you don't have to lighten it, just have a color added over the top like a red or a brown. then when the light hits it, it will have more depth in color

I have black hair and braid it almost every day for work. Quite a few people (usually women) have complimented it. I have a lot of red and brown undertones, though. You could try using henna. I've heard it gives black hair a glossy sheen, and some dark maroon highlights. Or, you could try adding texture to your hair, either by curling it or using a topstyler tool. See this video - the hair stylist for the Hunger Games movie explains how giving texture to dark hair lets braids stand out more. Even the stylist for this video (above) decided to crimp the model's hair. Personally, I don't care for crimping, but adding curl looks nice, I think. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaG5n4WQf6h6nqs
