I've always loved how the Brahms first symphony opens with loud, urgent drumbeats of war; captured beautifully here

I love this.I believe Brahms would have loved this too. Jocum goes for broke emotionally and yet brings out the Classical conservative aspects of this great symphony.

Jochum's revelation. I want nobody else now (for Brahms)

There is something wrong with the recording at 6:30. It seems to revert back and repeating itself.

Jochum felt that of the 4 symphonies by Brahms, the 1st fitted best with his style of conducting.

it is actually a combination of all the material brahms used and developed in the whole piece.

I am not sure but the drasticism here played by London Symphony is not at all like the interpretation he would have otherwise made in any other orchestra. The sound is too sharp and crisp and doesn't sound like his interpretation of Brahms.

I disagree: I think Jochum's Romantic approach with a Classical sounding orchestra is the ideal Brahms sound. Brahms used all the Classical structures with a Romantic harmonic vocabulary; performances of his music should not sound as if they were by Wagner. Also, listen to Jascha Horenstein's epic recording with the London Symphony, another ideal soundscape; I'm not a fan of Furtwangler's Brahms.
