I'm an expert at using these caps, I've been doing it for most of my life. Now when you do a cap bleach, you need to think about your final result you want to get. I prefer chunky highlights not the thin highlights that mostly blends into your hair. If you want all over lightened hair then pull a little through all holes in the cap. That gives you a more blended unnoticeable lighter hair that doesn't have streaks. If you like that beachy chunky highlights you use less of the holes and pull more hair out of each hole your going to use. Like skip the holes that don't have painted rings and pull more hair through. Keep in mind that if your holes your using in the cap are too close to each other your going to have a lot more blonde in that area because you just pulled hair through two holes to close to each other.. Once you've pulled your desired clumps of hair through each hole you want to use. You take a fine tooth comb and run it through the hair you pulled out. This will pull those loops of hair that came out but didn't fully come out of the hole. That is why girl #1 in Brad's video had the light spots/dots at her part. A loop got highlighted that she didn't pull out with the rest or that her bleach is too runny. After you use the fine tooth comb, get your brush and do the same again so that you make sure you pull out all the hair through the holes. Once you've done that. You've got hair under the cap that your not going to bleach in the back. Put that in a pony tail and tie a bag over that section if you fear that you might miss your hair in the back and get the hair you didn't want to bleach. Mix your bleach make sure it's thick and pasty so that it doesn't run. Your going to put a plastic bag over your head so it's not going to dry out, so make it thick. Keep in mind that light hair looks lighter then it really is under the bleach so wipe a little off when you check it. If it looks light and not orangey or yellow then it's ready. Rinse it in the shower with cap in place. You can even wash it before you take the cap off but what I do is add conditioner to make your hair soft after I've rinsed it so that the cap doesn't pull on your freshly highlighted hair which has become delicate. You get less breakage if you do that. Pull cap off then wash and condition hair. If it's not highlighted enough then in a month or 2 do it again. I'm a natural blonde but since I've gotten white hair now that I'm older. I have to dye my roots when they grow in white. The ends are very blonde, kind of ombre. I often highlight my hair with streaks from a cap or I just highlight it in layers or darken it with layers and foils. If you've highlighted it and pulled too much through that you've got to much blonde, you can do a reverse cap dye not bleach job on it. Pick a brown thats close to your color, pull hair through and dye your hair. Understand the more you bleach the more porous your hair is going to be and won't hold the color, just be patient when deciding to do stuff to your hair, and think about all the what ifs. Understand that if you did damage your hair a little through one of these caps, that you didn't bleach all your hair and could of ruined all your hair. As Brad says, "Live Your Extra Life".

I'm 61 and love your videos! I'm old enough to have attempted to get highlights using a RUBBER highlighting cap (like the old school swim caps). Simply having my hair pulled through the holes of that cap was excruciatingly painful to the point of tears. I had to tell them to stop a little less than halfway through. When we removed the cap, most of the hair that was pulled through was still in the cap! My scalp was painful to the touch for a week! 😳😳

@@miyukuchan22 well for 1 we never used the tie on caps. They don't work well they don't get tight enough on the head. The rubber caps that reseal we also did not put a plastic bag under. We dusted the inside with baby powder as well to make it slide on easier. We also when using the hook watched how we were pulling the hair because you want to get the hair from that area not from an inch further back. We didn't worry about pulling it all the way out till we did the head. We used a comb to get the hair all the way out. Around the ears we would use our hand under the cap to protect them. Just some hints.

And he was all "what good examples? I've never seen good examples" like 10 seconds after he admitted that when he did it on Miss Mannequinn it looked good! I think most examples I've seen (that weren't totally ruined for reasons not related to the cap, like the second video) look really nice. Particularly when you make the highlights only a few levels lighter than the rest, it can look super natural and pretty and sun-kissed. I work at a salon, and the new stylists/apprentices usually do my hair (for free), so I know first hand - the things an experienced stylist sees, I do not. I just got my hair done, and one of our teachers examined my hair from like three inches away, explaining to my stylist "see how this side doesn't match? And see that empty gap?" Of course, I'm starting to panic, thinking I'm finally going to regret being a guinea pig, until I see a mirror - all I see is that I'm blonde now, and darn, I look pretty cute! 😂I can see what the stylist meant if I really stare, but honestly, I wouldn't have noticed. That said, I'm not picky - that's why I'm the (now blonde!) guinea pig. 😊

My best friend did them for me (I’m 28 now) and they came out really really good. and funny enough she (the best friend that did my hair) is actually is one of the best stylists in my area now! She’s a blonde/balayage specialist. & She’s amazing. So maybe that’s why it came out so good, lol. We were only like 16 at the time!

My mom is allergic to bleach so of course a couple of years ago she insisted on having bleach blonde hair. I used one of those caps but tried to pull every single hair out of the holes. We did it two times in three days, it took forever BUT it worked and she didn't have any allergic reactions because the bleach did not touch her skin or scalp!

I've done it before. It's actually how I first did my hair years ago. The trick is to get someone to help you as they can see what's going on and to make sure the hair rests on cling film between the cap and your hair to ensure the colour isn't sitting on the cap to reduce bleeding risks. It *can* look good and it's a good option for those looking for a subtle change.

Dear dark hair people! You need 3 processes to lighten to blonde. You can't do it in 1 or even 2 applications of a OTC bleach product. I'm Native American with very dark hair, but I think black will act the same as mine. ) After the 3rd lightening, you will most likely have to tone it. Be careful not to strip it too much. Just prepare yourself to do that when you start. It is a project.

Silver and grey is one of the hardest colors to dye - you have to get your hair to platinum first, and that's really hard for most people to do at home. I'd be concerned that anyone who carries a grey color for home use will open themselves up to really bad reviews, just because it's such a difficult process.

I'm a hairdresser, but basically retired. I went to cosmetology school in the early 80's so cap highlights were the only way I learned then and did them for years! Just like any other aspect of doing hair there are a lot of things you learn over time, and l apparently got pretty good at them because I had a lot of return clients for highlights! When you do videos that involve cap highlights l always wind up laughing because I'm thinking No Brad, that's not true! instead of agreeing with you the way l usually do!!

I've had all kinds of colors and my worst dye experience involved cap highlighting! Way back in high school I tried it once. My mom did them and I ended up with 2 blonde strands on either side and a whole wall of blonde in the back 😂 We ended up getting box dye from Walmart at 2am lol; dyed over it with a light brown and it turned out sort of a dark caramel. Thankfully it was decent-ish in the end, but I've never used a cap since!
