This is probably the best performance of Brahm's 4th ever recorded. The tempo is superlative and the audio capture flawless. Props to the conductor and every member of the orchestra for such excellence!

One of the best interpretation of Brahms 4!!! So romantically solemn, so sublime, so sorrowful, a genuine art of Brahms!

In this incredible masterpiece by Brahms, you need a conductor who not only understands the technical complexity of the structure and tempo but has absorbed fully to his inner senses the glory and passion of it all. One need look no further than Mr. Chung's facial expressions to grasp his absorption of the entirety. He has of course memorized every note, but to me this interpretation of the second movement evokes pure serenity.

22:08, first violin. This beautiful melody could only be made possible by two clever choices: 1) a heavy vibrato and 2) playing the whole phrase on the G-string (the lowest one). The resulting sound is coarse and weary, yet so warm and charming. It contrasts with the E minor roar they had been playing right before. Horn fades out, but their energy is transferred flawlessly to the lower string sections. Absolutely the best rendition of the phrase, thank you so much.

35:39 - Sublime. Notice how Maestro Chung is just listening the the flautist (whose name I wish I knew, because it more than deserves mention) and following her lead with perfect cues for the accompanying strings and horn. Just a marvel of musicality at every level; from the page up to its realisation

Well, yes and no. As a horn player myself, I was a bit let down at that moment, yes. HOWEVER, unlike many other conductors, this one is actually interesting to watch. So I think I agree with the videography. (After all, we do get to see the horn section several times in the course of the movement, just not at that moment at the very beginning of the movement -- which is one of the most magical in the history of western music.)
