Hi Brad. After I watch your videos I daydream about one day having a greenhouse and enjoying my early morning coffee looking at all my plants. Turns out your plants have the benefit of enjoying their coffee in your greenhouse, too!

Could you explain why the watering has to be under 100 parts per million, but they can take 400 in coffee fertilizer. Isnt magnesium in harder water? I am not doubting what you are saying, just trying to wrap my head around the chemistry of these beautiful plants. You obviously know your chemistry and plant culture! Great video. You do a great job showing your processes and explaining your methods!

I just spray the leaves lightly with 1/4 strength orchid food from Spring through summer. This induces pitchering. Works great. I also hear dropping one osmocoat pellet in new pitchers increases their size quite a bit. I'm going to try that istarting in the spring.

Ps: I use coffee diluted with only 20% of water and (luckily) had no issue with my babies (older and young plants). Tried this method once/2montha and do not flush it, after few months, I switched to once/month , I pour it on the main "vine" and it just runs down to the soil. Plants are vigorous and way healthier then others so far.

The best way is to put the pot under a faucet and let the water drain through the pot for awhile .You want a nice stream of water coming through the pot not just a few drops at a time.

after rewatching, and assuming he's done this fairly recently before, I would think it actually improved it! It actually looks more vibrant (if I haven't psyched myself out). Besides, when you really think about it: More acidic + complex plant specific amino acids (the impetus behind the whole get-that-Nitrogen thing in the first place) + caffeine (a metabolic cofactor-increase) + trace phosphorus, potassium salts, and micronutes = not a bad scenario for any acidophilic plant. Time to run some tests! :D
@espcustom
@espcustom 7 жыл бұрын
Alex Parris he seems to flush pots after 24h though. sphagnum often hates fertilizer and high tds. 800ppm is crazy high in minerals for cps/sphag. i guess it doesn't stay long enough to cause damage ! it seems to leave lots of good stuff for the plants though

Hello. I have a question. I have a 5 year old pitcher plant. It is large with 3 different shoots that each looks like a separate plant (they all share the same root system). About a month ago my roommate added to the soil regular fertilizer and since then the plant has started to dry out (the pitchers and the leaves), and it seems like the plant is slowly dying. What can I do to prevent this?? Thank you

Tony D. After deluting the coffee how many parts per million is it to be safe? The parts per million depends on how strong the coffee is . What if it is Expresso that would be higher ppm. What is safe ppm to use as coffee fertilizer.

Is your water destilled? Because if you dilute the coffee with normal tap water it would have even more TDS ^^ For the amino acids, they contain nitrogen which can be broken down by the plants (or enzymes in the soil) and then used as nutrients. I will try it myself.

***** I absolutely love your garden lol, I can't get enough. You have some really great plants in there. I have been gardening for a few years now but am just now getting into carnivorous plants. I understand they don't eat through their roots and so on so that's a big change for me, no soil and such etc. I just recently started trying to feed the seedlings through foliar feeding and I'm having success. When I planted them before and let them sit and just gave them RO water they lasted a few weeks and would slowly disappear and die. What I've done now is filled a spray bottle up with RO water and put a few drops, if that, of nutrient salts in it...Dyna-gro's Grow and Protekt and they are eating it up. I spray them once every couple days or so or as I see the sphagnum starting to dry, which is what I was doing with just RO water. The results are very positive and they are actually growing in size whereas before they were not. I'm hoping to get my first pitcher very soon...haven't had one of those form yet. :) This is like learning how to garden all over again!

I'm trying to grow some pitcher plants can you help? My first run was decent but they ended up dying. I had nothing but sphagnum I was keeping wet and dropped the seeds in and they grew very well over about 2-3 weeks. I forgot to water them and they dried out and are pretty much dead. I'm trying to figure out the right kind of medium. Here is what I'm thinking for the next run. I have a small plant terrarium that is maybe 7" wide and maybe 5" deep and has a dome shaped lid. I was thinking of putting down coco-coir about 2" deep and then putting finely chopped sphagnum down and then planting the seeds. Will this hold enough water, should I use the lid or no? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ready to cringe? I fertize my nepenthes with coffee every 6 months for a quick shot of nitrogen. ..I always find that new leaves and pitcher are bigger afterwards. ..second. ..I fertilize in the winter with worm compost tea once a month because the greenhouse is bug deficient. They love it!
