When I was recovering from a near fatal injury I listened to Brahms Requîmes and felt the words and music healing me. I will forever believe Brahms healed my mind and body with his immortal “Ein Deutsches Requium”.

"Menlo Park, California." When Brahms walked? New Jersey is more likely. Anyway, thanks for a fine introduction to the Brahm's Requiem, one of my all time favorites.

I think the composer behind Beethoven's left shoulder is actually Wagner, not Bach.

I am rather certain that the ceiling of Zurich Tonhalle actually contains Brahms, Beethoven and Wagner... at 7:25

Bülow's characterization of Brahms' first symphony as Beethoven's tenth is ambivalent. From today's perspective, this remark can also be understood as a devaluation. Brahms' contribution to the further development of the symphonic form does not go beyond Beethoven and falls short of his contemporary Bruckner.

Interesting video. but I beg to differ on the question of nationalism. One would like to see Brahms in the "good camp" and Wagner in the "bad camp", but Brahms was just as nationalist as Wagner (maybe even more). The creation of the requiem also falls in the German unification struggle, I am quite sure that it is one of the main reason he undertook the completion of the piece he abandoned earlier. Plus he also did few years later a "sequel" piece the "triumflied" that one could call "a German Te Deum", that was directly composed to celebrate Prussian victory over France. Both pieces are gorgeous, but there is no need to sugarcoat them. It is not an accident he did not call it a human requiem, the piece has the same ideological program as the Meistersingers by Wagner (the manuscript of which Brahms possessed himself), that is to praise German culture and heritage, to work to create a cultural union not just a political union. A noble enterprise, but that is labeled as nationalism by todays PC standards.

5:19: Alaxander Graham Bell did NOT invent the telephone! Antonio Meucci and Philipp Reis independently invented the telephone.

I wish Brahms had titled it a human requiem. imagine how many more people would feel welcomed by it.
