Disagree hard on Gangnam Style being bad except the hook but then again, I live in Korea where Psy’s legacy is kind of engraved into the general consciousness. Most people in Korea generally don’t listen to Psy for high quality compositionally well crafted art. They listen to hear a dad bod rapper make fun and sometimes silly songs. My fiancé calls him the “B-movie director of k-pop” and it suits him well. His whole schtick is kind of a parody in a way. There’s a lot of music like that in Korea and ironic enjoyment is very very common. TL;DR: Gangnam style bad but also that’s kind of the point and that’s why it’s good. Idk why I spent so long on a comment about Gangnam style but I guess the hook has infected me edit: I just found out as well that psy was one of the artists at the forefront of anti-Iraq war protests in Korea and was actually quite controversial for a while despite his silly comedic parody-like music being so popular. I’ve fallen into the Psy rabbit-hole and can’t get out. Please send help.

@@SavageGreywolf eh, i kind of disagree. weird al is parody and psy is parody but they're different types of parody. psy's parody is legit as if you were watching a b-movie, even down to his music video and overall persona. weird al feels more like absurdist geek parody. they're both a willow tree but different types of willow tree. if anything, weird al is kind of in a league of his own because of how absurdist his approach is.

@@cleabus haha I should say a lot of this is second hand from my fiancé (who is Korean and grew up listening to Psy pre-Gangnam style) but based on how beloved psy is and the kind of humour I see in media here I totally believe it. He’s actually a talented and knowledgeable guy and people respect him a lot, just for more campy fun reasons. Btw his most recent album has some really fun tracks on it if you’re curious.

I remember playing in a band briefly because a small music school I went to was trying to start one at the time and knowing I was moderately experienced on guitar they asked me join. I went in day one to find the setlist made up of a lot of generic pop songs like Ex's & Oh's by Elle King which already shouldve been a red flag. One of the songs on the list though was Bored to Death by Blink 182 and when I listened to it the first time ngl I didnt vibe with it too much. That wasnt too much of a big deal though because I figured if I learned it Id appreciate it more like I do with most songs anyways but soon realized the more I learned it the more I just dreaded having to play it live. That lead guitar part during the chorus is one of the most fundamentally boring things Ive ever had to play and no matter what I did to it it always ended up sounding like something out of some generic christian contemporary rock type song and honestly I straight up left the band a month or two after joining mostly so Id just never have to play that song again.

Sweater weather I actually like for the most part outside of the chorus, just has a chill vibe to it that I can't really explain. Also, I feel like tubthumping is kind of a weird one because the song is INTENTIONALLY boring and bad because they basically were a punk band that was signed by a label who didn't do research on them, so they made the most shitty yet catchy song they could come up with. That way they could make the label looks stupid and make a joke out of the whole pop scene in the UK at the time.
