We've all seen someone in a movie or TV show lift something supposedly heavy, but we knew it was actually very light. The same kind of visual clues that let us know when someone really hasn't taken a drink out of an opaque cup, even though they've pantomimed like they have. They don't move as we would expect, even if we can't quite put it into words as to why we know.

I was hoping for an explanation. I Don't know metric weight, so I just guessed heaviest to lightest and I was way of with the 6kg one. I thought it was the heaviest.

I was working a printing job and one of my coworkers would use this as a gag: Tape closed an empty box, struggle to lift it, then toss it to someone saying "catch"

I've always thought it was amazing how our brains will perform complicated linear algebra within microseconds despite the person being unable to solve basic algebra using their logical brain.

yeah just like when we throw things like bro how do you know what angle and how much force we need when i don't even know the distance
@maskettaman1488

Because we're not performing linear algebra. Not even close. We're recognizing patterns in his movement. Same with throwing a ball. We're not calculating trajectories, we're just making an estimate based on patterns from previous throws.

i believed in the words Deane told - up until i worked for swiss post in a "sorting center" for parcels. bc after two weeks, it didn't matter to me if a parcel weighted 2kg or 20kg (or with the unfortunate stints with "bulky goods-team" even up to 50kg (maximum for the manual sorting))... ;-)

The particular units don't matter. That was the purpose of his initial lift with a known quantity -- to imbue us with a quality (of lifting motion) which we then relate to other lifts.
