Thanks Andrew for a very clear description of the process. I've just bought some Selma fids to have a go and I was able to follow your video, fid in hand, pausing as necessary, and have almost completed my first braid on braid splice. I quite finished milking the cover back over the splice as I'm a bit short of a strong point to tie the loop over in my sitting room and also, I am using an old piece of rope so it's a bit stiff.

Very good , can I splice 11 mm and 13 mm static rope in the same manner ? I am 100 per cent a novis but keen as mustard to have a go .great video thanks I of to order some fids .

The splice should be pulled taught to tension the core by loading the loop before the excess core is cut. Otherwise you can end up with the cut end of core being drawn back around the eye as the splice beds in. This leaves a hollow point in the eye cover at the extraction point. In my experience the various fids are all very similar, the small differences in sizes of some makes may suit certain makes of rope better than others but I couldn't tell you which.
