot then he says "you mention you own a boat can you take the trolling motor while I'm goimg to tie on a few jigs, and do you have a white spinner bait" I said sure I would love to run the trolling motor" and I already had a white spinner bait tied on.he motors up to this steep rock wall, I take control of the trolling motor and within 10 casts I had 3 fishing the boat for about 10lbs. (This was a team weigh so whatever we caught was both of our weights) one of the other pro's come iding by and ask Gary "how you guys doing" Gart replies "my co-angler is killing it we got 3 fish in the live well and there all his"... I can't tell you how much this boosted my confidence to have a pro not to mention one that's won 20+ boats give me a compliment like that... we fished the rest of the day Gary caught 2 that day that were over 6 lbs and another on that was about 4.5lbs. We ended up using 2 of my fish to complete our limit of about 21lbs. (We probably caught 25 fish that day) I ended up in first place as the amateur after day one. My second day pro didn't know Oroville hardly, I wanted so badly to tell him where Gary and I fished on the first day but there was no way I was going to break the unwritten rule of sharing info from my day 1 to the 2nd day pro.. we only caught 3 fish the second day, I ended up in 14th place and Gary won another boat... to this say I like to think I helped Gary win the boat but I knew deep down inside he put me on the fish, without him I would never have contributed to my first day 1st place.... sorry this was a long post, just one more thing. Gary and I were both fishing white spinner baits, Gary hooked up a big bass probably 8-9lbs and got broken off, he was pretty distrote... so I try to cheer him up by saying "don't worry we will get a big one today" Gary replys "I have won over $100,000 on that spinner bait" so I say " don't you have another one" he reply "when say I won over $100,000k with that bait I ment that exact bait, fir some reason It swam different then other spinner baits, it was really beat up paint chipped off from being thrown up agents the rocks on the bank. Thank you Gary, i had a great day one i will never forget.

Not to bust your bubble Randy, but I have my own list of Pro Anglers who are total A××holes . Worst days of fishing tournaments as co Angler Was during Pro AM tournaments. I have a dozen stories to tell but I'll only tell you one . Fishing a tournament in NC, Pro was in the top twenty during the third day, after Fishing for a hour the Pro had three fish throwing a spinner bait around docks...he was Fishing the same pattern the first two days...his spinner bait broke into pieces after it hit a piling...I told him I had 4 exactly the same as his 2@1/4 oz 2@ 3/8 oz, he took all 4 telling me he pay for them later . After he got his limit he decided to bed fish and asking me not to fish or move around the boat . I didn't catch a single fish all day. after we arrived at the weigth in he told me I owed him $50.00 for gas , he never paid for the baits either. To add insult even more, he finished in the top 10 making it into the Classic that year....Oh the SOB won the Classic too !

I met some great boaters when I was a co. I think I had 3 bad experiences. One was a boater in my first tournament that was fine with me until he found out I was in college for legal studies. He even turned the boat when I spotted a 4# on a bed so he could catch it. Another showed up to the launch late and we almost missed the tournament because he took so long. He then was purposely hitting wakes to try to jump over them to the point I ended up with a chunk out of my leg from it hitting the console. When I went to give him gas money he laughed and said no because he didn't put gas in and thats why we stayed so close. On the other hand I've had some amazing boaters that I'm still good friends with. I learned alot from them. When I bought my boat one helped me find a good one and stopped me from buying a lemon. I went on to be a boater and when all my stuff didn't pan out I listened to my Co's suggestion and both of us ended up with a check.

I have fished as both a co angler and boater in several tournaments such as the FLW Costa and BFLs, Bassmaster regionals etc. As a co angler I fished with a guy who's pretty popular in the industry and for whatever reason we just did not get along. He wouldnt get the net for me and I was boat flipping my fish. I'd hook them and he wouldnt even get off the trolling motor for me to reel them in. He would drag me through the brush with a fish in tow. I finally asked him what his problem was and his answer was that's just the way I am. Well that's not cool. I've never had any other issues but that was the last year I fished as a coangler. I get it as a boater the investment is way more, but I was driving 10 and 12 hours to fish these events so I was invested too. The guy just didnt like me for some reason from the get go. Or that's just how he was. 😂 I tried to apologize for my part but hea never responded so it is what it is. He is a great angler btw. Hopefully we will run into each other again and squash it. I finished in the top 25 in the southwest region that year and fished the FLW costa series championship at lake Cumberland. 21 hour drive from the house. We put in the time and work as well. However dont cast in front of me when you're on my boat. Dont fish water I havent got to yet. Theres some unwritten rules you shouldn't cross as co angler and maybe I did something to piss him off like ask what type of things we would be fishing when I called. You live and learn.

I’m the same way you are. I asked all the time what kind of fishing we were going to be doing and never had a problem….to say “it’s none of my business” is kinda shitty. Lol! Considering the boater practiced for a week I’d hope they’d be able to tell me if we were fishing deep or shallow or if you don’t know because your practice sucked ass then just say that. Lol. The co angler knowing what kind of fishing they’ll be doing is for the convenience of everybody cause that’s half of my tackle and rods I can eliminate. His take on a co angler is way off….I’m not paying hotel fees, gas to drive hours, license, etc etc to “learn”….I’m there to compete as a co because I don’t have the money to buy a new boat. You fish your water and I’ll fish mine I respect that but to tell a co it’s none of their business what they’ll be doing so they can’t have any of their stuff rigged is shitty! Idk I’ve been on both sides of this and that’s my take on it!

These guys made for great experiences in learning and great convo. Gary Klein Mark Davis Brett Hite Denny Brauer With that said I fished with some pros that made for some horrible days. Especially if you out fish them. I wont mention their names but most of them are not competing anymore.

Quick question for you man. I have heard that you pulled the plug on your boat to semi sink it to be able to get under a bridge in a flooded area at Buggs then bilged the water back out after getting through and won the tournament. First, is this true, and if so is there any video available of this? Thanks.

I was on a regional club tournament as the non boater.. It was boat against boat so we were supposed to be a team.. But the guy I got teamed with was completely the a-hole.. Pull up to a spot and I didn't care that he was fronting me, I've played that game.. it's whatever to me I'll find a place to fish. This guy was doing anything he could to keep me from fishing at all, including turning the boat to try to catch my line in the motor or "accidentally" wrapping it around himself and "having" to cut the line to get out of it so I'd lose the rig.. The last straw was when I nailed into what was probably a 6lb fish..I asked him to get the net, instead he jumped into the driver seat, started the boat and hard throttled towards the fish then spun away throwing me down and almost out and breaking my rod and the fish off.. I stopped fishing completely and texted a buddy of mine to come take me off the boat and back to the ramp.. when I knew he was close I pulled the keys out of the switch and chucked them under something on the floor (lucky for him they stayed IN the boat) so he couldn't try to roar away when my buddy showed up.. (320lb power lifter Army vet.. so I knew this dick wouldn't try to physically challenge him..) When I got back to the ramp and explained the situation that I felt threatened and in danger and I was leaving , they disqualified the "team" and I left.. so he got nothing for his efforts.. Except entry and ramp fees that I paid.. I heard second hand a couple years later that he actually got reported somehow and "blacklisted" from being able to fish tournaments... I don't know if that's even a thing.. Again, second or third hand, i can't verify. I quit doing tournaments a few years later and am much happier fishing with\against my friends for loser pays $20 bucks and dinner for the winner. Fish on!

I’ve fished many times as a coangler in some flw’s and nichols and a few others, but I asked my boater every time how we were going to be fishing…not to press him, but to get my gear set up properly…no since in running a square bill when the boater decides he wants to fish deep. My worst experiences have been with boaters that back boat you to much, I understand to a certain degree but I paid to be there too and while it’s nowhere near what the captain is going to bring in, the captain must understand that he was standing on the back of the boat one day. I tend to go with the flow, I’ll match your energy, and I always chip in on gas and ALWAYS grab the net!!…and it doesn’t hurt to know how to efficiently back a boat and trailer in, I’ve impressed a couple on those early morning 5 flight launches on a double ramp on a 45 degree angle..😂😂

The first pro tournament I ever fished I was 18 ! It was the last tournament of the year and I didn’t know how any of it worked !! I was on pigs it was on my home lake ! He was the points leader in that circuit and he HAD to fish his boat me being the baby on the tour I knew nothing. It was the end of July hot as heck and I was catching them in 6” of water on a Chartreuse painted blade buzz bait slow extra slow ! He put his trolling motor on high all he kept saying these fish aren’t in shallow water they just aren’t here ! He blew thru my bank I lucked up and caught one when he was re tying ! He kept screaming they ain’t here it’s to shallow. So he wanted to fish deep ! He cranked up and started fishing piers. The tournament director said you have to give your partner 1/2 the day in front ! At 10:30 I said I want the front he started the oh man don’t do me this way !! I said crank up and go back where we started ! No don’t do this ! The director said I get 1/2 a day ! He squealed and whined and said they ARE NOT SHALLOW ! I don’t care let’s go ! My first cast A 7.6 we could weigh in 10 fish ! He was such a a hole I front ended his butt ! Less than an hour I had my 10 and he was let me up there you have yours ! Bahaha. Nope if you would have listened we both would have weighed in 40 lbs ! Standing in the weigh-in line my bag was solid and he had 2 anchovies! I ended up wit 48 lbs and broke off a 7+ fish. All in 6” of water on a 100 degree day. I didn’t have to fish the 2nd day on the other lake. It was a two Lake tournament. I caught 17 lbs on Sunday ! Won it hands down by 21 lbs. All of the guys was giving him hell. That young boy put it on you. He was so embarrassed. That 45 years ago ! I started fishing a few tournaments when school would allow me. That man never said a word to me again. It’s so sad that he was well liked by everyone but him being the big pro and leading got his butt handed to him by a kid that had no experience. He thought he knew EVERYTHING. The reason those fish were shallow like that was it’s a shallow lake and the oxygen was low and the little waves on the bank raised the oxygen level. It’s like that every year. On that lake. Sorry for the lengthy message but it just shows you sometimes it pay to a least listen to what your partner says on their home lake 😂 ! I never had an issue with any other partner again. I know I tried to learn from whoever I’ve fished with.

Man if I ever got to fish with a pro I wouldn't care if I caught anything or not, just the whole experience of it would be fun for me. It's not always about being the guy in the front. I've caught a ton of fish in the back throwing right behind someone in the same spot. Sometimes I think that when the guy in front throws in there it gets that fishes attention whether it hits their bait or not, doesn't mean it won't hit yours.

My biggest a**hole boater was at a Regionals tourney for BASS at the Chesapeake....I was in 4th going into day 2, boater was a local stick so I was pretty pumped. The entire day he was annoying as sh*t, asking me to tell him riddles, and must have said he doesn't use nets about 10 times. He hooked into a 5+ and started screaming NET! at the top of his lungs. We weren't having a great day, so the last hour he said he was done and I could just fish off the back if I want. :-) Luckily my day 1 weight carried me into the cutoff. Oh yeah, and at the end of the day he was being wicked confrontational and blaming me for a hole in his seat (it 10000% was not from me) :-) :-)

However I used it as learning opportunities. Did I get frustrated sometimes; yeah damn right! Did I take it out on him? Absolutely not. I mimiced him and asked questions. Finally I out fished him for the first time and so I thanked him for all the knowledge he gave me. I didn't want to out fish him for competition sake, I wanted to out fish him to know I was absorption the information correctly.

Being a co-angler kind of sucks being realistic, and I do mean realistic, because if you’re fishing the shoreline up close and moving rather slow and beating the hell out of the water with a rather fast bait, you’re not leaving much for the angler. But that’s life at the back of the boat

Disagree with comments about co-angler asking the plan. Yes they are there to learn, however most bring what 5 to 6 rods so they need to know what your plan. don’t want to have a bunch of DT10 on if you’re fishing shallow and they should be having spinnerbait or 1.5 or maybe an extra Flippin stick they dont have 20 rods

Well we brought along a friend of a friend and he was complaining "we didn't know what we were doing" etc. Well immediately after he said that, my friend got a hit on something large, then a 6 foot tarpon leaps out of the water hooked.
