Watch this work performed by the Asian Youth Orchestra under the baton of James Judd: • Mahler - Symphony No. ...
Whenever Claudio Abbado conducts the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, music lovers are in for a very special event. Such was the case in the summer of 2009 when the charismatic Italian conductor opened Lucerne's tradition-rich Festival with a concert featuring Mahler's First Symphony and Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In 2003 Abbado, together with Artistic and Executive Director Michael Haefliger, founded the orchestra, which consists of internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians - just as did its model, the elite body of musicians that Arturo Toscanini gathered around hirn at the Festival's founding in 1938. lt was with this first-class ensemble that Abbado offered a vividly inspired interpretation of the Mahler. In truth - as the audience's response demonstrated - it left nothing to be desired. The twenty-two-year-old Chinese Pianist Yuja Wang likewise earned enthusiastic applause for her account of the Prokofiev Concerto, which she played with character and nuanced expression.
The theme of nature served es the guiding thread for all the programming choices during the summer of 2009 - a theme with obvious relevance for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, which is held amid one of the most beautitul landscapes of Europe: its concerts incIude unforgettable views of Lake Lucerne and Alpine panoramas. This theme, es it happens, has eminent musical significance es well: 'Like a sound of nature' is the direction Mahler inscribed at the very beginning of the First Symphony.

The youth orchestra of Suncheon, a small city in Korea, is supposed to perform this beautiful music this coming June. Happily, my two sons are in the orchestra. This music might be beyond them. Still, it's just adorable to see them practice over and over again, and listen to it even while they're sleeping every single day. The conductor of the youth orchestra is Mr.Seo Kyeong-wook, a genuine artist. All the members really respect him and so do their parents. We are so grateful to him. I wish the city officials would think this way.

There are few things that sound as good as a great orchestra playing Mahler round midnight - and this one, well I'm not an expert but you don't have to be one to see that they've NAILED IT !! Of course they're all elite musicians, but the "Maestro" has them all on a string!! Claudio Abbado became a very charismatic conductor in the later stages of his career. And he knows his Mahler. The most beautiful thing in Mahler's music and in particular in his first symphony is this kind of mistic tension that hides in apparent simplictiy, both melodically and armonically speaking, that leads, usually in an unexpected way, to the main themes (the real proof of his genius) of the symphony itself. Mahler's first is made up of gems floating in a deep, misterious ocean. And of course that's the reason for wich listening to Mahler requires so much concentration and passion. Mahler's music is expression of life in all its reality and in all its cruelty and in that sense this symphony is a real manifesto of the revolution carried out by Mahler and Mahler alone. A big bravo to Claudio Abbado wich, as usual, is able to capture the composer's intentions with absolute sensibility. Thank you for everything Maestro.

What's so cool with this is that it's beginning is so similar to that of Beethoven's 9th, the symphony that really began the romantic era. It's almost like Mahler in his first symphony is aiming to say "This was the man who started it all, I'm going to finish it". And he did.
@rodrigolandaromero
@rodrigolandaromero Жыл бұрын
Yes, I noticed that too… He liked to copy ideas😅, the fifth movement (considering that the third movement has cut by Mahler’s publisher) has several themes that sound too familiar. For example, the last phrase at 56:06 is similar to Schubert’s famous Allegretto in C minor for piano (middle section). But even Chopin’s Butterfly Etude is an almost literal copy of the third movement of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 25, so I guess they all did it. That’s shocking for all those Chopin lovers out there haha

@@cristoforomaragni890 That’s like the cheapest phrase ever: but in any case, Mahler “borrowed” the ideas (if he had in fact “stolen” them, would we be able to notice?) Wow it’s funny how people can just hear sayings and repeat them like parrots without even knowing their meaning😂 Hilarious and sad at the same time🤔

Bloody superb. Abbado's tempos are virtually spot on ... far too many conductors rush Mahler. Listen to the love for Abbado in that audience!

Mahler schaffte es, mit seiner Musik die Schönheit der Natur auszudrücken. Immer, wenn ich Trost suche, dann höre ich genau diese Sinfonie.

Without wishing to sound trivial especially as a person who has been devoted to Mahler for 40 years and who hopes to leave this world to the Chorus Mysticus from the 8th Symphony, the opening bars of this Symphony always seem to take me out of this world and I almost say "Space, the final frontier....". Mahler's music for me encompasses the whole world and changes me every time I listen to it. This is an excellent performance. I am not always of fan of Abbado as a conductor of Mahler (Solti is among my favourites)but here he really is outstanding. I noticed Simon Rattle in the audience which says something (he's another great conductor of Mahler).

The opening movement of ONE I must have listened to more than 100 times. I still get different readings from it, every time I hear it. That's how rich is Mahler's music - he had so much to say about humans in nature. I need to get back to listening.
