This recording is exceptionally good. Mäkelä is such a bright conductor, really at the service of the music,, the Oslo Philharmonic has really a nice sound, passionate but precise for all the instruments. The sound is so well layered, but at the same time the parts are so clear, and that is also thanks to the acoustics of this place and the careful and intelligent microphone recording.

The conductor and orchestra sound fantastic - and certainly are - but my hats off to the sound engineers. I think we all tend to forget them, but they really can "make or break". Here the sound recording is fantastic. (The conductor and orchestra are brilliant, but could so easily have been "broken" by a second rate recording team.) So often the sound crew is ignored, but here they clearly deserve being singled out ... Bravo!

Makela is the conductor every musician wants: one that doesn't dictate every beat and entrance and allows the musicians to MAKE the music. His and the orchestra's phrasing are spectacular and there is no question to what line the listener should be paying the most attention. For the haters that say he's too inexperienced and too young, get out of his way because he will be one of the greatest conductors of our time (and already is.)

His conducting is strangely impressive. Like his choice of costume...and the knowing smiles, eyes. His body swaying in the wind like a reed, more smiles, eyes...an Actor, an Interpreter of Suave Force and a Public to his own Orchestra. All the while...dressed like a Waiter. That's what i see and hear. A Paradox. His treatment of this Majestic Work is ample proof of his command of the Atmosphere on the staff. He may be, only 25 but his uncanny habit of downplaying his baton's movements and his own body's... to the point of near-immobilism is good enough for me and my full attention. This young man is next on the Stellar Front of Conductors. He breathes command even when he doesn't do anything but move as little as possible. In other words...he is integral part of the Orchestra and the Work. Not on a Demonstration trip like so many others who...want to give a clear Impression of Command. This guy is as much on the receiving end, as he is on the conducting. Very original and very sensitive. Often...he stands there LISTENING. Astonishing. Wanted to be a Conductor at 12. Mäkelä is a paradoxical Conductor for sure. Well done. You've won me over. What's next ?

Mr. Makela it's indeed a brilliant reality he's no longer a young generation musician with great future. As a Director he show us a deeply maturity in his management specially in the exquisite dialogue in between the strings and the oboes at the end of the first movement. This is music at it's essence, the orchestra have such a great communication with him, seems like reading his commands in advance. Fantastic ensemble and gorgeous results.

Oh! How stunning Brahms it is. I happened to listen to on youtube. There are so many various theme, rhythm and articulation, also dynamism too. they say Brahms music is so difficult to appreciate his composition, especially how to combine every theme with a built -in changing suitable tempo which is concerned with his musical spirit and colorful thought. I would feel we might not to play through out in the same speed, because he had so many musical idea and graceful heart. Occasionally I used to listen to Yang Karajan No.4 with BPO. depend on my inclination. Anyway I would appreciate Oslo Philharmonic's calm, sound and sensibility so much.(soon be 91yrs.Japanese) sorry strange English.

After years of listening to this symphony, perhaps the greatest of the second half of the nineteenth century , I had never admired such a perfect interpretation! This very young and distinguished conductor possesses enormous talent. An exemplary style and mimic participation. The first movement of this masterpiece by "my Brahms" was performed with rigorous respect for its beauty and richness of abstraction , which where optimized down ti the most arduous nuances and need for pauses by Makela. The light and the vastness of nature, the colors in the light of a late summer sunny early afternoon, and the intimate closeness to nature and everything that lives, yes, living and being alive, all this and much more that Brahms expresses in his music is brought to full expression by the fantastic musicians of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under the inspiration of an absolutely unique conductor like Klaus Mäkelä. This wonderful performance reiterates the point of how each conductor’s interpretation of a work reveals nuances not heard in that of others. After listening to a half dozen other conductors treat this piece, for the first time I can actually hear the part of the strings under the oboes towards the end of the first movement at 25:30. What a revelation!! Therein lies the beauty and glory of classical music. It would require many lifetimes to fully appreciate it all, and even that would not be long enough. Brahms said, “It is the most personal utterance of my soul.” During a chaotic and uncertain period in the composer's life (1884 - 1885) Composed by critics, the symphony described Brahms' internal struggle and conflict. Klaus Mäkelä uses music as a vector of communication to give it meaning, even significance, as it is the case in this superb interpretation of Brahms' Symphony No.4. Touch by touch like a painter, he appropriates the score and creates, according to his temperament, his mood, a unique musical atmosphere. It is with his own network of sensory correspondences that he perceives an aggregate of syntheses, tensions and mental and emotional dynamics. It is my second favorite interpretation after Carlo Maria Giulini live concert with the Los Angeles. Thanks to the Oslo Phil Orch for this video !
