Our brains are computers. What if we could enhance their processing power? Medical technology now allows for brain signals to be read and translated to reverse paralysis. Deep brain stimulation is also used to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s. Neural interfaces are already improving lives. How do they work? What’s next for our physical connection to digital technology? And what are the implications of having new hardware in our heads?
This lecture was recorded by Victoria Baines on 24 October 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London
Victoria is IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology.
She is a leading authority in the field of online trust, safety and cybersecurity. She frequently contributes to major broadcast media outlets on digital ethics, cybercrime and the misuse of emerging technologies, including Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence. Every discussion of this subject should open with the physics corollary of IO being OI: what can be read-From can be written-To and then re-Written again. By whom for what? You ready for Madison Avenue ‘xecs tickling your hind-brain? McDonalds recently announced a campaign to project commercials into our dreams: if it’s being commercialized, then the milspec version is two decades old already.

Aren't remotely like classical or quantum computers and putting something inside someone's head to connect to either type of computer is a bad idea. Using AI (ex: cell phones) to assist in human evolution is already happening.

"tech makes us more intelligent" : that's contraindicative with current political and business needs and tendencies. also arguable if the core, the human brain is IQ 90 improving memory doesnt make it Einstein. like upgrading a 800MHz CPU with SSD and 3k RAM doesnt make it a supercomputer

I desperately wish lectures would speak to their audience and skip the intro/sales pitch and get to it. All I want to know is where we are now compared to where we were last year, not back to the start, and not the flash in the pan "making people walk" stuff. I'm looking forward to AI generated content that catches us up on the advances without all the flourishes ostensibly needed for an effective lecture. "GET ON WITH IT!"
