This op. 117 by Katchen is absolutely marvellous. Best version ever.

I cant imagine these quiet introspective late works receiving a more sensitive and understanding interpretation.

This recording was my introduction to the Op. 117. Already a Brahms lover, this recording fixed Brahms in my heart forever.

Bruno Walter recounts in his memoirs that Mahler, whose young assistant he was, told him that he had one time visited old Brahms in Wien and that he had found him glued to his stove, shivering with cold, sick, and alone, so alone. When I hear these pieces by Katchen, that's what I think of. Which other pianist, in these pieces, makes us want to console our old Brahms, to sit next to him, to tell him of our love? For the last Brahms, there is only one pianist, and I fear there will never be another. In any case, none of these show-business stars with oversized egos, who should simply be banned from playing these pieces.

There's only one interpretation on par with Katchen's: Arcadi Volodos'.

The harmonic rhythm is so hard to present; a surprise every moment. Accenting every surprise impedes the flow. He controls that. The climax could be a little stronger.

This is played with wonderful beauty. However, in my opinion none the less not the greatest recording of op 117. Radu Lupu play it with even more beauty. And when I compare especially no 1 of both Lupu and Katchen with that of Backhaus, I cannot help but feel that the great German pianist makes more of the music than Lupu ad Katchen.
